I'm new here, but I've been following the forum for some time, and I decided to join because I have a serious problem related to my iphone (SE 2022), which was completely frozen.
by frozen i mean black screen, the buttons don't have any feedback (except for the home button) i even asked a friend to call me and the iphone doesn't call and sends to ovoice mail.
What could it be?

Force restart
It sounds like your phone at least has power, so that's a good start. I'd plug it in in case the battery is near dead. I tried to do that, but it didn't work, because the screen doesn't give any kind of life sign as well as the voiceover, the only feedback I have is the click of the home button and nothing else.

Can you get a sighted person to look at it??
Perhaps you've turned voiceover down by mistake, press the up button and see if you hear anything.

Could doing a factory reset work? I have no idea what could be going on though. Did you dropp your phone recently before this happened? Try connecting it to a computer as ll to see if your computer detects the phone.

I have the exact same issue, but I'm using the latest SE 3rd generation. It's happened twice. The last time the battery was at 75 percent and I didn't touch it and a couple hours later it was like that It takes my phone at least 24 hours to come back on and it's like the battery is totally dead. I checked the battery health and it was 100 percent. I've tried all the suggestions mentioned here, except taking it to the Apple store. I wonder if it's something with the latest update? If it does it again, I will take it to the Apple Store. I was glad to see someone else had the same issue. I thought it was maybe the charging case I was using so took it out of that for now.
My thoughts
I am currently running the iPhone SE third generation. I have not had this issue. Here are some suggestions for you
First of all, you have no voice over. What I do for this one is, press and hold the home button, ask Siri what the weather is. Then, release the home button, and press the volume up. Sometimes the ringers get twisted around on these iPhones, and your volume might've simply been dropped down to zero. By asking Siri a longer question, it has to speak longer, therefore giving you an opportunity to really fuss with the volume buttons to to see if that's all it is. I even suggest trying it a second time, just in case Siri timed itself out talking, before you really got a chance to press and hold that volume up button.
Next, you indicated that the screen is black. It might be showing as black, if the screen curtain has been turned on accidentally. You can toggle screen curtain back off, simply by doing a three finger triple tap. Remember, if you haven't first fixed your voiceover issue, executing this action won't help you either way, as you wouldn't receive voiceover feedback, indicating whether or not screen curtain has been activated or deactivated.
Although the suggestion is out of order, try plugging your device into a solid power source, ensuring that cables are in good working order, as sometimes they go bad. If you receive feedback from your device immediately, then you know you have power. If you do not receive feedback immediately, this could be an indicator that the battery is simply depleted, it needs time to charge.
Finally, regarding incoming calls going directly to voicemail, if you have a problem with your volume, you wouldn't even know that the phone call was coming in, unless you use vibration as a part of incoming call notifications. So we need to get voiceover back, before you can really do anything. If all else fails, get a sighted person, and go through the steps with someone actually watching the screen for you. At this point, I don't think you actually have a crucial issue, it's just a matter of good doing some good solid troubleshooting.

Had the same exact problem. Shortly after the phone was updated to iOS 16.
Kind of drove me crazy.
Tried all the different resets.
Tried plugging it in.
Was getting ready to take it to the Apple store the next day decided to let the phone die completely so the home button would not move anymore.
After the phone was completely dead and the home button would not move I then plugged in the phone after a little while the phone came on and I have not had that problem since none of the resets are going to work so try that.

I had this same exact problem. Glad to know it's widespread, although still sorry to those of you out there experiencing it. Well Ithat was like 8 in the evening, my phone was plugged in, and I was using my iPad for a bit. My phone was charging for about an hour I think, although I'm constantly charging it overnight with no difference in it's behavior. I unplugged it, and it wouldn't turn on, the home button still worked so I knew it had power, and my max battery capacity is still at 100. What I left it overnight and then at about 11:00AM the next morning, i could hard reset it, and it took like about 20 seconds for it to come on, but I'd recommend getting sighted assistance if you don't have any usable vision. Here is how you hard reset iphone SE3.
•First, press and quickly release the volume up button.
•Then press and quickly release the volume down button.
•Then press and hold the power button AKA the side button) until the apple logo pops up, this could take a while so you might want to get sighted assistance if you won't be able to see the apple logo pop up.

