I'm Rob. First time posting, but I've bopped in and out from time to time. :) So my query is thus: I am looking at updating to an iPhone X series, but I don't know if I should get the XS or XR. Where am I going with this, considering it's posted in the apps forum? Well, I was curious for those of you who have an iPhone X: Are there any advantages with accessible apps for us that may operate better utilizing the secondary camera (particularly with AR [augmented reality] apps that could aid us as blind people?)

And I'd like to add my own. Is there any increase of accuracy in relation to OCR apps with the better cameras. I have a 6S Plus and an Ipad Pro 9.7 and all these amazing scanning apps like Seeing AI, Envision etc work reasonably well despite my unsteady hands, but I wonder if they might be better with a better camera.
Little or no advantage
I think the dual camera system is really only useful for 1. Telephoto, zoomed in, photos, and 2. Portrait mode. Unless you want to do one of those things, there is no advantage to the second camera.Also the 10R will do portrait mode in software anyway. The one camera on the 10R is identical to the primary one on the 10S. All the OCR apps just use the main camera, Iām pretty sure. And Apple tends to do all their AR demos with iPads, which all have only one camera. So the benefits of the second camera are really dubious.
My unconsidered opinion
Hey Rob,
I commend to you the Daring Fireball review of the iPhoneXS models, in which He discusses at length how great the wide angle camera and sensors are on the new phones. According to His review, the new Cameras, Sensors, chipsets and Software are a significant improvement on anything that has come before. Even the iPhone X.
So if you are wondering whether the Apps that rely on image processing will benefit from these improvements, my ill-considered opinion is you bet!
If an image can be captured more easily, with greater clarity, better light detection and with less interference then it stands to reason that the OCR and Recognition Apps will perform better.
Two major improvements over earlier models are a 30% increase in low light detection (or something to that effect) and a slightly wider wide angle.
For me, low light detection is a common problem for on the fly OCR, so any improvement here will have obvious benefits.
As for whether the two camera system of the iPhone XS will further boost performance over the single lens of the iPhone XR remains to be discovered. I don't currently use any Apps that would benefit from portrait mode, but who knows what exciting opportunities will come with the AR revolution.
Still, when it comes to me actually forking out my own cold hard cash for a new phone, it will probably be the iPhone XR in my shopping bag...
