Kindle App Not Working With VoiceOver?

Hi Everyone,

I woke up yesterday to discover that my Kindle App is being strange when Reading a Book Using VoiceOver.

Before Yesterday Morning, I was able to happily read my Books one whole page at a time. Since Yesterday Morning However, VoiceOver is only Reading A Paragraph at A Time, and then I have to Swipe to the Next Paragraph, Which, as I am sure that You Can All Imagine, is rather Annoying to say the least.

Is anyone else having this issue? Or have I accidentally Changed Something Without Realising, and if so, Please tell Me how to Fix it!!!! I Use my Kindle App so much Throughout the Day, and I am Getting more and more frustrated that I Can’T Access it properly…

Thank You:)

Just to bump this thread, I'm also having the text skipping when using a brail display. It seems to skip over a page and land the brail on the last line, even though voiceover reads the page from the top, which makes me wonder if this is a specific kindle issue or the way voiceover and brail are behaving when using kindle. It's so frustrating. I really want to build my brail proficiency and am reading along then, bang, a bunch of text is skipped and I have to pan back through it. Woe is me.

I feel this is an iOS thing, rather than a Kindle thing. Hey Ollie, how is it working for you now with 18.2 RC?

as well as the paragraph pause problem which i find very frustrating i'm also finding that vo sometimes misses out a word or couple of words when continuously reading. It sounds like brian might be right that it's a vo issue rather than kindle but as someone who mainly reads books via kindl
I hope it's resolved soon.

I was hopeful when I saw the Kindle app updated yesterday, but it did not help. I reported this issue more than once to Amazon. I also reported it to Apple. Please, those of you experiencing this, report to Amazon and Apple. The more they hear from us, the more likely they are to do something about it. This issue is extremely frustrating. I read Kindle books every day, but I can't do it now with the app the way it is. Have a good weekend, everyone.

I did have a read this afternoon and it seemed to be behaving. Using 18.2 RC as Brian pointed out. I'm not sure if that means much though. Fingers crossed this is the fix.

Hi,
This has happened on multiple books that have the ability to be read with screenreaders. But what happens to me is when I do a two-finger swipe down to start continuous read (heaven forbid I'd have to turn the pages, lol), it reads some of the book. Then for some inexplicable reason, it will just stop mid book, it's a pain. I've noticed it since iOS 18.

Issue remains in 18.2 re brail skipping. I've emailed apple accessibility and amazon accessibility and ask them both to take a look. I suggest, those affected, do the same:

accessibility@amazon.com

accessibility@apple.com

It's put me off reading.

It also reminds me of the friends episode where Rachel makes dinner but two of the recipe book pages are stuck together, creating a franken-meal. Joey goes back for seconds... I'm not Joey.

I know there's a lot of variables in play here, so I thought I would detail my experience and my various app settings as I suspect some of these may come into play. Note, I'm using iPhone 16 Pro and also latest iPad Mini, both iOS/iPadOS18.1.1. I also have an iPhone SE2, running latest iOS17 and results are the same there as well.
1. If I do a three finger flick left or right, I hear the page turn sound and VoiceOver reads the entire page.
2. If I one-finger swipe left or right, VoiceOver moves to and reads the previous or next paragraph. I actually like this as it makes finding links, or not inadvertently double tapping on links, much easier.
3. Two-finger swipe down starts continuous reading. I hear a slight pause as pages turn, I hear the page turn sound, but I do not hear notable pauses between paragraphs. I should note that I'm using Samantha compact because, well, I'm just used to it. :)
4. I have noticed some weird behavior that sometimes occurs if a notification banner is displayed, or if content is displayed on the dynamic island. What I haven't figured out here is why this sometimes impacts the reading experience and sometimes does not. Changing content on the dynamic island tends to cause me more problems though.
5. In reading settings, font, I have Bookerly selected at a size of 31%. In layout, I have page color as white, update page using system theme off, continuous scrolling says not available, spacing is medium alignment is justified, orientation lock is off. Under themes, "custom save settings as new theme" is selected, but I haven't actually saved it. Under more, here's where things might get interesting. Assistive reader set to off. realtime text highlighting is on. reading ruler is off. reading progress is kind of confusing, I haven't changed it but I'm not really sure what's selected here either. popular highlights is set to on. highlight menu is off. These last two are strange because it normally does show me the highlight menu and I don't think it's ever read popular highlights so it's behaving exactly opposite of how these settings are set, but that's another problem for another day. Visible clock is off. about this book is on. page turn animation is off.

I hope this may be helpful, there are some rather obscure settings here, like page turn animation, and I have no idea whether they do or don't impact the reading experience.

With the new Kindle and iOS updates, nothing has changed. The only way to make the pauses tolerable is to sign out or delete the app and reinstall it. The first book I read is fine; I can handle the pauses. After that, the pauses really become intolerable. The settings make no difference. Reading has become quite unenjoyable, and it is my only go-to entertainment. The way the app is now, I would consider it unusable. I get review copies as documents from some authors. I can read those, but any book I get from the app store is unreadable unless I reinstall the app with each book. Does Amazon care? I don't know. I sure hope everyone who is having trouble reports this so they pay attention. Money is the bottom line, and we don't make them enough money.