Here is what worked for me
I had this exact thing happen to me twice. Here is how I fixed it, both times. Sighted assistance is not necessary, but could be useful if this does not work.
1. Quickly press and release the volume up button.
2. Quickly press and release the volume down button.
3. Press and hold the power button, and count to 12. I found that it takes around 12 seconds for the apple logo to actually come up after the hard reset.
This was the method I used both times this happened to my phone. Now, I hard reset every day or so to see if I can avoid this issue. I hope this works for you.

When I do a reset like this, I use the chimes on my computer as a guide while the phone is plugged in.
Obviously, this sort of thing isn't going to work if you don't have a computer.
Do you get chimes on Mac when you do something like this? because this is from a Windows perspective.

It seems to be something with the SE 2 and 3 models as this has happened to me twice as well. The hard reset so far has fixed it. I'm so glad that they changed how to activate SOS because I've set it off sometimes when doing this. The windows chimes for hardware connecting and disconnecting is a good idea! I would of never thought of it, just be careful you don't hold the power button for too long when doing this with the phone connected to the pc as it will put the phone in recovery mode.

From what I've read, I'm not the only one with this problem, and the fact that some users have said it's happened to them more than once worries me.
Could it be a hardware compatibility issue?
Anyway, what I did was wait for the iphone battery to drain completely and I put it on charge and it's already working.

It might possibly be hardware, I mean, i've never had this problem on my phones or heard of it happening to other users who own a moddle that isn't the s e series. This is really odd though. Harware is the only plausible explanation really. I mean if it were software, all iphone moddles would be experiencing this regardless if it was a s e or no, but it only seems to be happening to the s e series... this is really strange.

I am in agreement here. I am definitely not a technically trained person, but given the content of this thread, I am inclined to lean toward the fact that it just might be a hardware issue here.

Hello, have experienced this black screen/active home button haptics and nothing else issue twice already on a March 2022 SE 3 128 GB. Never been dropped or anything. Never seen anything like this on any of the iPhones I owned, starting with iPhone 5S. This SE 2022 would just randomly go black/blank screen and would not react to anything, but would give a haptic feedback of the home button, that's it. Does not react to neither wireless nor wired charging, no sounds, no image, nothing. Both times solved this problem by restarting with Vol + Vol - Power, it came back to life normally. This has happened twice in 2 months, seems to happen every 3 weeks. Don't know if it's timed or anything. Once in 3 weeks is not a broken iPhone, I don't think I can even submit it on warranty, they will just restart it and tell me it's fine. But something is definitely wrong with this initial batch from March 2022, I think. Seems like a hardware issue to me, because my other iPhones running the same latest iOS 16 version don't do that.

Factory reset doesn't affect hardware, unfortunately. Could maybe try that though, see if it works because I'm pretty sure it's worked before, hopefully the hardware suggestion is wrong and iphone life can return to normal.

Hey all, I actually previously responded on this thread, indicating my thoughts might be hardware related, for the original poster. However, and re-examining this thread, it just occurred to me that I'm actually having the same problems. I am currently running an iPhone SE third generation. I have had several times, seven or eight, where the phone will simply stop. No voice, no volume adjustment noises, when the buttons are pushed, the haptics button seems to work when I press the home button so I can tell the phone is still active. No sounds come out of it, no notifications pop audibly, my phone simply goes completely unresponsive, except the home button. Along with others, the only way I have found to fix this is to do a soft reset. This seems to straighten it out for quite a while, and perform as if the problem never existed to begin with. I am in agreement with others. Contacting Apple, with the device at the age that it is, and of course because I don't have AppleCare, would be a waste of time for everyone. I just simply reboot, and keep going forward. Hopefully whatever the issues is resolved. Quite annoying. Never had on reliability issues with Apple products like I have with this SE, and no explanation as to why the phone actually goes dark , and simply quits responding.

