hi guys,
is this happening to anyone else?
i have reported it, and i am waiting a response.
ipad, when held in land scape mode, the music app does not work.
music plays, but no sound.
force restart the ipad, hold it in portrate mode and it works just fine.
doesn't happen on iphone 11.
also, i have been reporting voiceover (which is the main reason for my writing this), wandering all over the screen since ios 16.
with every release, it just seems to get worse rather than better.
i listened to the recent pod cast about the new "listen to page" feature in safari.
o my god!!! when the feature was activated on the pod cast, voiceover could clearly be heard speaking over siri, and the same when the feature was turned off.
this should have been picked up the first time this was tested!!!
as a programmer, i would have considered my work a complete disgrace had i ever let something as obvious as this escape testing.
even the guy demonstrating this feature made no comment about the conflict of one voice talking over another.
apple, what are we dealing with here?
are you turning into microsoft?
i can be just as frustrated with a é200.00 android tablet as i can be with an ipad, only these cost somewhere in the region of é1,500.00
why would you buy an ipad and spend all of this extra money just to be equally frustrated?
the reason i went for apple in the first place was its reliability.
now, it seems, they dont even test their music apps for example, never mind voiceover.
at this stage, i am done looking for support. there is only so much those lovely people on the accessibility line can do. the rest is up to the ios programmers.
come on guys, get off your a**s and do your job!!!
sorry for all of this ranting, but is there anyone else out there that feels the same way?
as mentioned above, now, its not just voiceover, but their own apps (music and safari) don't work properly.
apple, hold off on any further releases of ios.
take the one you have, make it work properly, and then start further development.
if you dont, you are going to continue to put bug on top of bug on top of bug.
also, does anyone from apple development actually read these comments?
cheers and regards,
patrick

Patrick, winning a million bucks is easier
I'd maybe suggest updating to 17.3 as even though I don't have an Ipad it might fix maybe the music issue you're having. apple's going more downhill with each passing device release. If you count, there's seven versions of operating systems. Mac
Iphone
iPad
Watch OS
TV OS
Homepod whatever
Now this vision OS
Ok I was off by one, coffee didn't kick in. If we don't starting adding honestly disabled workers to this and many other tech companies, we will never have a foot in the door no pun intended to get something we need. I'm convinced, they're taught voice over and turn it on, touch a few things, then off it goes to the next cycle. I was surprised that a senior advisor was doing Lyft one day. Shows you how much the workers are being paid right? Anyway as long as the underutilized Mac and other platforms besides mainstream Windows society are being messed with, things won't change.
accessibility in this case.
hi siobhan,
in this case, the person on the accessibility line was fully aware of how to use voiceover. however, i am beginning to think that they train about 7/8 people fully in accessibility and let them answer all the queries.
despite the accessibility agent being extremely helpful, everything has to go "up the chain".
i always wanted to know, what is actually at the top of the "chain".
in this case, its obviously someone who couldn't care less about disabled people, despite apple saying things like we want everyone to be able to use our devices and things like that.
you can be absolutely sure, that it definitely is not someone who is disabled.
anyway, given my frustration, once my "i" products break or go out of use from just being old, i will just go for crappy android and put up with it.
i dont mind paying for something if you get what you pay for.
however, paying 15,000 euros for an iphone or paying 200 euros for a samsung is a big difference.
up to ios 16, you were sure that the accessibility feature (voiceover) worked.
now, just keep guessing what is next to go wrong with the next release of ios.
might as well use talkback or something like that for android.
besides, throwing a samsung phone through the window costs a lot less than an iphone!!! hahaha
now, its not just their voiceover that doesn't work, but their apps are starting down the same road.
i wonder, what about the other accessibility features like zume, magnifier etc?
are they becoming crap as well?
i have no way to test these, because i can't see the screen.
all of the tec firms are always crying out for "new tallant" from colleges etc. however, the kids these days dont know how to program, never mind actually testing anything.
if i had released a piece of software as bad as this when i was programming, i would have been fired.
