No sound after start-up chime on iPhone 14.

Hello all: I turned on my phone, heard the start up chime and didn't get back to my phone for a few minutes. When I pressed the side unlock button, nothing happened. No Siri either. Tripple-clicked side button with no voiceover coming on. Even tried the shut-down with volume up volume down and then holding side button. Not sure if the shutdown screen came up but double-tapped near the top corner where shutdown usually is. Then tried turning phone back on with side button with no sppeech or Siri. I guess tomorrow will be a trip to the Verizon Store. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance!

To rule out the obvious, have you tried charging the phone to make sure the battery didn't go dead? If possible, you may want to try a different power adapter, cable, or outlet, as a failure of one of these could prevent your phone from charging.

Once you've ruled out a dead battery or charging failure, my advice would be to attempt to see if your phone has started at all, or if it got stuck somewhere in that process following the initial startup chime. What happens when you connect the charger or flick the mute switch down? My guess is that if you feel the expected sensations for those actions, the phone is on, whereas if nothing appears to happen, the phone has likely failed to start. If you have access to another mobile device, you could use a tool like Seeing AI or Be My Eyes to get a sense of what's on your phone's screen, which can help aid in the diagnosis of the problem.

Another thing to try is to connect it to a computer and see what kind of response you get. If you're prompted by the computer to unlock your phone, it is likely on, however if the phone isn't acknowledged or you get an error that it must be restored, you must put it into Recovery mode, restore it to factory settings, and restore your data from a backup.

Hi Gail,

First, do you feel any haptic vibration when you attempt to power on your 14? If so, it could be that the volume for your device has been inadvertently turned all the way down.

Alternatively, if you have any earbuds laying around, try connecting them to your device, and see if you have sound.

If so, then I am sticking with my previous thought; that your base volume is all the way down. If not, then it may be time to visit the Apple Store.

HTH. 😅

Tyler and Brian: Thanks so much for your suggestions. I will connect the phone to the computer and see what happens. Also I will try another charger too. I know the phone comes on and so I try the shut down procedure and double-tap on the place where power off should be with no results. I will visit Verizon tomorrow, if your suggestions do not seem to work. Thanks again, though! This community is amazing!

Shame Apple did not make all of their iPhones have this feature. Seems like your example is a perfect use case of how it is beneficial to the blind community.

Best of luck with your 14.

Hello all: When I got to work, I asked a sighted person if my phone was able to be shut down. She shut it down, heard that wonderful chime, waited a few minutes, re-started, and voiceover came on, I had Siri, and best of all won't have to go to the Verizon Store today. Again, thank you Applevis community for all your help and suggestions!

Did she or he tell you what was wrong?

The only thing I can come up with that was wrong was there was no voiceover, Siri, or sounds. I did have haptics, though. And the reason I needed sighted assistance to shut down the phone was that no voiceover jestures worked. It's good to be back up and running. I didn't realize how much I used this phone until I could not. Fortunately, I had a talking clock so I was able to set an alarm and get to work on time!

This has not been discussed on AppleVis in quite a while, but it kind of sounds like the old Lightning Port bug, where if you unplug something from your iPhone, all sound cuts out, because your device thinks a pair of wired earbuds are connected.

The work-arounds are to either reboot your iPhone, which you did with sighted assistance, or to connect a pair of earbuds (wired or wireless) to your device.

Either way, good on you for getting it resolved. 😃

Is the phantom wired earbud bug still a thing? I last experienced that on my iPhone 6, the last iPhone I owned that had a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack.
