Workaround For iOS Key Input Bug

While using VoiceOver under iOS 26.4.2, my brother and I have been running into a nasty little VoiceOver bug that will come and go, and that makes Bluetooth keyboard use a major pain. For example, when the bug is active, I might be needing to enter a text field to type, but neither VO-Spacebar nor the up and down arrow combination will enable my keyboard text input. The bug also disables the toggling between edit and navigation modes with the right and left arrow combination. And, with the keyboard function key that serves as Play/Pause, the bug kills its functionality. Adding to the confusion, some Bluetooth hardware keys do continue to work when the bug is active, but other important keys are neutered.. Still, different Bluetooth input devices may be able to pass some keystrokes to the iPhone, but not others. For example, my Chubby Buttons media controller is less useful when this bug is active, definitely blocking the Play/Pause, and yet not interfering with other functions like Move Forward and Move Back.

Until recently, this bug seemed to turn on and off quite randomly. However, if you completely turned off VoiceOver, all the keys on all the Bluetooth input devices will work. Still, for some of us, turning off VoiceOver to get work done is not a great solution. We've seen this bug since at least iOS 26.3, and it didn't go away with 26.4. In fact, any solution or workaround eluded us until 26.4.2.

Fortunately, my brother discovered the condition that triggers the VoiceOver key input bug, and he knows how to turn it off. Apple will still need to fix the root cause, but the workaround is effective 100% of the time.

My brother's discovery was a delightful surprise. The bug is triggered when the iPhone is face down. For instance if you set your iPhone on a table, face down, the bug comes alive. Since many of us don't look at our screens, the VoiceOver bug is quite stealthy. If you happen to pick up the phone into a face up configuration, the VoiceOver bug disappears. Put it face down on a table to allow for Magsafe charging, you won't be able to enter a text field from your keyboard or stop your music playing from that device. And yet, my Air Pods Pro will continue to Play and Pause when squeezing the stalks regardless of the iPhone's orientation. Go figure.

Until Apple fixes this bizarre VoiceOver bug, you just need to keep your iPhone face up, or stored upright in a shirt pocket. The bug is active only when the screen is facing downward.

My brother and I have seen this bug on both an iPhone SE-3 and 16 Pro, and we had the bug hinder the use of an Apple Magic Keyboard, a Logitech Keys-To-Go keyboard, as well as my trusty Chubby Buttons media controller.

If you've seen this bug, you might also wish to alert accessibility@apple.com so that a bit more focus is placed on eradicating this pesky VoiceOver bug.