If so many people are having the same issue, it maybe is not hardware-related, but rather a software bug. Maybe the A15 CPU in the SE 2022 is a low-bin part, has faulty transistors which are disabled and that's why it got into the SE, but I think CPUs etc. are tested well. Also soldering does not seem to be the case, otherwise there would be several random symptoms, not one exact symptom for a great number of users. Probably a firmware bug specific to the SE 2022, hopefully it will be fixed in a future iOS update if we report it to Apple so that they know about the issue. My 12 does not have this problem neither 8 Plus nor any other iPhones I had.

But if it was a software or fermware bug, wouldn't it affect every single moddle, not just the s e? I mean fermware would indicate this would affect all phones right? Not just the s e as we're seeing so... how could it be fermware, if only the s e moddles are beeing affected?

Actually, no. For example, I also use 8 Plus daily. It does not exhibit this black screen of death issue, never has and is rock solid still, after 5 years of daily use. However, after updating from iOS 15 to iOS 16 it lost the ability to remember the back tap feature settings after restarting or a software update. So if I turn it off, turn in back on, I have to turn off the back tap option for double tap and triple tap and then enable it again, and it will only remember this setting until the phone reboots. The SE 3 does not have this issue neither does my 12, and the 8 Plus did not have it with any of the previous iOS versions. Apple doesn't seem to be aware of this or willing to fix it. so this is a small issue along with a few others (related to notification sounds) specific to the 8 Plus only. As far as this SE 3 bug, it could be triggered by the Nvme SSD in it, maybe it has a firmware bug and locks on you after a certain period, needs a firmware update for this specific SSD model. Or it could be something with the A15 CPU batch, there are various revisions, some of which might lock up, could also be fixed with a FW update. There are dozens of things which could go wrong in a specific model iPhone.

There have been ios releases in the past that bring issues for only certain phone models. For example, last year there was somehow an issue, brought with iPadOS 15.5, that caused the iPad Mini 6 to have trouble recognizing USB accessories (And chargers!) that were inserted into the charger port. It was fixed in iPadOS 15.6. And in the beginning stages of iOS 16 (i.e between 16.0 and 16.1) there was many issues that was exclusive to iphone 14 and iphone 14 Pro models.

So, yesterday the situation described in the initial post happened again. Black screen, no feedback, notifications, calls, voice over, forced restart doesn't work...
I updated the iphone last week to the latest version of IOS.
I still suspect that my hardware incompatibility theory is the cause of the problem.
If so, honestly, I don't understand why apple, which has its own software and hardware, doesn't correctly optimize them for its various models.
Now I have to wait for the battery to reach 0...

This is been happening since February only happened twice or maybe three or four times

How are even tried contacting Apple to try and get the thing, my mum to disable was asleep, and Apple needs a parent/guardian because I’m under 18.
And, I even plugged it into my M1 MacBook Air to see if it would be discovered by iTunes, nope. Tried to put it into recovery mode. Nope. This is my mums iPhone, I’ve done nothing. I haven’t broken it or anything

We have the same iPhone model, which suggests that the problem is related to our model. In my case, waiting for the battery to drain completely and then charging it solves the problem.

Well, it really is complicated. One option could be to switch to a new device, such as the SE 2020/12 or the 13 mini/14. Another solution would be to buy a device that can measure and store this information so there is no risk of data loss.
After reading my last post, I was thinking and I suppose that the brightness intensity or screen curtain don't make a difference, since after charging it and waking it up in the next morning, I was bombarded with notifications from the previous day, which indicates that it enters some kind of vegetative state in which it doesn't receive any information.

