Triggering an automation when Airplane Mode is turned off?

Hi there, so I currently have an issue. Every time I land from a flight, I have to send a text messages to 3 different people, and then make a call on WhatsApp right away. The problem is that I’m also trying to gather all my things and do all that and there’s just not enough time. Is there a way I can tell my phone to send the text messages and make the call right when I turn off Airplane Mode?

Suspect not. You can't even use the scheduling message feature as messages are stored on an apple server and not locally.

It is tricky, a pain in the backside, and while I know of one way to do this, my way may not be the best way. Steps are below:

Sending a message

  1. Open the shortcuts app. At the bottom are three tabs, obviously we want Automation.

  2. On the next screen double tap on the add button. You will now be in a list of scenarios. These are your, "when", situations. We want the one simply labeled Airplane Mode.

  3. Double tap on Airplane Mode. By default the, "is turned on", option will be selected. Double tap to unselect, then double tap on, "is turned off", button.

  4. Also make sure "run immediately" is selected, and "notified with run" is turned off. Double tap on "next" in the upper right corner.

  5. Double tap on the "Get Started" button. On the next screen, double tap (or triple tap) on the "New Blank Automation" button.

  6. On this screen, find the "Send message" option and double tap on it. You will now be on the shortcut editing screen. Look for the action that will read like this, "Send, message, too, recipient". Swipe up or down on the action rotor here, and choose to edit the word recipient. Replace with however many contacts you need.

  7. When you have your contacts added, look for the done button on the upper right corner. Double tap on it to complete this part of the automation.

Anytime airplane mode is turned off, a text message conversation with your contacts auto populated will pop up on your screen. Unfortunately, you still have to manually add your message. I do not yet know how to auto generate a message through shortcuts/automations.

Making a WhatsApp phone call

  1. Follow the steps above until you get to the part where you are choosing the "Send message" option. Instead, look for the WhatsApp option and double tap on it.

  2. Like before you will now be in the shortcut editing screen, there should be an auto generated list of options here with choices such as, "call contact one", and, "call contact two", etc. Where contact One and contact too would obviously be actual contacts you have through WhatsApp. If the contacts you want are in this list, just double tap on that choice, and then double tap on done. Otherwise, double tap on any of the contacts, and just repeat step six from the text message option above, replacing the contact you selected, with the contact or contacts you need.

  3. Double tap on done in the upper right corner after you have added your contacts.

Ideally, whenever these automations run, you will get a text message conversation with the contacts already filled in, and an edit field all ready for you to type in your message. Immediately afterwards, WhatsApp should pop up, calling your contacts.

Some things to note here, this automation will run absolutely anytime airplane mode is turned off. So be careful with that. Also, I'm sure there is a more simplified way of doing this, or a more streamlined way, unfortunately my skills were shortcuts are limited. Apologies for that. πŸ˜
