Hey my apple experts! IOS 14 6 months away, and I want to ask apple to add two voices for voice over. the first voice is for English scotland, and the second voice is the enhance version of the Indian voice, witch is added. What do you think? And what other voice you want apple to add?

hello,

theese voices make perfect sence because they are vocalizder ex[ressive and are all ready on the Mac. Apple should also do a vocalizer update in ios/iPad os 14. that will be also nice as the latest version has new voices which are in Android, especially if you're beta testing the vocalizer expressive app for that platform.
regards,
Daniel

I love the Alex voice both on my iPhone and my Mac. However, I think it would be cool to have Vicki, which is one of the built-in voices made by Apple, to come to iOS. Oh, and the Siri voices are available on the Mac. You just have to download them. However, they are a bit sluggish.

By Bingo Little on Monday, March 23, 2020 - 17:50

To begin with, I haven't heard a lot about this wonderfully human American Siri voice lately - the one that came with IOS13 last September and that Apple said was utterly brilliant. It would be nice to get that experience with the Siri UK voice and other Siri voices. Or is it that the American enhanced Siri voice wasn't actually that great after all? I do remember folk at the time feeling a little underwhelmed.

Beyond that, my choice would be the Ivona voices. If I could, i would have Brian voicing my iPhone. he's the best non-synthetic voice I've ever heard. He reads all my Voicedream texts. I doubt he's coming to the iPhone though as he appears very much incorporated into the Amazon ecosystem these days.

Sometimes Apple over state their new things and when they come out, they have more bugs than a hotel from New York. I would just be happy if iOS 14 be stable, free from bugs and work well. If I want bugs, I would go and stay in a hotel.

By PaulMartz on Monday, March 23, 2020 - 17:50

I'd be happy if Apple would just fix the pronunciation issues with the existing voices.

By roman on Monday, March 23, 2020 - 17:50

I agree with you all. They should fix existing bugs, and add more human voices like alex.

Hi
I fully agree with you. I love the Siri SA and Siri USA female voices plus Ava enhanced, but I will really be grateful if the pronounciation errors can be fixed.

By roman on Monday, March 23, 2020 - 17:50

The problem with the voices are: some times, the they sound more human, and sometimes, they sound more robotic. I love alex. Apple worked on him very well in turms of inflection. I hope that Apple adds more voices of their own.

By Ekaj on Monday, March 23, 2020 - 17:50

As everybody probably knows by now, I'm neutral regarding all these voices and I like what we currently have. Furthermore, I heartily thank Apple on their diligent accessibility efforts. But along those lines I do have a question. Back at the end of 2013 when I first got my Mac, I specifically remember having both Fiona from Scotland, and Jill from Vocalizer. That was OS X Mavericks. But somehow I managed to remove those 2 and haven't been able to get them back. Perhaps they don't like me anymore after I did that to them, lol! I'm not exactly begging for anybody's sympathy regarding this, but if Jill and Fiona could return they'd be most welcome.

Hello everyone. I’d love to see UK Siri female voice given a bit of a makeover. She needs some touches on the pronunciation, and to be made a bit more expressive. I’d also like to see Samantha being made a bit more expressive. I actually sent in a recording to apple, of Samantha asking for a makeover. It was funny. Nothing came of it though, obviously. But she would sound perfect if she was just a little more brighter and cheerful. I’d also like to see, and I know this is probably a bit far fetched, but I’d like Ivona, Acapela, and touch sounds like you get on the samsung phones when you double-tap on an item, you get the little bubble sound. That would be really cool. Either that or the ability to customize which sounds you hear when you select an item. I’m probably getting too carried away. If I was working for apple accessibility, I’d make sure we all had the requests that are on this page, and I’d probably create an API that would make it possible to record our own voices, or the voices of family and friends, and import them to an IPhone, so I could have certain people reading for me. I’d be interested to hear everyone’s thoughts on this post. I hope you all are staying safe during this difficult time of year.

hi
well.. I know people will call me very old for this but still, even if it is quite far fetched, I'd love to have dear old elequents. I love reading novels, blog articles and other things with that. somehow for me, may be its because ever since I learnt to use a computer I have only worked with elequents most of the time, I love it a lot :).
also, I'd love to have an enhanced much more.. better version of Indian voices.
well apple you did a smart move by putting Rishi as the voice for us.. a shortcut actually but I seriously hate that voice. and the Siri female, though its a little better, I'd love to see it enhanced.

