Hello all,
IOS 8.1 has my iphone 5c nearly unsdeable. this is my first post here, and I'm a 5c user for only a few months. I'd like to know if there are simple instructions to revert to a former IOS somewhere around here.
Also, I have one item of note... Calling Apple to inquire about ATV inventory at my local Apple store, I was told "without a paid for order, no inventory info could be released" HUH? Buy of it first or no info?" That's the worst business practice I've ever encountered. Is this the Apple norm for all of it's equipment inquires? Or did I simply get a newbie on the line that day?

can't role back
Hi, you can't go back to a previous version of ios. Apple stopped signing ios seven about a week or so after ips eight was released.
...can't roll back... How about relaoding a pre..
Well, then, how about reloading a previously backed up condition. I'm pretty sure I backed up my c onto a personal confuser via itunes at some p[oint. What about going that route? is it do-able? How?
BAckups
You can't do it from a backup either. The backups in ITunes doesn't even backup the OS. In fact, when you try to restore from a backup, ITunes will go get the newest IOS version your phone supports. In this case, 8.1.
More about backups
Hi. Backups only store apps, music, contacts and other data on your iPhone. The backup does not store the iOS. Also, you can not restore a phone running iOS 7 from a backup that was made on iOS 8. To restore from a backup the device needs to be running the same or higher iOS then the one the backup was made on.
Just some food for thought
Hi.
Have you tried to do a clean install of the OS? That is, back up your phone, then just do a clean install of iOS and restore your data?
maybe...
Hi there, Jim,
It's true, you can not downgrade to ios 7 cause in the final step apple will not validate your installation, but, I'm so curious about... what kind of issues are you experiencing to say that your iPhone is "nearly unsdeable"? I tested ios 8.02 in an iphone 5 without major issues, and now, with ios 8.1 I know about people using it on an iPhone 4s, and they seem happy with it. Maybe something is wrong with your device or, most probably, your software...
We could help you if you give us more information...
why
Why do you want to downgrade? In my opinion iOS 8.0 was not very good, but as a iPhone 4s user I am happy with 8.1
re WAHT' ISSUES ARE YOU EXP' ?
IN ANOTHER POST HERE THERE IS A LIST OF ISSUES BEING NOTICED WITH THE RELEASE OF ios 8/8.1 called something like Accessibility issues with ios 8... I think.
I do not employ Braile art all. Apart from that, nearly all os those items listed in that post are mine too.
Double characters when I use my only bluetooth keyboard in whatever app. VO does not read all of the active associated text on the screen as it did before the upgrade. Notifications are not announced as before, if at all, when a call comes in, or a text.
here is a list of what I was going to add to the comments on that post which had over 300 commenets on it already.
My issues with IOS 8.112B411
Voice over doesnāt read the screens information completely as it once did. It forces you to either drag your finger around to find more text or buttons. If you are lucky enough to find the associated text you have to be on it just so or it will not read it to you.
Example: Settings>General>updates, here VO says only Update, it does not say the text below which on my iphone 5c w/IOS 8.1 also says in text below Your software is up to dateā¦ as it has in the past.
DOUBLE CHARACTERS are ENTERED WHEN USING Apple bluetooth keyboard. Requires restartā¦ usually. ā¦ or thatās what I did after fooling around with the ROTOR for a while. When inside a text message I was sending and the ROTOR choices did not fix it.
BTW checking inside of connected Bluetooth devices under Keyboards, it says ā2ā Apple wireless keyboards were available. One connected and one not. However this was a discovery I made following the aforementioned steps of using rotor and restarting. The restart fixed the issue of double characters being entered in a single keystroke, temporarily, not permanently. Intermittently,, I have to restart the iphone and with some regularity.
Noticing this 2nd ghost keyboard anomaly, I then used āFORGET THIS DEVICEā to delete the non connected Apple keyboard.
I have only ever had but one anyhow but had thought to get one more due to the difficulty connecting and disconnecting between the iphone 5c and . various Apple TVs. Itās a real chore and just turning a device off is not enough to let the keyboard pair with another active deviceā¦ at least with IOS 7.2 anyhowon the 5c and the latest Apple TV update on an ATV III...
