This one Has baffled me. Any ideas please?

Hello everyone. Well the following question has certainly got me stumped, so just wondering if anyone could offer any thoughts as to what's going on please? I have a certain text tone assigned to a particular contact so I know when they message me, but for some reason, during the course of today (ever since I was forced to perform a re-set on my phone using the power and home button job), alerts of messages from the said contact have been coming to me using the phone's default text message tone. This is despite the fact that the assigned text tone is still definitely selected. I have already tried de-selecting the tone and then selecting it again but this has made no difference. Can anyone shed any light on what could be going on for me please? Is there anything else I could try in order to get the designated tone working again for the contact it has been assigned to. Many thanks in advance, and apologies if these weird goings-on are baffling anybody else as much as me lol :)

If you have more than one phone number for the contact. Once you do a hard reset, it might cause the phone to assign the default because it no longer has the assignment in memory. I have experienced the same thing with ring tones. I will assign a ring tone to someone and for some reason and after an extended period of time, the ring tone will revert back to the default. I am purely speculating. I don't know that to be the reason.

I wondered that, which is why i de-selected then reassigned the tone, but doing so has made no difference. There is only one phone number for the contact.

I didn't know you can have individual text tones.

You certainly can. You can have an assigned text tone and ringtone as well. Useful as another way (apart from caller ID that voiceover tells you) of knowing who is calling/texting you. You set it up in the create new contact or when you edit an existing contact.

Also, you can create different vibrations for different contacts.

For example, I've created a 3d-touch-like tap for when my Aunt sends me a message. I have an iPhone 6, but I honestly think it's acting like an iPhone 9++++.

Have a great day

Well there's something new i've learned - i didn't realise you could assign different vibrations. It's something i think i'd find very useful. Is it possible on the iPhone SE or is it something only the 6 onwards can manage? I've not found anything more advanced on here than having vibration on or off, but i would happily stand corrected - it could be i just don't know what i'm looking for. It's a feature i would definitely look at using if it's possible.

Oh right. I'll have to take a better look. Why have i never come across it before i wonder. I've only had this phone since may 2016 lol.

Hi Rachel,

If you haven't already, try removing the contact and adding their number again. Afterward, give that contact the text tone that they had and see if it works. Hope that helps!

Hi. Thanks. I have now tried removing the contact completely then adding it again (along with the tones) but this has made no difference. The baffling thing is, in the contact info i am told the said tone has been selected, it just isn't sounding when the contact messages/calls me.

Sorry to hear that your contact's text tone is still not working. You might have done this before, but you could attempt to power down the phone via the power button and turn it back on again. Hope that resolves the issue.

I tried that first. I have now assigned a new tone to the contact but am still being alerted by the default.

Sorry if you have tried this one...

Occasionally I will end up with multiple contacts with the same number. Sometimes it's because of a Facebook contact and a normal one being both in my list. If I change the ring tone for one, but don't realize there is another contact for that number, then I get the default tones.

Have you looked carefully through your complete contact listing to ensure you do not have a duplicate or overlapping contact?

Yes, definitely no duplicate contacts. I have not long ago given my list a right good clear out.

Hmm, this is a tricky one.
Have you tried switching Apple ID's? Sometimes contacts can become duplicated if you have more than one Apple ID, or mail account set up, and you add a contact on that Apple ID rather than your default one.

Perhaps you have duplicate contacts that don't show up from other acounts on your phone?
Have you checked under groups on the contacts screen to see what other accounts you have set up and if they are ticked of so they show up?
I had a period where my phone for some odd reason decided to save new contacts to my google acount, and since that acount wasn't ticked of in groups, the new contacts didn't show up in my contacts list after I had saved them... I almost went mad before I figured it out! ;)
Might that be what's happening here? Just a thought

I only have one Apple ID and only one mail account, so nothing else to switch to.

Ok. Sure? If you e.g. use gmail, contacts for the google account is turned on by default, but the contacts wont show up unless you check of google under groups in contacts.
Just to be sure, see if you have the groups icon at the upper left corner when viewing contacts from the phone app. Or is it the upper right? Can't remember...
But if you don't have the group icon, then that solution is out of the question for you :)
