Seeking recommendations for a reliable iOS weather app

Hello.

I was hoping to get some opinions on a topic regarding weather. To me, the native iOS weather app is garbage. It doesn't read the basic information that people will need, most notably the chance of precipitation, unless you're reading the hourly forecast. It also has many issues reading the current weather conditions. So my question is what do people recommend as their favorite weather app that is reliable and, of course, accessible? Please feel free to elaborate. Thanks in advance.

I was wondering the same thing. I used to use Degrees and found it to be very accessible. It also allowed you to set up notifications for weather alerts and multiple locations. Unfortunately, this app seems to have stopped working with IOS9. has anyone else experienced the same issues? Thanks.

Sadly to report that the Degrees has gone under. The developer behind the Degrees have packed up and left. As you will find that it is no longer in the AppStore to purchase. This was my most favorite weather app of the day. It did everything that I could ask from a weather app. I have yet to find another app that offered the same thing that we would or could find in the Degrees app. I would also like to hear what others have found to be their go to weather app. A lot of them are rather clunky and involve a lot of swiping. I like a weather app that would follow me and give a very easy layout of weather information.

I use and recommend dark sky. I also was a huge fan of degrees and very unhappy when they went under. Quite a shame.

Weather radio is still a fave for me. I also like an app called Rain Alarm. It lets you know if rain or thunder is in your immediate area. Both are good.

By brandon armstrong on Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 11:20

I also highly recommend weather radio, I also recommend dark sky as well to let you know when the rain or snow was in the area. Dark sky has really gotten a lot of great reviews.

Not only will it give current weather for your area and others you select, but you can use it like a weather radio that sighted people get from Radio Shack or other electronic stores. You can select what weather conditions you choose to be made aware of when dangerous weather approaches. Totally Voice-Over friendly.

I could give a few weather apps that work well with VO. I recommend Dark sky, the weather channel, Weather alert USA, which gives you NWS information, plus audio feedback like weather radio for lots of different locals around US.

I really like Dark Sky myself, would definitely recommend it

I find this invaluable to me. I live in a very cold state during the winter months and I need to know when it's going to start freezing. I only have a crawl space under my house, where the plumming resides, and I have to monitor things there. Weather Radio helps greatly for this type of notification as well as others that you can turn on/off.

As a nice second app, I also recommend Dark Sky. I like knowing when the precipitation is starting soon in my local area. Weather Radio is my primary app, though.

Any suggestions for Canada that involve alert features that work?
I've tried a few apps but they all rely on NOAA for the alerts, which is US-only.

Degrees was a great app, mainly because the info came directly from the National Weather Service and because it had a very streamlined user interface.

For most people, I'd recommend Weather Radio by WDT. It's very accessible, and the alerts are very timely. You can also get lightning alerts for an additional yearly in-app purchase.

If you want National Weather Service forecasts, I'd recommend Forecast Now or the ad-free version, Forecast Now+. The forecasts are presented in an easy-to-navigate interface, though you do have to swipe around a little bit more than you did with Degrees.

For people wanting access to both the 7-day forecasts and certain other technical products, Weather Alert USA is the best option I've found thus far. It doesn't provide access to SPC outlooks, though, and I wouldn't recommend relying on Weather Alert USA for timely push notifications for weather warnings.

I've noticed that people recommend an app and stop. This, to me, doesn't do all tha much. For example, why do you recommend this or that app? Give at least a little information about what you suggest, please.

I am also looking for a good Canadian weather app sense degrees stopped working.

By sockhopsinger on Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 11:20

This is really great to get all of these suggestions. I have the Weather Radio app which is very good. I am wanting one that does an hourly forecast. It's great to know that it might rain, but would be nice to get a good idea of when it will start. The Weather Channel app has been tried, and for over a year now, it has been very clunky and unresponsive for Voiceover friendliness. Maybe they have updated it since I deleted it from my phone and I should give it another try. The others are new to me, so I thank you all for the suggestions.

I too recommend weather radio, It gives me hourly forcasts from either vo or the built-in audio, and alerts for my area. I also have the lightning alert feature wich I like as well because it tells me when there's lightning in the area, it also tells me when the area is clear of it.

Your best bet, believe it or not, is the built-in weather app. It also gives the probability percentage of precipitation.

By boounga on Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 11:20

I usually don't sign up to post once but yeah with degrees gone you want Celsius 2. It is not nearly as good but it does use environment canada weather. The radar isn't nearly as nice and it does show weather alters from ENV Canada.

When I want to see the radar that Degrees had I load up app called weather office that uses ENV Canada as well. It just an ugly app that I don't like using. Weather office also does american weather from NOAA.

I would recommend Dark Sky.

It is not only easy to navigate but it also has a nice notification which when activated sends you notification when precipitation is about to occur in your area. That, to me, is a nice feature especially when I utilize public transit often.

By Wayne Scott Jr on Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 11:20

I recommend AccuWeather. I find it very accessible and it will give you alerts when something is going on like lighting and fire alerts.