Regardless, it remains a crap shoot as to whether or not youāll have to restart yet again to halt the double character input from your Apple Keyboard. Iāll try using NOTES and keeping it open to see if that prevents the issue but it is a REALLY BIG PROBLEM and a ridiculous nuisance.
Other as posted results from that thread here are my issues too.
In the contacts list in App Switcher, . I donāt even get all of my contacts in this list. Just some weird random cache of a handful of my contacts. Most of which I seldom contact..
If there is a caveat to this upgrade/update from IOS 7.2 to 8.1ā¦., it is that until I could pair a keyboard with the 5c I could not properly satisfy the initial setup demands for icloud, apple id, passwords, etc. .
Iām unsure too about the touch typing item. I do it and have been a touch typer since high school and that was eons ago. Iāve always assumed any keyboard default was set to this condition. Otherwise, a sighted person will merely hunt and peck using their vision, so why is there a setting for it, if indeed there is one I canāt find it.?
Calendar ā can not set a calendar event either using SIRI, or manually. I can input all of the data, but not save the event.
The update disabled Cell dATA.
It also deleted my voice mail code. Re-enabling one took about a dozen attempts to reset and activate it.
It took several tries to enable the new SPEECH HQ voice.
As I find more issues I will post them.
My thinking is to restore from a backup I made in itunes on a win 7 pc I made a couple weeks ago.
Most of, if not all, of the third party apps installed work fine, as far as I can tell. The majority of issues surround the OEM OS and associated Apple apps accompanying the update..
I have about 7GB of free space, and a total of 46 apps onboard.
Hope this is of some help.
None of those problems
I don't have any of those problems in 8.1.
I don't have those problems
I don't have those problems either. I think some people have more problems with iOS 8 than others for some reason.
Suggesting a restore
Hi. I would agree with others...I'm not having any of those issues at all. Notifications didn't read for me sometimes when I first installed iOS 8, but they were fixed in 8.02, and 8.1 is even better. I would definitely suggest a reset, and download your apps and just start over. It's a pain, but it looks like that's your best option.
Difference between 8.01 and 8.1
Just to cover the basics here, you are sure you have the 8.1 update and not just the 8.01 update? Huge difference between the two in substance, but little difference in name, especially with a screenreader. Just wanted to point it out, as I could see where someone could miss the update, especially given they are saying the update item isn't reading properly.
Good luck.
Whish I had your iphone.
My version of IOS is 8.1 12(either v or b) 411; according to the ABOUT window in SETTING>GENERAL>ABOUT
MY OWN NOTION HERE IS THAT DURING THE DOWNLOADING OF THE os, OR IT'S INSTALL, SOME PECULILAR THING TOOK PLACE IN SOME UPGRADES WHICH DID NOT TAKE PLACE IN OTHERS, GIVEN THE INCREDIBLE SIMILARITY OF POOR FUNCTIONALITY INSTANCES. THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY OF "THE SAME THING IS GOING ON WITH MINE" AND ON THE FLIP SIDE OF THAT COIN.... "a large number of issue-less upgrades."
I must use VO to use the phone. Period. So that is/was always on. I also like to have the colors inverted. Chose larger characters. Also chose or choose SOUNDS, as I saw no option in 7.2 to cancel them out like one can in 8.
I did not download and install EACH available update in succession, but downloaded and installed ONLY the latest, 8.1 iteration.
In fact, I had inadvertently or the phone did it for me, download the initial 8.0 version. Scanning the web and noticing issues with it, I deleted it from the phone deciding to just wait it out.
On the evening of the new release quite by accident, I thought to check and see if the phone had done another pre-download of the latter version, and it had not but then began instantly upon checking for one. I waited it out as it took a very long time. Then figured the bugs were probably out of it or had been addressed and once the OS was totally on board, told the phone to install it.
Once more, the caveat here is that I am unable to competently enter data into the phone without my keyboard so I nixed the rush of requests for icloud and so forth figuring to input them later on. Other than this last note of dismissing inconsequential data entries, I did nothing unusual.
And here we areā¦ or I am, and enduring nearly all or al of the issues outlined here in the thread regarding instances of errant behavior once the latest OS is installed.
Iād say that thread is definitely onto somethingā¦ Why this has happened is not nearly the issue, the real issue is enabling those who are having such trouble to remedy their situations. Promptly.
