iOS 9.Two-Finger Double Tap Only Turns Music On and Off

Prior to iOS 9, I was able to start and stop speech on podcasts and books with a two-finger double tap. With iOS 9, a two-finger double tap won't start/stop speech on podcasts and books but instead turns music on and off. Similar issue when I have ear buds plugged in. The ear bud volume switches work fine but the earbud's on/off switch won't start/stop speech on podcasts or books. Instead, it turns music on and off. That means that when the phone goes on auto-lock, I have to turn the phone back on, find the pause/play button and double-tap it. Was so much quicker and easier with the two-finger double tap. I mentioned this to Apple Accessibility. Have other encountered this issue?

When I have a podcast or book going, a two finger double tap will start whatever is playing. Running iOS 9.1 on a 6S.

hi, nope, haven't seen that on either my iPhone 6 or iPad mini. not sure why you're seeing those problems. perhaps a fresh install of the OS is in order? this is the problem sometimes. though i upgraded, i've not seen these problems. but sometimes, when you upgrade an OS, things go wrong. so perhaps that's what's happened in your case?
who knows. but you're certainly one of a few to have it, from what i've seen so far.
good luck with it.

Yes, especially in the Downcast app. A Two finger double tap used to turn on and off the podcast. Now it turns off the podcast and starts music.

I think this is a Downcast bug rather than an iOS one, as I have only seen it with that app. In addition to the issue you describe, when this is happening, the podcast artwork and player controls do not appear on the lock screen.
It's intermittent though, not all the time, so a difficult bug to easily reproduce.
