Screen Recording

iOS and iPadOS

Dear all,
I have an issue with the screen recording feature in IOS 11. During recording, the VO is heard through the ear piece of the phone and after recording, during playback, VO volume is very low such that one hardly hears it.
I'm using an iPhone 6S, IOS 11.2.5. What is the remedy?

Regards,

I use headphones without a microphone, but for some reason it does catch my game, but not VoiceOver. Is there a way to make it catch VoiceOver?

For the first few betas of iOS11, Screen Recording worked beautifully on the iphone, as it continues to do on the iPad. Then, they "broke it", apparently for ever more! Since then, turning on the microphone indeed causes Voiceover audio to reroute to the earpiece. Not only does this render it completely useless for Voiceover users, but it even creates a serious problem for sighted users working with Vo. I mean, if they have to hold the phone to their ear to hear what is going on, they can't see the screen, can they.

I have reported this problem to Apple Accessibility several times, as have many others that I know. Apple even acknowledges that they're receiving these reports and has promised me (and probably many others) that they'll let me know when there's a change. Well, here we are, well over a year later, still no fix.

Of course, this is a real shame, given the incredible benefit to be gained from proper accessibility to this app. During that oh so brief "Golden Age" when it worked properly, I recorded a couple of excellent multi-media demos. Oh sure! I had to practice a bit to get a balance between the phone volume and distance from the microphone, but te audio and video were great - a perfect stand alone solution to be used from almost any quiet place with an internet connection

Quite frankly, given the potential of this feature, I'm surprised that there hasn't been much more outcry in regard to getting it fixed. And BTW, the same problem occurs in EveryCord, so don't waste your time trying THAT on your iPhone either. If video is involved, audio goes off to the earpiece when you turn on the mic. Period.

The silly thing is, that as long as it's audio only, you're fine with apps like voice memos. Start recording one, then go all over your phone. Audio comes through the speakers and gets picked up by the mik with excellent quality

The reason I mention this last point is in regard to a post where someone supposed that this earpiece routing was to prevent feedback because of speaker/mic proximity, but this is not the case, as just mentioned, and also because the feature worked very well in the first few betas.

I realize that Apple is becoming ever more eletist in its over-confidence and thus, generally paying less attention to user input as time goes on - the disappearance of the headphone jack, etc. And for those who would argue, I would at least say that failure to resolve this Screen Recording issue after all this time is a most excellent case in point. Let's see if "Applevis Collectiveness" can actually have a positive effect on this situation.

After starting a screen recording, you can switch audio output back to the iPhone's speaker by going to the Control Center and changing the audio route.

It's a bit of a fiddle, but only takes a few seconds.

I will often then trim this part from the final recording.

Hello Eileen,
Thanks so much for this. One wonders why Apple has chosen to make us figure this out on the iPhone when it could so easily be made to work properly as it does on the iPad. But maybe as the stock value goes DOWN, Apple will smarten UP! I'm sure you know, but I'll mention it for others, that once you have the audio rerouting changed, it seems to stay that way for subsequent recordings. I think I killed it when I turned on the com pilot for my hearing aids, but at least I've figured out how to switch back again. Thanks again, and kind regards, Tom Dekker

I've been having a few problems with the screen recording feature lately. Other than the sound defaulting to the earpiece of the iPhone, there are times when I screen record something, and even though my screen curtain is off, there is a black screen. Does anyone know what can be recorded, and what cannot be recorded? Also, there are times when I would like to record my screen from one of the Apple apps such as iMovie to properly edit a video, and voiceover is not heard in the recording. Does anyone no what's happening here? And then there are times when I will screen record something, but when I import it into iMovie to edit it, the sound is not there. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one having these problems, and I can't seem to find anything on the Internet. Weird! And I don't have a computer, so it's not like I can completely reset my device.