Problems Still Remain in iOS 8.1
Admittedly iOS 8.1 fixed many of the access issues found in the initial iOS 8 releases. However, there are several major issues that still remain.
1. When the phone is locked and an alert comes in, VoiceOver often wil not speak the entire message. For example, if an alert such as "Lunch with Tom at 9:00" pops up to the locked screen, VoiceOver will often only speak "9:00".
2. Output from SIRI is often truncated. For example, if you ask a question, SIRI will often just stop in the middle of the response.
3. I found it impossible to create an appointment with SIRI. If I say "create an appointment at 9:00 pm on Monday", SIRI will say something like "Created an appointment on", and then stop and not ask if I want to actually schedule the event (although the text asking to verify the event does appear on the screen).
So, there are still lots of problems to be fixed. We all need to keep reporting them to Apple (which I am doing).

Say What?
Jessica:
You write: "Also, you can not restore a phone running iOS 8 from a backup that was made on iOS 7. To restore from a backup the device needs to be running the same or higher iOS then the one the backup was made on." Come again? Don't you mean that you cannot restore a backup taken on iOS 8 to a phone running iOS 7? If your quoted statement were true, there would be no point in taking a backup before upgrading to a new iOS. As you say, though, using an iTunes backup won't work for restoring a version of iOS because the backup doesn't store an iOS or total iPhone memory image; Apple has not seen fit to provide for restoration of a system image such as one can do on a Windows system, or at least I know of none.
Incidentally, I hear tell that there is a mode called DFU that will allow one to restore an iOS bypassing all the validation checks Apple makes. The problem is that one must usually trust a third-party site to have a validated copy of the iOS version you want and that's problematic IMO. Of course, if one still has the .IPSW file from an iOS 7 backup on a PC, one could conceivably use that for the DFU restore. But that process is tricky IMO and there will be little help in cleaning up any iPhone mess one makes. So I wouldn't recommend this -- at least not for a newby.
All the more reason to wait several months before upgrading, at least when a new major version of iOS is released IMO.
I'm all upgraded and I'm fine
I'm all upgraded and I'm fine. hardly any of the apple vis bugs that you are all seeing. So just upgrade and report those bugs as we all know apple will start working on ios 9 in about 3-4 months in the alpha stage..
Take care.
8.1 has fixed some, I'd hate to have dealt with 8.0
... although I think perhaps I still maybe dealing with 8.0 problems.
I have the 8.112b411 version... and it sucks.
all of the issues you clima are mine too.
Additionally, on a trip to the local VA outpaitient Pharmacy today, I wanted to route the trip and asked SIRI to find it. Siri came gback after several attempts to convey the information thru the quick cut offs using SIRI includes now, and SIRI says, "I found several Drug Stores in your area." as I assume a list was generated too. after a few tries I reverted to using "Blind Square" as it had been input as a fav. I got the address and tried to use Apple's Maps. Maps would not route the trip. Resorting to Google Maps, and inputing the exact address, I was finally successful in planing and navigating the rout for my directionally challenged friend.
SIRI has always found this address/location previously.
enroute, I tried to find out about traffic, and other apps would not switch to Cell DATA even though they were already on the Cell data access list. Trying to toggle the cell data yielded no success. effectively no other app which relies upon cell data when away from wy fy would actuate... despite appropriate efforts to amend the circumstances.
I did say prefviously following this horrid upgrade I found Cell Data had been disabled during the upgrade.
Now no efforts to enable it seem valid for most third party apps, though admitedly, I have not tried all 47 yet... and really, shouldn't have to.
So, Apple, when is 8.2 slated to be released?
BTW... exactly what is the link to contact Apple support and notify them personally about these circumstances?
trust me, I sincerely wish things were not as they are on my poor little 5c.
7 and 8 in the wrong places.
Hi. Sorry. I looked over my original comment and saw I had the numbers 7 and 8 in the wrong places in that sentence. I have edited the comment and switched the placement of the numbers. Please read it again and let me know if it makes more sense now. Thanks and sorry again.
