Aggressive Scrolling in Chrome, Spotify etc

I often find when I am using Chrome or similar apps (e.g. Vivaldi and Spotify which I think just embed Chromium) that I am constantly fighting against the browser trying to scroll all the way to the top of the page all the time.

For example, I can be in a Spotify playlist, scrolling down and then for seemingly no reason I am back at the top again. Or I can be looking at a web page, swap to a different app, swap back and suddenly I'm at the top again.

I find this is particularly problematic trying to edit in Confluence, and I am constantly battling with trying to stay where I need to be.

This only happens with VoiceOver enabled. In some cases I can mitigate it by selecting some text and it will scroll to that text instead of the top. I suspect at least some of the problem is because I am not reliant on VoiceOver, so I am using it conjunction with a mouse (I can see a bit but my eyes are hit and miss). But I don't think this explains the problem with Confluence.

I feel your frustration. This is a long standing voiceover bug in macOS for at least the last three years. I can easily reproduce that with most HTML pages that include an image. It happens to me all the time with confluence, when attempting to read google docs or even Gmail messages.
For what it’s worth I figured out that if you hide the images it works around the problem but you can’t always do that.
I really wish Apple would solve this bug. Extremely disruptive and ruins your productivity

After we reading your regional comment where you mention that you have some eyesight and use voiceover I was wondering if you also use zoom. I personally am in the same situation where I have a little bit of eyesight so I use both zoom and voiceover.

Yes I certainly use zoom all the time, so it's certainly possible it's related.

I don't think my Confluence problem has anything to do with images because the docs I have been edited don't have any.

Well I am still continuously plagued by this problem. I am getting it when I am using pure VoiceOver without zoom. I can be scrolling through a long forum post and suddenly I'm back to the top of it and it'll take me a minute or two to try to find out where on earth I was before.

I suspect that it might be related to content that can live updater, even if it doesn't. For example, Confluence is always listening out in case someone else is editing the same page as you. Spotify is probably always looking out to see if the playlist I am scrolling through has been changed elsewhere. The forum posts I'm talking about probably have some kind of polling thing going on to check for new posts.

I have also been noticing other issues a lot that might be related whereby I open a new tab in a browser, but VoiceOver stays on the previous one. I find this if I am on bbc sports looking at text commentary of, say, a football game. I open a new tab, but VoiceOver isn't coming with me. I get this a lot in Chrome too but am less sure of the trigger. I think sometimes it might happen if I have a web menu open and go to a new tab. Sometimes going back and pressing ESC helps. Sometimes I just close all tabs in frustration.

I've reported it to Apple but I don't really know a good way for them to reproduce the problem.