By kool_turk on Monday, March 23, 2020 - 17:50

the Vickie voice is already there.

Unless you're refering to another one, the only voice that I know of by apple is Victoria.

By Robin on Monday, March 23, 2020 - 17:50

Hi, At least once a month I submit via Apple's feedback site asking for more voices indicating that I'd be willing to pay for them too. I'm not asking Apple to give me something for free at all. I'd love access to many of the voices I currently have in VoiceDream Reader too numerous to name but Julie is a particular favorite of mine. Perhaps others would be willing to submit feedback via Apple's feedback site as well. Just a thought. Take good, good care.

By roman on Monday, March 23, 2020 - 17:50

Hello. One of the poster has a very nice thought about several new features in voice over.

By Troy on Monday, March 23, 2020 - 17:50

I personally think that Alex while I like him he needs more inflection and also make Samantha like she was before ios9. She sounds like she smokes 20 packs a day. I don't know if they would do this but the amazon alexa voice would be a good voice as well.

By Shersey on Thursday, April 23, 2020 - 17:50

I really feel that Apple really does need to get on-board with this. On Android, there's built-in voices, but manufacturers can release apps on the Play Store so their voices can be downloaded. I think it would be cool for Apple to do this. The apps could control what voices were displayed in settings. If you didn't download the voice through the app, it wouldn't appear in the Settings app. There would need to be headings to separate the voices from different companies, so things wouldn't get all mixed up--or maybe a picker item to only display voices from a certain company. For example, both Nuance and NeoSpeech have a voice called Kate.

Speaking of Kate, I'd love it if NeoSpeech made their voices for Apple. Kate and James are my favorites from them. I'd also like to see more voices from Nuance get added, like Nathan and Fiona.

Thanks,
Shersey

By KE7ZUM on Thursday, April 23, 2020 - 17:50

I believe those voices you speak of are 32 bit. As android and apple no go 64 bit, they decided to actually pull eloquence from the play store and not even code it for us anymore. You can still use it if you have it, but if you do-not ...

I like your method, but I don't see it happening any time soon. I've written to apple accessibility several times over the past few years and get the reply that "we will pass it on to our engineering team." They probably have, but I don't think again this will indeed happen.

By Holger Fiallo on Thursday, April 23, 2020 - 17:50

People forget that iOS is a close system and you need to go through many steps to meet apple guidelines. Specially regarding security. I just be happy if apple send Siri for therapy for her speechproblem. She can not say "yesterday".

By Khushi on Thursday, April 23, 2020 - 17:50

hi
well, I agree with @Holger Fiallo. I wish yesterday was back...
I was thinking this.
how about cortana? the voice is good, right? what if.. though it cannot happen. but what if apple brings it to us? it'd be amazing!
:)

By WellF on Thursday, April 23, 2020 - 17:50

I think it would be very good if ios had Persian and Vietnamese voices.

By Queen Siren on Saturday, May 23, 2020 - 17:50

Hello. I think that in regards to the VoiceOver voices, I would also love some more customization. That is one thing that I love about my Android devices, I can constantly switch between Acapela, Cereproc, Google, and Eloquence voices whenever I wish. However, Apple is a closed platform, and that is a sacrifice that unfortunately, I think we have to make. As it happens, Nuance is practically the only engine that I very much dislike. I also really dislike Alex, so I really only enjoy the British Siri female voice. I know this is most likely out of the question, but I would pay a good amount to have access to Ivona voices. Their female voices are my favorite voices altogether. I also agree about NeoSpeech, I enjoy their voices as well. I would also be open to the idea of Apple creating a new voice, just maybe not as robust and harsh sounding as Alex and the Vocalizer voices. I do appreciate Apple's initiative with accessibility though, so I really like to avoid any complaining if possible. This lack of voices though is really the only major piece of feedback I would have for Apple.