I am also
I am also still having several problems with iOS 8.1, particularly the one where you can't rearrange icons on the bottom row of your home screens. This is rather annoying, because i prefer to have all my apps in alphabetical order, and to get them that way I have to reset the home screen back to factory settings every time I uninstall and reinstall apps. It's a bit broken, if you catch my drift.
siri and not finding the closest location
I've also encountered an issue with siri. When I tried asking for the nearest pizza hut, it told me that there is one a little ways from you and found the one all the way in Lynnwood which is over 20 miles away from me. There is a pizza hut not even 5 miles away that it didn't find for what ever reason.
Another example was when I tried asking for the closest bank of america and again, it said the nearest was over 10 miles away when there is one right down the block from me. Is this an apple maps issue or a siri issue?
Siri location issue
Hello,
I think the issues people are having with Siri have to do with either Apple Maps, or location services on iOS 8. I think it has an issue with location services, because I've had the same exact issue with BlindSquare, Foursquare, and Swarm as well, not just Siri. Google Maps seems to work fine for the most part though, so it makes it more difficult to decide if this is an app issue, or a system issue. Given that Siri is having issues, I think its a system issue.
Don't believe people that don't have the issues
Honestly, I do not believe any of the people who say they do not have the issues. You are either not noticing them or aren't using the phone to the extent others are. To say you don't have the issue is pointless when the vast, vast majority are. Perhaps you should describe your system settings so that the others who are suffering can replicate and see some relief. Other than that, why say you don't have the issues? I am wlling to bet that you are and you just don't notice them.
Yes, I realize how silly what I just wrote seems, but it is very upsetting for 100 people to say these issues exist and then, one or two say no.
If I have an issue, I really have it I promise
I don't come in here and say I don't have an issue just to say it. If I have an issue I'm going to describe it in as much detail as I can. The one thing I do agree with is to have people describe their settings so that maybe someone can suggest a change, but with so many settings that might be hard to do. Good thought, but seriously...we all use our phones very differently, so I think that's why some folks are having issues and some aren't.
I have an iPhone six lately
I have an iPhone six lately Siri just stops working randomly I'll hit the home button it will make the sound and then make a sound like it's not capturing anything. When this happens dictation also doesn't work. Since 8.1 when Siri and dictation stop now Safari stopped loading pages. It's pretty annoying especially when I went out and spent the money for the iPhone 6 and now I can't even load normal webpages. It happens every 30 to 45 minutes like I'm in a demo mode.
reboot your phon
If my phone starts acting a bit funky, I just reboot it by turning it off, and then wait about 30 seconds or so and then turn it back on. Really, folks, these are just small annoyances. If you continue to experience issues, write to apple and tell them. I can't stress that enough. If you guys really want these issues to be fixed, how else do you expect Apple to know? They are not mind readers, you know. That's not aimed at one particular person, I'm mentioning this to everyone who is still experiencing problems. and from what it sounds like these aren't really show stoppers, just very minor annoyances in most cases and there are workarounds if you're patient enough.
encountered another issue
I encountered another issue and I'm not sure if this was previously stated.
My voiceover just stopped talking after dictating. Has anyone else encountered this?
I've encountered the dictation bug
Yep I've seen this too. To fix it, toggle Vo off and then back on again and that'll do it.
4 HOURS LATER....
I spent about 4 hours on the phone with Apple support yesterday. Very little came from it, although it was not a complete waste of time.
Apps which are supposed to switch to cell data when away from wy fy finally do that. This came by resetting the wy fy .. logging off and then logging back onto it by using Settings>General>reset>reset wy fy.
Also, SIRI would say it entered a Calendar event though upon checking it out, no calendar event was actually accomplished with SIRI or manually once no entry was discoveredā¦ this was fixed by enabling Calendar in settingsicloud.
.
However, the major existing issues: SIRI speech being truncated and SIRI not responding appropriately from specific inquiries; VO not fully reading text on the screen as it had prior to the upgrade from 7.2 to 8.112v411, AND keyboard entering double characters, were all unable to be resolved.
I was informed these unresolved issues were not mine alone and AS has been seeing a deluge of users who have these problems existing on their devices since upgrading. The last tech and I spent a ton of time and he heard much of what was and was not functioning properly on my iphone 5c, and told me his understanding was that yet another update was forthcoming which would address at least these 3 predominate problems. Very likely, others as well.
That is where it was left. The unresolved issues noted above remain my lot until some future update is released.
