Voiceover Crashes Everything on iPhone 6 with iOS 11.1

Hello everyone!

I updated to iOS 11.1 yesterday and it’s basically been a mess ever since. I can’t get voiceover to read anything! It lags, maybe reads the first line of whatever I’m trying to read, and promptly crashes the app. This has happened with Outlook, Safari, email, and settings so far. I’m using an iPhone 6 but this is also happening on my iPad 2. Turning voiceover off hasn’t changed anything and apps still crash even after it’s off. Is there anything I can do about this problem? Thanks for any help!

Hi, I’m also in iOS 11.1. Yesterday, I’ve been experiencing The very same problem but only if I try to use Siri voice as The voiceover voice. I sorted out the problem by rolling back to one of the previous voiceover voices. Maybe you should try this. Good luck.

I uninstalled every voice that had the option. Still having the same problem with VoiceOver barely responding and then crashing the app. I don’t even know if I have a backup but I might have to try it out of desperation. I basically can’t use my phone or iPad because of this update. To say it’s frustrating is an understatement.

I definitely can understand your frustration! Sometimes, I feel myself disappointed with the way Apple is handling the voiceover bugs and how much it could badly affect visually impaired and blind people…

Hello Magic Retina,

Sorry to hear that you’re having so much trouble. This maybe a stupid question, but have you tried a hard reset? What I mean is try to close all apps if possible and then hold down the on/off or also called side button and the home button at the same time for about 15 seconds or so. You device will shut down and reboot. If you have some residual vision you should see the Apple logo when it restarts. This is when you release the two buttons, which takes approximately 15 seconds. Doing this has many times fixed some awkward issues that I have encountered in the past. I hope I could explain myself clearly. I hope this works for you.

Good luck and have a great day

Fritz

Thank you Fritz! The hard reset was the only thing I hadn't tried and it seems to have worked! Thank you so much! Time to do it on the iPad now.

Hello Magic Retina,

I’m glad to hear that it worked. I hope it works on your iPad also. I don’t know exactly what this “hard reset” does, but as far as I know it somehow cleans memory out and organizes things to how they should be. But take this information with a grain of salt. What I do know is that sometimes this little trick can do wonders, regardless of what it does. Like said, glad this did the trick.

Have a great day and enjoy iOS 11.1
