Sometimes Siri is activated simply by pressing the side button: do you also go through this?

Hello, friends, I hope you are well.

I can't say precisely when this started to occur, but the fact is that Siri has been triggered only by pressing the side button, you don't need to press. This is very annoying, because I usually use the side button to turn on the screen, and not to call the virtual assistant.

Just to contextualize, I'm using the stable version of iOS, 17.2, on an iPhone 11 Pro Max in perfect condition. Now that I'm writing, the behavior occurred twice.

I just wanted to know if anyone else goes through this, so I can make sure if the problem is specific or generalized.

Thank you for your attention!

Big hug!

Subject line says it. Try not holding the button down too long. I assume you are talking about the sleep/wake button on the right-hand side of the phone, opposite the volume buttons?

I have an iPhone SE 2022, and it used to be that just the lightest press of the Home button would sometimes activate Siri. I also use original OEM wired earpods and sometimes when pressing the center button to play/pause, Siri will activate.
Personally I think this has been going on in a lot of iPhones over the years, and is likely some kind of programming interrupt.
I have found a work-around for the Home button at least. I have disabled press Home for Siri in the Siri settings, and just use a different gesture now.

Haven't figured out any way around the earpod issue, though. 🤷

Yeah, friend, but that's the question: I just press the side button lightly, I don't press for a long time, but sometimes the iPhone gets it wrong.

Exactly, I'm talking about the side button that serves to, among other functions, wake up the phone.

It's happening since many IOS version prior. Happens mostly when I press the side button to wake up the phone. Siri gets triggered.

You gently tap the side button. You don't press and hold it for a second or two.

I remember that I encountered the same behavior with the iPhone 13 and iOS 15. But I've never encountered it again since I have the 15 Pro Max - currently running iOS 18.2.

This has been happening to me since I upgraded to iOS 18.2. I thought I was going nuts and doing something wrong but I've used the iPhone since the iPhone 4 was out and, I would think, have been pressing the buttons in the exact same way. So when this started happening a couple weeks ago I thought something physically wrong with my Side button on my phone. And it's odd because sometimes I'll press it and I feel like I need to wait an unusually long amount of time for siri to activate. Something strange and it's not just me

On my SE 2022, when I go to settings, accessibility, home button, I can choose the speed in which the device registers a double or triple click. There are also controls here for what happens when I press and hold the home button, such as activate Siri, activate classic voice control (pretty much abandoned since iPhone 4), or off. Those of you with more modern devices, will have a "side button" option, rather than a home button option, but the controls inside should be the same. For the screen, I set mine to slow, which was the last option I believe.
I also went to settings, accessibility, touch, and adjusted haptic touch settings to be slower as well.

For me, these settings have more or less fixed this issue.

You guys will have to experiment with your iPhones and see if it works for you, especially those of you without a home button.

HTH.

Occasionally, especially when my phone is processing something else, and I tried to press the side button, it will trigger Siri. It’s only happened two or three times the whole entire time I’ve owned my iPhone 16 Pro Max, which has been a little over two months. Back when I had my 14 pro, I think this happened again like once or twice. I got my iPhone 14 Pro pretty much right after it came out.
I have also experienced the issue where you hold the side button down, and you have to wait a long time before Siri pops up, almost like how long you had to wait in order for classic voice control to appear on the iPhone 4 and earlier. I was around when that was the latest, and it would take about 3 to 4 seconds to launch classic voice control.
P.S., I’ve actually used classic voice control a few iOS versions back, believe it was 16. It was still just as crappy as in iOS 4-9, the versions I remember using it in the most.
