Hi,
I just have a question. My sister was talking to me earlier and she said that an older person that she works with has this thing on her phone will read her messages aloud. I assumed that it was Siri. I told her mine did that too, but she was telling me that it is describing the pictures and it will say things like your daughter sent an image of a woman with long finger nails or your family member in the group chat said hello to so and so. so it will tell you like who’s being responded to in the group chat and what it says and it will describe photos. I thought it was an AirPod thing because I see online when I Google it that they were saying that with AirPods, it will describe images but whether I’m on the AirPods or not on the AirPods whenever I receive a message it just says Sarah sent a photo I’ll get a group message and it will just read all of the group names and then it will say the message so it doesn’t say that it specifically to any person I was wondering what this is. I have looked everywhere and cannot figure out what she’s doing on her phone, I asked if it was an iPhone because I thought for sure it wasn’t but she said that it is an iPhone and it does say the stuff out loud any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

What model iPhone?
There is a possibility, that your friend is using one of the later model iPhones that is utilizing the Apple Intelligence feature, to have images auto described as they are received. I cannot confirm this, however, as I am using an older model iPhone. 🤷🏽♂️
apple inteligence
That is what i thought as well and was the first thing i mentioned to her but she said it was not a new iphone.
At least a 15 pro?
If she at least has a 15 pro, then she gets apple intelligence. But if she has something like a 15 standard, or older model, then no she won't have apple intelligence. In that case, I am not quite sure what application or service she is using to get pictures auto described to her.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
I've seen this
I was going to some place, suddenly, the cab driver's iPhone starts announcing, in some whatsapp group, who wished them happy birthday etc in so and so group.
I thought it must be an Apple Car Play feature.
If you connect an Android phone to some specific Bluetooth headphones, Google assistant will also start announcing each notification as it comes. It sounds amazing, but, I got annoyed of it real quick once it started speaking between my Audio books/music listening.
Hmmm, very interesting. I…
Hmmm, very interesting. I have not seen this but it does make me wonder if it could be an Apple intelligence thing. A feature of Car Play as mentioned above also makes sense. All the best in figuring this one out. :)
Live Recognition
Hi. I haven't seen this for myself but it could be live recognition which came out with the release of IOS 18. Idk just a thought.
Siri announce notifications
Hi all,
The feature you're talking about is announce Siri notifications. A link on how to enable it is here.
https://www.xda-developers.com/how-enable-notification-announcements-ios/
Unbelievably, the apple support page doesn't give accurate information on how to enable this feature. It says you need to go into Siri under settings, and you don't, you actually have to go into accessibility, and there is a Siri setting under that. On my phone it's not under Siri in settings, it's under accessibility. I'm on iOS 18.1.1.
I think we’re over analyzing this…
It sounds like it’s just voiceover image recognition. Voiceover describes the images on screen whether you’re scrolling through Facebook, photos app, etc., etc. It has nothing to do with Apple Intelligence and Apple has had this feature for a very long time. This feature even works when you’re utilizing the camera. While you point your phone while camera app is open it’ll describe what’s in the frame. It’s not as cool as guided frame like on the Google phones, but that’s also been around for a while.
Tara
Yes, it is in accessibility and siri but is for speakers. If you use speakers to play music and you have VO coming out from phone, the notification will come up from the music speakers instead the phone.
re Holger and Stephen
Didn't realise it was just for external speakers. The option in accessibility talks about my device's speakers, but I thought that was the speaker on my iPhone. And Stephen, maybe you're right, we're overanalysing, but what SeasonKing says doesn't sound like your average VoiceOver describing things like you pointing your phone at things etc.. It sounds like this Siri thing. They mention Apple's Car Play and a taxi driver was using it.
This was mentioned in the latest Apple Crunch
I believe Thomas talked about this in the latest Apple Crunch. Check out that podcast.
Got To Hear This Once...
I actually got to hear this once in a sister's car. She was driving me back from our parents' house, and had the radio on. During the program Siri came through the car speaker and began reading something out. I haven't yet had a chance to listen to the latest episode of Apple Crunch, but I know what you're talking about. Siri also seems to have its own notification chime now.