As for the Cereproc voices, I find them to work well on Android. I have one working well on a BrailleNote, and I am doing a bit of accessibility testing with one on another Android device. They do not seem to lag much more than an Acapela voice, or the native Google voices. I know that they were previously very laggy, but I think that has been fixed. However, that will depend on the specs of your device.

Hello, Queen Siren,

I see what you mean, but this whole closed platform argument that many people have used for years is kind of silly to me. Sure, iOS is a closed platform, but that only means that Apple hasn't done the work to plan out how to open up the system to third-party voices while still keeping things secure. This can obviously be done, as Apple has already demonstrated with their third-party keyboard support and the calls from other apps being integrated into the phone app. Now, if they'd just add voices that people want, that'd be great!

Thanks,
Shersey

Thank you for your response. For me, the voice problem is something I sort of overlooked, it used to never bother me. It wasn't really until I got my Amazon Fire tablet, and later my BrailleNote, that I started getting interested in customization. I suppose I am just very appreciative of how accessible the Apple operating systems are, I never wanted to complain. I do think you are right though, integrating some third party voices does not really seem too difficult, especially as there seems to be some users who would be willing to pay for them. There are also free, open source options, ones that I have seen on Linux like eSpeak and Festival. Thank you again for your reply.

By Ishkabibble on Saturday, May 23, 2020 - 17:50

I heard a little while back Apple is developing something that would allow third-party developers to make/use their own voices or something like that. I apologize if I misremembered this I just recalled this off the top of my head. I use Alex and really like it, but it would be nice if other speech engines (Ivona, Cereproc, Eloquence even), were added just for variety.

By Queen Siren on Saturday, May 23, 2020 - 17:50

In reply to by Ishkabibble

If other engines were to be added, it would likely not be Eloquence. This is because Code Factory has stopped its development. There is a very legit site though, for those who are interested in Eloquence, where you can get a copy. This is called the Blind Help Project. You can download it for Android, Windows, and Linux. Ivona may be difficult to acquire because it is now owned by Amazon, but maybe not impossible. I am not sure how NeoSpeech or Cereproc would go. I am going to do some more research on this topic.

Hi Holger
Your message regarding bugs made me laugh. Thanks for that. The American Siri female voice, of all the female voices, sounds like a human voice. Pity. Huge pity regarding all the pronounciation errors. These errors are also to be found in both male and female Siri South-African voices. I so hope the new American female voice will become available for all countries in IOS 14.

I would like to have Keynote gold voice, the one from the classic brailleNote back in 2002, and also decTalk as voices for apple or android. Keynote gold is or was, one of my favorite tts engines back in the 90s.

Hello. I think there are a lot of people who would want these older engines for their devices. The only thing is, a lot of these engines, including KeyNote and DecTalk, have not been updated in a long time. This may be problematic with the newer operating systems, as I am not sure that these voices have been updated in a long time. The closest voice that I can recommend to DecTalk and KeyNote on Apple devices, would be Fred, or any of the other old Mac voices.

By roman on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

They should add more older mac voices like bruce, we have frad, and other voces. Because they work smooth with IOS softwheres. I love alex, because it is very smooth wih voice over. I know it sound qualoty is not purfect, but it works great.

By Bingo Little on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

Blimey! Keynote Gold? that's twice I've read about it in the space of two forum topics! Longing for Eloquence I can sort of get but I didn't see the Keynote Gold thing coming? I guess it would be amusing for a while but once I'd typed 'bha humbug. I hate the school holidays. Every year it's always the same.' a couple of times, reliving the opening words to a text adventure that only seemed to work with Master Touch and Keynote Gold, the novelty would wear orf, I think. But if you're really into the retro voices, there are others. Why not have the good old Apollo voice - Synthetic Dave as I think he is known by Dolphin these days? Or going back even further you could have your iPhone drawing on the magnificent expressive power of the Mimmic speech synthesiser, saying '9600 board' every time you powered on the iPhone...the possibilities, or the dreams, are endless.

