Frustrating Problem with Voiceover when Changing Sound Output Device

Hi, I would be very interested to know if anyone else has had the following problem and if so, whether a solution has been found. When I change my output audio device to a bluetooth speaker or AirPods and then change back to my laptop's internal speaker, 9 times out of 10, voiceover stops working altogether. Usually there is no audio feedback at all, but sometimes I get the VO audio sounds and no speech. Usually, I have no option but to do a hard reset as I can't even shut down the computer. I've tried using Siri to turn voiceover on and off as the command f 5 option doesn't seem to work. Siri will say voiceover is on but there no speech. If anyone else has experienced this, is there a work around to get voiceover working without having to reset the computer? Using a MacBook Air 2014 and High Sierra. Don't know why this happens and it does seem to be pretty random. I am using the system preferences sound output tab and this usually happens if I disconnect my bluetooth device or sometimes even when trying to change the device back to the laptop speakers from the system preferences tab. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
