Hi,
did the iPhone ever work right with VoiceOver since you got it, or has it been doing this ever since you first tried to start it up? Maybe it's still waiting to be activated? Just tripple click the power button to turn VoiceOver on and off. Does that work?

The first time I was using my new iPhone X X I also was having problem with unlocking my iPhone. I discover that to open it, when using your finger going up, the first time you will hear a clikc and if you keep going you will hear another. That will open it and the sound will come to the middle of the iPhone. To go to app switch, you keep going until you hear the third click close to the top. In total you will hear 3 clicks. Do not pay attention to the first click. Also iOS 12 did not work to well with face ID until I updated to 12.01
