iOS12 feature request, why not start now

iOS and iPadOS

Hi all.

I do not know if my request is of great use, but I can see iOS12 approaching, and I was thinking about a few important features , whose accessibility has deteriorated since iOS11 and it would be important to report to Apple. I do not have the courage to register
as betatester, but I tell myself that this list of features, which is not exhaustive and could be completed by everyone, would be
good to transmit to whom of right.

What worked under iOS10.

When a contact had several numbers in their card, VoiceOver used to tell us which of these numbers called us or was called, this is not the case anymore.

When scheduling an appointment with Siri by saying, whith, plus, the name of a contact, this contact is added as a guest to this appointment,
but it is no longer stated by VoiceOver when viewing the calendar.

When one is positioned on an adjustable value, the rotor does not position itself automatically on adjusting the value.

Feature request.

When the Braille keyboard is used in Abbreviated mode, misspelled words are not spoken by VoiceOver.

Why would not the virtual Braille keyboard take into account the character strings used as abbreviations in text replacement?

well folks, that's all for now. Hope you find this useful.
Best,
JPR

One accessibility-related feature I'd like to see, is for OCR. in the Notes app, similar to what apps like Seeing Ai. do. You can scan docs, but as of right now, Ocr. isn't possible.

Would love to be able to forward an email as message to someone or message as an email.

By TJT 2001 on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

You can forward messages as emails. One of the rotor options on a message is "copy". I think that it would probably be possible that you can then paste the content of the message as an email.

Let’s say for example my language is set to Spanish on my phone I would like the ability to dictate in English instead of using Google translator to copy and paste what I wrote

By jprykiel on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

All this is good, but I think focus should be made on what worked well under iOS10 and was broken with iOS11. What do you say betatesters?

Best,

JP

Hey Angel.
You can already do so by adding keyboards.
Settings/general/keyboards. Here you can add any keyboard you want, and switch between them by clicking the icon on the down left corner of the screen when in a text field, and this will also affect dictation.
Hope this helped.
Cheers,
JP

Thank you for your help. It worked I did it.

The point that we will not need to do so. Why just not having it similar to share something you get the choice of sharing it as email, message, and so. Copy and paste is a pain.

Long story short, I notice my new iphone using haptick feedback more. As in, if i like a facebook post, it does it. If this were expanded, I would be happy. For instance, if I sent a message or an email, i'm in a loud place, without holding the phone to my ear or a headset, it would be great to get the quick notification. I got the idea from a game i'm playing which uses it. My old iphone six plus didn't do that. It would also be great to have it do that when a phone is turning on, or updated. I don't know how logical that last suggestion is. Please remember this isn't vibration.

By JeffB on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

I think it would be nice if we could Customize Voiceover sounds meaning that we could turn off the swipping sound but keep other sounds on. Perhaps you don't likke the sound of web pages loading, or folders opening and closing but want to keep others on. That is my suggestion for IOS 12.

Those features are all great, but I would like to see ferther enhancements on VO. the bugs from iOS 10/11 that have been discovered needs to be fix. I've been a public beta tester since iOS 9, and I will probably be returning to beta test iOS 12. I will especially enjoy using the new voice memos, which I've been waiting for in quite a long time. anyways, let's hope the enhancements for VO get's addressed in this update both throughout the beta cycle and throughout the final release.

I think my question might've already been answered in a previous comment to this thread. But I'd like to see the ability to have an on-screen keyboard appear when logging into websites such as AppleVis and my journal. I'm rather new to the iPhone though and haven't yet checked everything out, so this might already be possible. I just added somebody to my Contacts, and the on-screen keyboard appeared. Or at least one of them did. So I was able to flick through and double-tap on each letter and number to add his information. While this method has worked just fine for me thus far, it is a bit cumbersome.

We can open apps using Siri, but not close them. Also, in an update in the past, we could do a mass deletion of eMails from within the inbox. That very useful ability has been removed. I do not mean deleting them 1 by 1. I mean that we could use the edit button, go to the bottom of the screen and use a "delete all" button. Now, either the button is dimmed or it is not even there. I would also like Siri to become more functional. Using it as a fun little feature is OK, but if it were more like our Amazon devices to perform tasks and get info quickly, I would use it much more than I now do.

By TJT 2001 on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

To see an on-screen text field in Safari:

Open the desired webpage.

Flick right until you reach the edit field. VoiceOver should announce the label of the field, then say "text field" or "search field". If VoiceOver does not say "text field" or "search field", you are not on an edit field, so you will need to continue flicking.