By sockhopsinger on Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 11:20

So I have the Weather Radio app, but I have never found a way to get an hourly forecast. The problem I have with the stock weather app is that it will oftentimes not read the current conditions. Also, when checking the forecast by the day, it doesn't read out about the probable winds or the chance of precipitation.

Hello all--

Just wanted to chime in here on the Dark Sky application. I like the app, but I have one really big issue with it. Unless you are willing to allow location services settings all the time, thus draining your battery faster then one needs to, you cannot take advantage of everything the application offers. For example, unless I allow location services to the "always" setting, I am not notified of the expected hi/low temperature for the day, or potential freeze/precipitation alerts in notification center. This is disappointing. I do not understand why it is necessary to need location bbased services to always be on in order to provide this information. If one opens the application once or twice a day, I figure the application will update the forecast info and give you the latest information at the time you designate you want it. Am I correct, or is this just operater error and I am missing something? Because unless I allow location access to always, I do not receive those additional alerts mentioned above. I only get the rain alerts.

It needs to be open in case an unexpected storm pops up, when you travel around from place to place. It might be sunny one time, but say you take a train to another part of the city, you could be walking into a severe thunderstorm. Just an example.

Like the subject says, I'm looking for a good weather app that will work outside of the US. I live in Norway and I have yet to find a good weeather app that will work here.
I see most of you recommend either Dark Sky or Weather Radio. Are they both US based, or will they work in e.g. Norway too?
Take care :)

Hello Andrew,

The first thing to keep in mind is that I know that logically one would assume that since an app like Dark Skies does indeed always have the Location Services set to on. You would think it would drain the battery at a horrible rate. However, that is a pretty common myth of that doing that very thing. Some apps like a very intensive GPS app that would be correct. Most all other apps such like the Dark Skies does a great job of not doing that was design in such a way it hardly touches your battery even if that Location Services is always on for the app. Yes, one will have to allow Dark Skies to use the Location Services set to Always. That would be the same for in the Background App Refresh. That will also have to be set to on. I've used this app for several years and never had issues with the battery for that app. You can watch your consumption of your battery by going in to the Settings -> Battery and check to see what is consuming your battery. You will always see that Dark Skies barely registered on the list. Unfortunately, this is an app that must require that the Location Services and Background App Refresh to be on at all time to work as it should. That would be said to most of the Weather app that I’ve used that offers alerts and notifications on a variety of weather information.

HTH

Hello Cliff,

The Wather Radio is indeed US specific. However, I'm not certain about Dark Skies for Norway users. As I know it will work for say in United Kingdom but not sure for Scandinavia folks like yourself. Michael and I have been trying very hard to find a great weather app that would fit for everyone all across the globe. Unfortunately, we have not found such a gem at this point. We can only keep asking for great people out there in the blind community if they know of anything. I hope there is such an app that will fit this bill. So here is for hoping we will hear about a perfect weather app. If you do indeed find one please do let us know about it!

Take care!

By Cliff on Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 11:20

Hi Thomas, and thanks a lot for your quick reply regarding a weather app that will work for e.g. us norwegian guys...
Well, I guess I'll just go ahead and check out Dark Sky for my self then, and just see if it will give me any information here. My guess is that if it works in the UK, it'll probably work here too.
I'll post back here if I can get it to work :)
Thanks again and take care

By Cliff on Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 11:20

Hi again! Just a quick update on dark sky for norwegian users:
Dark Sky is unfortunately not available in the norwegian app store, so I guess that gives me a clue that it therefore won't work in norway either... So I'm out of luck on that one.
Let me know if any of you awesome people have any other suggestions for what might work here! :)
All the best

For those who used and liked Degrees, I recommend giving Weather Office a try. Weather Office is very accessible, and it provides weather information for the U.S. and Canada--either from the National Weather Service (U.S.) or Environment Canada (Canada). VoiceOver reads the text-based information in the app very well, and this is about as streamlined of a weather app as one could want.

By Toonhead on Sunday, October 25, 2015 - 11:20

Weather office rocks! It reminds me a lot of the degrees app, so if you guys miss that one, Weather Office is an amazing replacement. I'm very satisfied. I have several weather apps on my phone including Dark Sky, Weather Radio, and Weather Office, so feel free to give it a try. It just does what it's supposed to do without any real clutter or other accessibility issues.

Cliff and Others asking about international usage of Dark Sky, here's the announcement pasted from their support web page, where you can leave your email and country information, then double tap the pop up button for "Let me know…"

When will Dark Sky support my country?

Dark Sky only works in the United States (including Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico) and the British Isles, but we want to expand our coverage. The biggest obstacle is getting access to the radar networks in other countries – both from a technical and legal standpoint – which is something we’re actively investigating. Fill out this form and we’ll tell you when Dark Sky supports your country.

Hello lovely people,

I'm trying to fetch an accessible weather app for my country (India). Even though I can refer with the default one which is already in my iPhone, I would like to have more discriptive information on weather warnings and mainly about rain warnings. so that I can decide whether I have to carry an umbrella or not to my work. smile.

Could someone let me know if anyone of you found one already?

Raaj.
