Hi Dennis, you've a couple of options. One for all WhatsApp notifications and one for individual chats or groups.
For all:
Open WhatsApp and go to the Settings tab.
Select Notifications.
Select Sound and make your choice.
For individual chats:
Open WhatsApp and open the individual or group chat you want to assign.
Select the chat or group name heading at the top of the screen. VoiceOver should say it's a button but does not.
Select Wallpaper & Sound.
Select Alert tone at the bottom of the next screen and make your choice.

I've never cared enough to look into it fully but it looks like the sounds on offer are the standard iOS message alert sounds. It's the same list you'll find in the Settings app under Sounds & Haptics.
So perhaps if you purchase or import a sound into that, then it will also be available in WhatsApp. It's many years since I've imported a ringtone though, so I can't help you with that.

Can I use my own custom sound or am I stuck using there built in sounds?
