Checking time and other shortcuts

macOS and Mac Apps

Long time listener, first time poster.

I'm relatively new to owning a Mac. I've had everything else Apple for years, but got a Macbook back in March.

I've looked through a bunch of the introductory articles and tables of commands etc but was just sitting here on my Mac wanting to check the time. I'm used to my Windows PC with the jaws key f12 or whatever for NVDA, that's its own new adventure. But I was wondering if there's a command or shortcut for just hearing the time as opposed to going to the menu and going over to the time.

Also if there is a shortcut for that, what other shortcuts or commands would it be fun for me to use that aren't like the typical commands in these beginner tables and articles etc.

Thanks!

While there is no specific VoiceOver command to announce the time, by default, VoiceOver's keyboard commander includes a command that will run a script which will speak the date and time using the system voice.
To enable keyboard commander, press VO Shift K. Once enabled, I believe the command to run the script is Right Option T. Commands and settings can be changed in VoiceOver Utility > Commanders.

Thanks! I'll definitely look into that.

Now off to see if there's any good audio games in some of these forums.

I know what you mean about telling the tell with JAWS on Windows. I miss that on macOS. My workaround is to read the time on the status bar. On a braille display just hit dots 2 3 and 4 twice or on a keyboard press VO and the letter m twice. You will have to read a few of the apps you have displayed there before you get to the time though.
