VoiceOver talks into iPhone alarm

Hi,
sorry for my bad English in advance, I'm just typing this without actually knowing the correct words.
So I'm a person who is very sensitive to sounds, so I set a very gentle alarm sound on my iPhone to wake up in the morning. I imported it to Apple Music library and then selected it from there in the native clock app. And now here is the problem: Whenever the alarm gets off, VoiceOver screams at me: "Alarm". First I thought I could simply toggle off speech but then I can't use the phone as a watch and I still get this stupid voiceover activation sound when the alarm starts. So what I don now is turning off VoiceOver over night and then turn it back on in the morning. But this is not ideal.
And then there is this problem where Apple Music set alarms often don't start at the beginning, but in the middle of the track which is not good for this kind of sound (downloaded, no streaming).
Anyone a solution for this?

I'd love a solution for this too. My alarm is set to start quietly and stay quiet but you would never know that with how freakishly loud VoiceOver screams as soon as it starts. I think this is a long standing problem that Apple has not deigned to look much into. The same thing will happen with any alarm set for any time. Doesn't matter how low your VoiceOver volume is, it will blare out of the phone speakers at the absolute max even when you have headphones in.

I’ve never tried this as a usual way turned off voiceover before going to sleep as I do have enough vision to see the stop button, but this could be a fix if you would rather leave voiceover on overnight. First, open the Shortcuts app and create a new automation. Next, set the automation to time of day and set it one minute before your alarm is supposed to go off. Then, have it wait one minute and 15 seconds voiceover will probably come back on 15 seconds later and you can then turn off the alarm. The only thing is that voiceover may still scream at you once it turns on so here is another idea. Turn off VoiceOver before you go to bed, then when the alarm goes off, push the volume or side button, which will snooze the alarm. Then turn on voiceover, and if you don’t want your alarm to be snoozed, tap the stop button on your lock screen.

Voiceover always says, "Alarm" and then the alarm sound.

The issues like these are why I have never used my phones alarm. I still use a regular standalone talking clock for an alarm. I do hope these issues get resolved for you guys that do you want to use your phone for an alarm though. That sounds really annoying to have Voice over yelling at you when you first get up in the morning. I wouldn’t want Voice ever yelling at me no matter what voice I’m using. Right now, my iPhone SE third generation and my iPhone 15 are using Karen enhanced voiceover. And then I am using British voice one for Siri. My favorite voice on my devices are going to use her. Hopefully we will get the issue results soon for the voices that aren’t working right now will work so that I can start using premium right now Karen enhances good work around.

This might be another solution, although I've never tried it since I'm not bothered by this. I have a Braille display though and perhaps I'll try this sometime. But even if you don't own a Braille display, just turn off VO speech with a 3-finger doubletap. This won't turn off VoiceOver altogether but will only silence speech. If you've turned on the Snooze setting for the alarm or timer, the Stop button will be the second one from the left. Or if you're using iOS 26 swipe 3 times to the right and then you should find the Stop button. Once you click that, the timer or alarm should stop and then you can turn speech back on with another 3-finger doubletap. I hope this explanation is clear enough.

I already tried this, but what happened was that before the alarm went off the phone activated and VoiceOver started making the classic VO sounds, so I would then have to turn those off as well. Aren't there any third-party alarm apps which are accessible and avoid this shit?

Even more ridiculous is that if you set your alarm to go off on your Apple Watch only, VoiceOver on the iPhone still shouts at you just before the watch alarm starts. Nuts.

Try going into settings, and sounds, and adjusting the system volume to be lower. That should bring down the overall volume. Maybe that will help your problems with sounds being too loud.

Hahahaha but guys. Alarms by nature are meant to wake you up. If they are soft you are likely to miss them. You don't want to blame Apple for missing your 7:05 bus, because you didn't hear your alarm.

The default label is alarm. If you change is to something else that VO won't speak, like some punctuation or just a space? I am not sure it works, but I remember someone suggesting this sometime back.

  • Set an automation to turn off VO a minute before your alarm is stopped, and then have VO turn on after your alarm snoozes or stops.
  • You can press the side button, the volume buttons, or the action button to snooze. You don't need to hold it down; a short press works.

Since that came up, does anyone have a good recommendation for a traditional radio alarm clock that's accessible? I've tried out the few I could find but they're rather over complicated and definitely for sighted people only, even the large print one. I deeply regret giving away my grandpa's old clock, that thing was so easy to understand.

I put my phone face down and watch wakes me up with the haptic and the sound. Do not hear VO.

What is a good alarm to try, you did not provide a link or a name.