By Siobhan on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

Dude, I'm sorry. Orf? Haha. Seriously though, this is what bugs me to no end. I see so much of I want a game from 30 years ago, now i want voices. How about the old echo speech voice? If a 32 bit app can't run on an iPhone now, what the hell makes you think someone would be willing to develop a 64 bit version? I mean when is enough enough? Apple has never been, nor wil be, a screen reading company. yet we are never satisfied with the voices that those of of us like so much. If I had my choice, i'd want to get rid of all the voices but maybe the default, and what i use, nothing else. but i respect language, region and other dilects come into play. i'll never understand how the people want things from so long ago. I mean if it worked so much better then, why was innovation successfull with the phone, or the Mac and installation without sighted help? I mean, why try? Shakes head, ends rant.

By Bingo Little on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

My plea for the 9600 board speech synthesiser on IOS clearly hasn't taken orf.

Hi
I’d also love to use the new siri female voice which came with ios 13 as a voiceover voice
I don’t know about you, but i noticed a difference in that and would be really happy to use it as my primary voice, i currently use US siri female as my voice
I can’t stand those new Indian once, though i use it in siri, not that often.
I’ll also try siri female UK voice

By GeorgeStark on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

well i want eSpeak max as a voiceover voice, cause it supports so much languages whitch vocalizer does not

By roman on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

Hello. I do not like the Indian voices. it is awful. I love the vocaliser indian voices tho, they are pritti good. specially Sangita.

By BlackCat on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

In reply to by Khushi

I would also like to use the new US female voice, but doubted if it will become available in South-Africa. The current Siri US female voice to me is the most natural sounding voice of all the female voices. Just a great great pity that she pronounces many comman English words wrongly for example: customise as customees and enterprise as enterprees. If Appple O! so please can sort this out?

By Robin on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

As Blackcat points out there are a lot of messed up pronunciations in #VoiceOver land these days. I just discovered much to my horror today that Samantha at least now can't say chooses she says chawses and township is still town sip and now clear to me sounds more like clare. Not the biggest thing in the world but is mildly annoying.

By cati on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

Hi. I've heard at least two different people talk about voices that are on Mack that aren't on iOS on this thread. I'd love to see Apple make more of there own voices for the iOS devices, or maybe a voice like Alex, but a female voice, and one that's not so big in file size.

By Queen Siren on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

In reply to by cati

Hello. I would have to agree with you on Apple adding new voices. However, I am not particularly keen on getting the old Mac voices, like Bruce, because I find them particularly outdated and robotic myself, I personally prefer the more human sounding voices. I would agree with the idea of a female voice, as I really do not enjoy Alex at all. I find his voice to be very rough and too verbose, and I really don't enjoy the breathing simulation at all. I prefer a female, middle-aged sounding voice, with only some inflection. The closest to this that I can find on Apple devices is either Ava, or the Siri UK voice, but not the US voice, as that voice sounds like someone in their early twenties, which, not in an offensive way, I do not enjoy in text to speech. Other examples of voices that I find to be good are Ivona's Sally and Kendra, and Acapela's Heather. These are just my opinions though.

By Khushi on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

hey, how about Alexa voice?
I don't own an Alexa device myself, but actually love that voice. it's a lot more human and I find it nice to be used as a text to speech device.
:)

By cati on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 - 17:50

My best friend and I would like to see some of the voices that are already in iOS improved. My best friend says that some of them sound like they've smoked a pack of cigaretts a day.

Hello. The Alexa voice sounds like a nice idea, I am not sure if Apple would pull that off though, as they would probably need to pay a good amount to acquire it from Amazon. Customers would also probably need to be willing to pay as well. What I find interesting about the Alexa voice, is that it is not even available for use on the fire tablets with VoiceView. I use one, and there is a selection of the Ivona voices, but there is no option to use the Alexa voice for text to speech. I think it would be a good idea though.