SE III Freeze - My Experience/Recommendation
I have had the same situation occur with my SE III since I got it about 4 months ago. It becomes totally unresponsive, toggling the "mute" switch on the left upper side does not cause any vibration, and although the Home Button is clickable, it does not result in any sounds or half ticks. Every time this has happened my battery has been plentifully charged, and what I've noticed is that it usually happens while the phone is locked as opposed to when I'm actively using it. It's very disconcerting when you pick up the phone and hit the Home or Side Button and you hear nothing, and the first couple times it happened to me were very unsettling.
The first time it happened I called Apple Disability about it and after they went through the standard questions and troubleshooting steps with me, ultimately they had me perform the Forced Restart maneuver. I've used that maneuver every time this freeze thing has occurred since and it works well. The trick with the Forced Restart for a blind user is to 1) hit the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons one after the other in as rapid a succession as possible and then 2) immediately pressing and holding the Side Button. Apple Disability told me I need to hold the Side Button for a full 30 seconds since I can't see the Apple® logo when it appears on the screen, although they added that the logo usually shows up well before 30 seconds have elapsed. After waiting a full 30 seconds and then releasing the Side Button, it can take up to a minute before you hear that tone it makes before Alex (or whoever your selected voice is) starts talking and asks for your Pass Code. I have had good luck with the Forced Restart maneuver when these mysterious freezes have happened. I'd estimate it has happened to me maybe 10-12 times since April when I got my phone. It's aggravating, yes, but it is survivable, and I personally would not go through the full Wipe/Reset ritual except as a very last resort. I've also made a habit of powering down my phone once a day and then powering it back up; something I was not doing up to that point. I had been leaving my phone on non-stop since I got it. I have noticed that since I started powering my phone off once a day or so, I have not had a recurrence of the freeze situation. It may be coincidence, and I may have just jinxed myself, but so far that seems to have dealt with this pesky but annoying problem. I hope this is helpful to other blind iPhone SE III users.

So, I have an iPhone SE 2nd Gen, and I can confirm that this happens now and again for me. While frustrating, it seems like some of you guys have found work-arounds. Restarting the device using the volume and side button combination is definitely one way. And I believe I read above in one of the replies that it could be a volume issue (i.e. VoiceOver volume set to 0).
I believe as many of you do, that this is a hardware issue. The problem is oddly enough with the charging port/headphone jack. Before I had my SE model, I was rocking an iPhone 8. It was the first iPhone I personally ever owned that replaced the 3.5mm head phone jack with the "new and improved" (see: Sarcasm) lightning port. The point being that I had this same issue with my dearly departed iP8. What I believe is happening is that these particular phones are getting confused whenever the charging cord is plugged in too long. Or if someone is switching a lot between a wired headset and the speaker built into the iPhone. Regardless, the port is acting as if a headset is plugged in, and thus you are getting no audio feedback, but you "are" getting haptic feedback when pressing the "Home" button. If you have a bluetooth audio device, then sometimes you can get around this by paring/unparing it to your iPhone. Again your mileage may vary. 😖
Anyways, not much you can do save for upgrading to a newer iPhone model.
Personally I am hopeful for the iPhone 15 in the near future. 😅
Midnight SE2022 128GB report
Haven't been experiencing this issue in the recent months on my Midnight SE2022 128GB ever since I started using it with an eSIM. Also maybe because it's always updated to the latest FW, now at iOS 16.6, and one of the updates may have included a fix. Ever since I switched to eSIM have not seen it freeze a single time. That being said, it's my backup and not primary phone, but it's always online.

Brian I think you may be on to something, maybe it's not frozen at all but it could think a device is plugged in or turned on such as a headset.
I th9ink I have had the same issue.
I've never reset for it, just grabbed my bluetooth earbuds or whatever was handy and turned them on. Often it seems that somehow the volume on the phone is getting turned all the way down when on speaker, or the phone thinks it is connected to something that isn't there. Usually switching to bleutooth and back will get it going again.

It seems that Apple hasn't resolved it yet; let's hope that with iOS 17, things will be fixed.

Wouldn’t taking it to Apple Store help prove it’s an issue
If it’s an actual issue that multiple people are going through, it’s probably more important to take it to Apple and show them. The only way they’re likely to notice it and fix it is by reporting it directly to them. The geniuses need to be able to see it, and then record it. Even if it’s a quick fix, they will report that voiceover users are reporting loss of functionality, and the more people that do it, the engineers are going to look at it, and say, maybe it’s something to actually fix.

It has happened to me twice, just seconds after making a payment with my Revolut card via the app in my iPhone SE 2022.
The first time I waited for the battery to drain (home button no longer responsive) so I could restart it. The second, minutes ago, was the up down power button sequence.
If any of u guys had this issue after payments it could be hackers or scammers, or who knows