When you are on an edit field, double tap.

If you find the on-screen keyboard too cumbersome, remember that you can also use dictation, handwriting input or braille screen input.

By Bingo Little on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

I would love it if dictation were accurate again. It really is not very good now. I've noticed others say the same thing. It has a deleterious effect on Siri, but also with Just Press Record the relatively inaccurate speech recognition depreciates the quality of the transcript of a recording. I seem to remember its having been so much better in the past, but whether that was under IOS 10 or IOS 9 I can't remember.

My Guess is that too many people are using it now. Their servers are overflowed.

You already have this Ekaj. It is called form control and you can reach it with Voceover's rotor. Look for rotor settings in settings/general/accessibility/voiceover, and check if form control is checked.
If it is, you will have this option in Safari or any other web browser you might use.

1. Since iOS 9 or may be older, I face a problem that voiceover keeps restarting when typing using a bluetooth keyboard. I notice that the screen is keeping dimming and undimming many times while typing. (note that I keep the screen dimmed in my normal usage).
I was facing it in google docs on iOS 9 and face it very much when using Pages on iOS 11. I notice it also happens a lot when I use Siri voice instead of Alex in navigating a book on iBooks.
It's not a good thing to stop talking very much and keep repeating sentences.
2. I need to focus about Siri's problem with voice recognition. It gets my words wrong in a high rate.
3. I'm currently using iPad Pro 10.5" . Voiceover gets stuck or lags sometimes when I open the share menu from apps like adobe acrobat reader, or another.
When I open the share menu, It stops speaking. I try to move my finger across the screen ,but it gives me no feedback . I have to wait a while till it speaks another sentence and gets silent again. I didn't try to stop voiceover and open it again with accessibility shortcut. But I solve that problem by closing the app from task manager and reopen the app and retry to share my file.
I was checking from time to time that I don't try to share any file while many apps runs on the same time ,but it gets stuck despite making sure that only 4 apps appears on the task manager. So I think it's a software problem.

Thank you so much for your concern. :)

I don't know about any of you, but I keep my brightness at zero pretty much all the time to save my battery. Then I'm with someone and they're trying to help me find my Uber, and it's a pain to go into settings and adjust the brightness. I'd love to be able to do this with a single gesture.

By Ekaj on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

I keep my iPhone's screen at 0% as well, but I'm the only one using it unless someone helps me with something on there. I think this will be the case in a few days. Anyway, I've noticed that whenever I power my phone up or when I turn VoiceOver off and back on again for whatever reason, the Screen Curtain is automatically turned on. I think Apple should bring this behavior to the Mac. Whenever one of my tutors is here, we like to listen to stuff on YouTube and do other things on my Mac. He is fully sighted, and often times I have to turn up the screen before he gets here. Sometimes he does it himself though, as I have told him the shortcuts for this and toggling on/off both VO and Chromevox.

By Mohamed Fayed on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

A gesture of three finger three taps toggles screen curtain on and off.
This gesture also works on Mac OS when trackpad commander is on.
This feature allows you to control brightness of your device as high as you want ,so that sighted people could see the content of your screen. When you turn screen curtain on, the screen's brightness will get to 0%. Turning the screen on will get the brightness to the specified level.
to turn on trackpad commander :
VO+rotate two fingers right

Hope that helps. :) I run Mac OS 10.13 and I tried it also on 10.12, iOS 11.4

By jprykiel on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

Hi. I had always been told that screen curtain and screen brightness were two different things. For example, having screen curtain on does not affect your battery life,, when diminishing screen brightness does, so I was told. Can someone confirm this?
Best,
JPR

By kool_turk on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

Screen brightness in ios can also be adjusted through the control centre.

That is how I do it because it's quicker than looking for it in the settings.

By Bingo Little on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

I have noticed a significant increase in battery life with screen curtain on. I haven't done any scientific or quasi-scientific experiment to verify this, but on each and every iPhone I've had since 2010 I've noticed it. It would seem logical to me that screen curtain on increases battery life. I thought about the setting brightness to 0 idea, but on the occasions where a sighted person needs to see your phone (airline boarding passes is the example I can think of immediately, and also mobile train tickets) there isn't really the time to go fiddling about with the control centre while other people are waiting in the queue behind you.

By Justin on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

Hi,
In reguards to screen brightness, if you've got the iPhone X with the OLED display, if a spot is black on the screen, it's not even lit from within, as each pixel is basically it's own light. So, for instance if screen curtain is enabled, the screen isn't really drawing power, thus increasing battery runtime, whereas on older devices with LCD displays, the backlight is still on, but the screen is a lot dimmer, not sure if i'm explaining it right, but it'll have to do.

