Hello.
I have a lot of blind friends and all of them are using their devices in portrait mode. Just wondering, because many don't like when apps are in landscape mode.
Personally I think that landscape mode works just fine. I am just curious. I seem to be one of few who don't mind landscape mode. Sorry if this is a weird question. :-)
I am currently using landscape mode on Safari on my iPhone.

land mode
Never use it. My phone is lock to avoid it. I prefer phone to be up and on the side. Since I am 100% blind land mode does not work for me. If I was sighted would use it for videos.
...
no need to be religious about it, each mode has its use case. portrait mode is fine for most cases, but if you're viewing a map and you're more interested in east and west in relation to the map center, you'd better off use landscape. you should take most pictures in landscape, and never ever record a video in portrait. can you imagine how your vertical video looks on a big screen? horrible!
in older phones like the 3gs, there was a hardware defect, so a very tiny tilt would kick you into landscape, and only more aggressive tilt would get back to portrait. it was very annoying for even sighted users, but seemed to affect blind users more. many turned on orientation lock and never look back.
newer phones don't have this problem, you need to tilt 30 to 45º to put it into landscape and vise versa, so if you are adventurous, you might want to turn off orientation lock and have a different experience. it won't hurt, i promise.
Land
It do not even use video. I would like to learn to take photos so I can get Bella the cat. I can put her in my twitter. Although she is already there and someone put her on youtube.
my way
I am completely blind and in some apps I prefer landscape mode. Like many games. I think it more comfortable.
Portrait Mode
I use an iPhone. I have it locked in portrait mode. That's the way I hold the phone when I talk on it, and I don't like the automatic switching when the phone is tilted, so it ended up that way. The letters on the screen keyboard are also closer together and faster for typing to me.
* Also, I am totally blind for many years. Before that, I had perfect vision.
I take pictures, usually in portrait mode, of lots of things I want to show friends on social media. I just kind of guess where the top and bottom of the picture will be. It usually works OK.
Funny, I was just thinking of
Funny, I was just thinking of asking this question the other day.
To keep entertained while self-isolating, I've been playing Apple's Texas Hold'em game a lot (it's been my favorite game for a while.) The view is completely different when you flip your phone to landscape, and it provides a bit more info so I usually play that way.
That got me thinking what other apps have a landscape mode and how are they different? Messages and Mail are more like an iPad, with a split screen layout. This is good in some ways, but you obviously can't fit as many threads on the screen at once, so I find myself having to scroll more. I usually stick to portrait mode, but every once in a while will use them in landscape mode. Same with Safari... the interface is a bit different so can take some getting used to, like the toolbar being at the top of the screen. I don't care about the virtual keyboard since I use BSI all the time.
The thing that keeps me from leaving rotation lock off more is the phone switching orientation when I have it in my pocket and need to keep it unlocked, which mostly happens with youtube and I need VO to stay focussed on that little scrubber control to skip back if I miss something. Wish they would just put in some skip back and forward buttons.
Gaming is infinitely better in landscape mode though. I would love a landscape interface for Dice World.
portrait screen orientation for me
hello,
I have an iPad Mini 2. I keep it in portrait because the limoted experience with the touch screen was learned in portrait. I use a bluetooth keyboard, but find I have to use the touch screen in surtain apps.