I failed to mention that when a text is composed and sent, it does not always send immediately. A couple of my latest texts were sent out hours later. As well, receiving texts is likewiseā¦ with texts to androids. Iphone I messages seem to be more prompt.
So now I guess we simply wait for apple to figure out the concerns with Voice Over and SIRI, and fix the incoorect character generations of their Keyboards with the IOS
PS.. THE DICTATION BUG WAS ADDRESSED THOUGH LITTLE CAME FROM IT DURING MY CALL. lOOK FOR THIS TO BE ADDRESSED TOO IN A LATER RELEASE.
Minor is in the eye of the beholder... it seems

Title: reboot your phon
from what it sounds like these aren't really show stoppers, just very minor annoyances in most cases and there are workarounds if you're patient
Reboot your phone? ā¦ has yet to resolve any of my issues. Period.
Rebooting a phone is NOT always a convenient thing.
The only item on my iphone affected by rebooting is that SOMETIMES it stops the double character entries the apple Keyboard is now providing since the update to 8.1. in fact, rebooting to amend double characters is a crap shoot. It might temporarily fix it, and it may not, and it has not in fact, fixed the issue at all on my iphone. .
ā¦and it occurs intermittedly. Sometimes during the writing, often though, from the beginning.
Rebooting has not fixed Voice Over, SIRIās new level of incompetency, or some of the other major occurances the latest updates have handed many users.
I fail to see how you can say these are minor annoyances in the first place.
in fact, if it took a reboot to fix an issue, that is understandable. A 'fix' IMHO means it does not occur again. REBOOTING has yet to fix anything since I put 8.1 on my device.
Truth be told, if I had to own a product which regularly required rebooting to temporarily fix a trouble, and the maker did not resolve it somehow, soon or eventually, Iād never trust their products or any of their forthcoming updates again.
Apple is well aware many items of imporper activity exist still with a great many users, though continuing to submit these inadequacies to them with specifics is certainly the proper route to follow, regardless.
They are still minor annoyances, Jim.
Jim: a reboot is a windows fix, sorry toonhead, no disrespect meant, I know you love your XP. ;) Seriously though it's the first step we're taught and someimes it does fix something, even on the Mac platform. Siri, stopping speech, voice over crashing, the scrolling bug you need to interact with just a bit more to get what you need, do any of these bugs prevent you from picking up your phone, using it, and putting it down? I submit they do not. I submit, wishing the release on your device was a reasonable request, and now it wasn't granted. How irritating is it for the double characters? for me, I just double check before sending, composing, whatever i'm doing. so why these are a crucial, I don't like these is beyond my capability of knowledge. Let me give you another example of an annoyance, that annoys me, maybe not someone else, using the os10. Pushing the shift key along with a letter, number, punctuation sign, caused "New Line selected." to be spoken. I noticed this in one of the betas, contact apple though the right way of feedbakc. Nothing seemed to happen as this was still present in each upcoming beta. I finally took matters into my hands hours before release, asking accessibility, hoping I did not violate the NDA. I didn't and they passed on my comments, so though I was hoping it was fixed it hasn't been. Now I really don't like this new line thing. I'm not creating a dictionary entery to stop it, I'm not flipping out, I'm just biding time until the next update. This bug has not prevented my enjoyment of the experience overall, so besides a little frustration, are those bugs that awful? for the record, I haven't seenanyone else post iwth a five C other then you so it could be speciffic to your model, as the four S had bugs too.
Ok so I screwed up. sue me!
Siobhan
I haven't used Windows xp since, like, 2011? Anyways...The reason I mentioned rebooting the phone was because there was a time where no Bluetooth devices would pare with my iPhone. A simple reboot solved the problem. It's not always ideal and I know it's not always practical, and it doesn't relate to what happened with these bugs. I really was only trying to help. Sorry the help wasn't appreciated. I'll just go off in my little corner over here and leave it to the experts.
toonhead, i was teasing
fyi, I was only joking, but i did vaguely remember you were quite happy with xp for a long time while others I being one, went with Vista or something. no harm was meant at all. as for Jim, Unless we can corroberate his findings, I'm looking towards device specific problems. Remember a lot of four s users were told don't touch that with a ten foot pole.
true
Ok, point well taken. What's so frustrating about this whole thing is that one guy might have a bug, but someone else might not have it for whatever reason. For example, take that nasty Bluetooth keyboard bug that was present in 8.0 and to some degree, 8.02. I didn't ever have that particular bug, but my girlfriend did with her phone, and we were using the exact same type of Bluetooth keyboard, and all our settings were exactly the same. I know this, because I helped her set it up. So why this happens remains a mystery. I know not all my suggestions help, but I sure try.
