By accident, I came across an app called Rebokeh. (Free at time of posting) It’s an assistive app for those with visual impairment. By pointing your phone at signs, menus etc, you can adjust the screen to enhance what you’re looking at, by adjusting colour, contrast etc.
I’ve used apps that read the text, but they tend to read superfluous stuff as well, plus everyone around me is subjected to the narration.
I’m severely visually impaired and when I first saw the demo video, I thought meh! Don’t know how it would help me.
Boy was I wrong, I used it for the first time a few days ago to read a menu. I usually struggle as they are normally black text on white, depending on the lighting and glare etc. it’s a nightmare. My wife more often than not, has to read it to me. With Rebokeh, I inverted the display colour and using the zoom function I could happily read the menu.
I’m looking forward to buying a birthday card for my wife now, I normally have to get a member of the shop staff or another customer to read them out for me.
