Getting the Japanese VoiceOver read the characters when typing on Mac

Hello guys,
This is my first post in this site, and I am not very familiar with it, so I am sorry if I posted in the wrong forum.
I have a Macbook pro 2017 and I want to get it to read Japanese characters for me when typing on the keyboard. I tried adding Japanese to the keyboard language and the VoiceOver just keeps saying unpronounceable. Do any of you know how to fix that?
