Overdrive and iOS11.2

iOS and iPadOS

Hello all,
I just replaced iOS 10.3.3 with iOS 11.2 today. Everything I have tested seems to be working well until I tried resuming reading an ebook using the Overdrive app.

Overdrive was working fine with the older iOS but seems to be broken with the latest iOS.
Is anyone here experiencing problems using Overdrive to read ebooks under iOS 11.2?

I figured out how to change chapters in the latest version of overdrive . however, reading a chapter is very difficult. It takes about a minute for voiceover to start reading. And you can’t do anything with voiceover until it starts reading.
I’m very disappointed in overdrive because their new replacement app called Libby keeps telling us to use overdrive because it’s more accessible.

Hi there,
I use the Overdrive app all the time to listen to books from my local audio library and the RNIB library database and the app works fine for me apart from the old problem of not being able to adjust the volume etc. when using Voice Over.
However, I have not tried the ebook reader on the Overdrive app for some time but I did notice over the last week or so that there have been two updates. I'm not sure what these did but you might find that you are not using the latest version. If you are, you might like to try deleting the app and reloading, although this might be a pain as you will need to login again or simply try a reset?

i guys,
Just to clarify, I updated my Overdrive app on 2nd Dec. and updated to iOS 11.2 on 3rd Dec. so I am not sure if it is a problem with the latest iOS or Overdrive.
I did also reinstall the Overdrive app.
The problem only seems to manifest itself in the two ebooks that I have loaded. I have currently only one audio book loaded and it seems to work fime.
If you have an ebook loaded, the first thing you might notice is that the book/title menu button is now announced by voiceover simply as vutton. It seems to retaim the same functionality as before. I usually read chapter by chapter by doing a two finger swipe down and let voiceover do the rest. However, as Bobcat pointed out, there is a long pause between the gesture and voiceover actually starting to read. However, once started it seems to read OK.
If you did not know how Overdrive was supposed to work you would have a pretty hard time figuring it out.
There does not seem to be a way to report these types of problems to Overdrive other than through your local library, which I have unsuccessfully tried in the past.

Hi Frankd,
Yes, you are right. There seems no way to contact Overdrive INC, although you could do a search on the internet to see if you can find them.
I am in the UK and if my recollection is correct, I did a search about a year ago when Overrive did an update and caused a number of difficulties for users such as login and password issues, playing audio book issues etc. However, when I found them on the internet, they were listed as a US company with an address and telephone number but no e-mail address, so, I found it difficult to contact them.
However, I contacted the UK's Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and they sorted it out quite quickly with Overdrive. So, if you are anywhere near the UK, then get in touch with the RNIB but if you are in the US try searching for them on the internet and see where that gets you.

hello Steven,
Actually I'm located in Canada and I am not sure if the CNIB gets involved in these types of issues. However, after a little digging around I did uncover this support request link:
https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/3317273/Social-Media-Support-Form
I did file a problem report with Overdrive so hopefully they might take a look at it.
Judging by the number of responses there are not that many people using Overdrive to read ebooks these days.

Hi Folks,
Overdrive support sent me an email today confirming the problems identified above and that they are working to resolve the issue. Hopefully people attempting to read ebooks will be getting better results soon.
I have to say that the Overdrive support people have been very responsivd and courteous.

Hi again Frankd,
As I say, I find that large companies are not that responsive and caring about issues from people who need something outside the standard i.e. those with specialist requests - they probably don't understand the problems VI people face and the solutions required.
I have taken a note of the Overdrive support e-mail and will use it in the future if I experience any problems.
Please note that in the UK the RNIB has used the Overdrive system (including the web site and IOS app) for almost all of its catalogue of audio books and UK users can now either order their audio books by DAISY CD, USB stick or direct download via the Overdrive app. I'm not sure how many audio books there are but it must be thousands. For me, rather than sending for books on CD, I now use the Overdrive app to download audio books straight away, a brilliant system which is accessible and gives me similar access to books like sighted people get. So, Overdrive is used a lot in the UK.
