Can we use our iPhone to be a Remote control for a Mac?

I know that if a Phone can be used as a remote control, it must have the IR piece, but is there any other solution? like put something between the Ac and the phone? which can use the IR? and we can control it through our phones?
I need something that i can read my Ac status, Thanks