I would like to have the ability to control the volume of VoiceOver sounds such as when I type on the keyboard. Curretnly in a loud environment I cannot always hear the sound that verifies that I typed the intended letter.

Similarly when on the login screen typing in my password, when I touch, for example, the "1" and double tap the "1" in order to enter the number, VoiceOver says "A B C" while the click sound is happening, so sometimes I do not hear the click indicating that I successfully typed the number.

I use a bluetooth keyboard and VoiceOver with the iOS notes apps to take notes.

When I try to use Voiceover to read back the memo by hitting the up/down arrow keys with QuickNav off, VoiceOver oftens reads partial lines and partial words, skips lines, etc. This makes it very difficult to easily verify what I've written. None of my Windows screen readers work this way so I'm sure voiceOver could do better here. This is unacceptable!

I've also tried having Quick Nav on using navigation by lines. This works considerably better with VoiceOver but still can often skip lines. Why is reading with VoiceOver so difficult? This shouldn't be. It happens in all apps.

I am amazed that, when in the iOS Mail app, all of the folders and sub folders for a particular account are
always expanded. In most e-mail programs one can expand or collapse folders and sub folders as desired and one doesn't have to see all folders and sub folders.

Especially with the way people are using e-mail programs these days and may have lots and lots of folders and sub folders to sort items, it is important to be able to navigate through these folders and sub folders efficiently. Thus I think, as with most other e-mail programs, we should have the ability to expand or collapse particular folders and sub folders.

This isn't exactly an accessibility bug, but in the spirit of "universal design" I believe having this feature would not only make it much easier for blind folks to sort through a long list of folders and sub folders, but it would also make it easier for sighted folks. Its about time folks should be able to do this as they can with other e-mail clients.

--Pete

By peter on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

Agreed with the previous comments. There should definitely be a way of deleting all mail in a folder without having to highlight every item. People's e-mail folders can get pretty full these days and this is a necessary efficiency tool for anyone.

Hi Pete.
you must be using standard typing style. May I suggest you try touch typing instead. Not direct touch typing which Requires an enormous amount of self-confidence,, and to assume that spellchecker is always right LOL.
anyway, go to settings/General/accessibility/voice-over, find and click on typing style, and click on touch typing. When touch typing is engaged, letters are entered as soon as you release them. it will disconcert you to start with, but with a bit of practice, I find it much much quicker.
you can also enable Typing style in the rotor, which allows you to change your typing style on the fly.
Cheers,
JPR

This is probably wishful thinking but it would be nice if Apple would create a jesture for closing all currently open apps and not just one at a time.

By peter on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

Yes, I recently switched from using standard typing to touch typing. I was wary of using the touch typing for a long time but now find it very convenient, efficient, and easy to use.

Interestingly, what got me to switch was trying out the new Flicktype app. There is a mode in FlickType for typing custom words that uses touch typing. That gave me the positive feedback to try touch typing in the standard iOS keyboard and I found it works well.

Thanks for the tip.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I like things in order and things left where I put them , so I use the reset home screen layout option pretty often , but when I do this the folders of apps that I created have all been messed up again. It seems like we cannot have both, and being blind I really do appreciate keeping things exactly where I put them but in order as well . That’s my little rant for today, I would just like to see this fixed in I was 12 maybe an option to reset all app placement settings or an option to reset user define placements .

By tunmi13 on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

Screen brightness is part of the whole entire iOS system. Screen curtain is a VoiceOver thing.
The brighter the screen is, also known as, the higher the brightness on your device, the more your battery will drain quickly.
I've found that if I put my brightness up to at least 50, I only get about an hour of battery. When I at , I get at least 4 hours without lower power mode, and about 8 with low power mode enabled.

By Siobhan on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 12:22

I agree with a comment, they wanted louder sounds. I miss the old clicks that everyone knew someone was using the phone. Hope they either bring them back, let us pick, or options to make sounds like that louder.

By tunmi13 on Friday, July 27, 2018 - 12:22

I think the mac VoiceOver sound scheme should replace the current one. Plus they are much louder and have so much detail as to what they do.
Also, I feel powering on the device needs just a bit of work. A startup sound would be cool.
But, unfortunately, some of these features may have to wait till iOS 13, since Apple according to Mac Rumors is trying to fix bugs from iOS 11.