Just a clarification!
I am running 2 phones. A 6 and a 5C.
They both have bugs. The 6 has minor, where the 5C has some major issues.
Accessibility has received many bug reports from me. They have run many diagnostic reports on 5C. Accessibility is well aware the 5C is having issues other models. don't. They are working on those and isolating.
you would want to shoot the mechanic who messed up your car.. lo
No offense takenā¦ and certinaly none offered. Then or now.
I get it. Itās just a phoneā¦ well, partly. Iām not one of the I gangsters, nor am I one of the Iāll wait in the rain or cold or heat to get one of the latest releases. Iām a āseeing as I have a phone in my hand, Iāll call you rather than text youā, sort of guy. In fact Iām one of those who had to wait on the Federal Government and used ongoing petitioning to them to get one to help me with acquiring a higher level of independence. This is due to the loss I incurred during my enlistment, which took so very much of my sight. I even had to make two roadtrips for it. One to W. Palm Beach and one to Birmingham, as governmental incompetency and red tape precluded me from acquiring one at the first venue and added another six months to the time frame, winding up with a waiting period of about a year..
So for me, the feature set of the phone IS the phone. Predominately voice over. SIRI is a bit of a luxury, even for meā¦ and otherās like me. Vets or not.
So now, for a time, Iāll revert to being leashed to a desktop. Once more.
Either I use SIRI to send a text, and of late SIRI is well, crazy. SIRI simply doesnāt recognize much of my speech, or drops out enough of it so itās unintelligibleā¦ or I can use the keyboard with any luck at all..
This actually brings up an important aspect. Why, when SIRI functionality is diminished to the point of nonsense and unusability, why isnāt there the province for direct global input into search boxes or engines by voice as an option? A selection one makes in settings which doesnāt necessitate one finding some near invisible icon somewhere within the forrest of other icons and characters contained in the on screen keyboard, that allows speech input directly where text would ordinarily be associated. Perhaps it could be set into the accessibility settings as an option that would then enable maybe no icons for entering text, or for text to be entered via a keyboard, as one might more often employ at home or work? Rather than hoping a text box will accept voice dictation here or there, maybe.
Truth be told I donāt care too much if third party apps wonāt or donāt follow suit with this notion either. Apart from some apps which either peruse personal music from a hard drive or a server, or those who merely stream radio like content, or work as a remote interface for another device, I have no use for video content on this tiny gizmo.
Navigating apps whose search engines find locations like Blind square, sendaro Look around or local news affiliates who provide timely weather and traffic reports, etc., arenāt or werenāt syncing up with cell data, and have become useless. Now this exceeds annoyance level for me. If the feature set of the phone is made unusable then itās just a phone, and there was no need to drop hundreds of bucks for just a phone, or in my case around $40K to $60K now is there? Remember, you helped pay for it.
Of course not.
When functionality of a device reverts or diminishes to levels far below itās intended or apparent abilities, that is more than an irritating aspect.
Itās sort of like having a sports car which only uses one of itās five speeds and the AC and Sirus radio work intermittently, or a HD cable box that only provides local channels in SD, sporadically. No one would want to deal with such things, given what is being paid for them.
Effectively for now I got a flip phone that costs most anyone, $600, and some a whole lot more. . How annoying is that? To me, itās a whole lot of well, itās more than any minor concern.
Siri
Not sure if this has already been discussed, but the Siri truncating issue also affected me. My work around is to turn off VO then use Siri to send text, etc. Once done, I turn on VO. Sure itās not perfect but it works for now.
I suspect 8.2 will be along shortly. This is the first time Iāve seen Apple release a full update in such a short amount of time. Despite the bugs, I thank Apple for making the effort to make the IOS accessable as it is. Even the latest Android offering is not as friendly.
Cheerios!