my god, even the basics like voiceover talking over siri in safari is a disgrace, and for the guy making the pod cast on the "listen to page" not to comment on this lack of testing, says it all.
just once, i would like to see apple get some of us together across the table and actually spend a week listening to us.
as a software developer, if i was handed a system as bad as this, i would instruct the team to stop all development.
then, i would spend at least the following 2 months fixing what was wrong.
then, test it and finally release it.
after the public have tested it and are happy with it, then start development again.
apple should stick to the current version of ios until they get it right.
then, they would have a stable platform on which to continue development.
the same goes for the other operating systems you mentioned.
i sold my apple watch because it was so bad!!
can you tell me, where ios 17.3 is available?
my devices tell me they are up to date with ios 17.2.1 (i am in dublin).
cheers and good luck,
patrick
Bad code, Open AI, and the future of stupid
@Patrick,
I kinda agree with pretty much everything you mentioned above. With the exception of Android. While I will be the first to admit that "I" am a genuine Apple Fanboy, I will also be at least "one of" the first (on AppleVis) to admit that Google has taken over Apple's role of dedication to Universal Access to their products.
Is it perfect? hell no, is anything tech-wise? However, if Apple completely fails those of us who require working accessibility software, Android is about the only other "viable" option we've got.
As for bad programming, it would help if the lads fresh outta college would actually learn to code, and stop using 'cheats; like Open AI. When I was coding in college, I would have been kicked out of school for doing any such thing, but alas, that is the future of programming and software development.
Is it any wonder everything is breaking in the past couple of years?
You could try beta testing Patrick
One of my biggest pet peeves is people beta testing who aren't sure, they just want the next OS release. apple did away with the hundred dollar a year program, except now we have novice testers. I don't expect someone to get every bug known to man, nor do I expect people to have a great knowledge of voice over, or zoom, or even IOS. I expect people to put it through it's regular paces. What bothers me is because of advanced wording before you sign up, people on here freak that their device will brick. Yes, there might be outstanding issues when you install it. That's why I read the release notes. I know phones are expensive but I put beta software on my Mac and phone. I leave my watch alone so that knock wood, if I get stuck, i have one working device until things get fixed. I wish a lot more people beta tested because the use cases of anything on IOS is so different. I don't use the music app in landscape. That doesn't mean because someone else does, it shouldn't continue to work. You can sign up for free to beta test and I think you should. It's not unstable and you might have annoying things like voice over talking when you don't want, but report report report bugs and they do get fixed. It would help if a bug were to appear in say twenty people's systems, it will get noticed more then someone or the same three people reporting time and again. I'm not giving Apple room here but how are they supposed to nail down a bug when it's .00003 of devices? They need feedback constructive, not most of the crap that's on here, I won't lie. You need to write concisely, be an adult, be descriptive and show Apple you want them to help fix problems, not just shoot off your moth. Anyway try beta testing see if that helps some of your issues.
bad coding.
Hi Brian,
its nice to see that someone else agrees with me.
i started programming in 1985 when you actually had to write your own code.
now, they grab a control from a "tool box" and dump it on the screen.
for example, the last time i used visual studio, if you grabbed buttons and dumped them on to the screen, they automatically got the name "button1" "button2" etc.
i had a major arguement with a programmer in work in relation to this verry thing.
he put pretty pictures on the buttons and went on his merry way.
unfortunately for him, i happened to be selected as a random tester.
just imagine the arguement we had about accessibility and his sloppy work when i tested it!!!
anyway, i am getting away from my first point of this entire topic which is why the hell are we not being taken seriously?
just for those of you out there,
1. is your voiceover still wandering all over the screen?
2. is anyone else having the same problems with the music app on the ipad?
3. is anyone else surprised by what i said about the pod cast, and the lack of commenting on siri speaking over voiceover?
4. does anyone have a suggestion as to how we might, as a group, approach apple and "make" them listen to what we have to say?
there are protests going on everywhere about equality, war, etc.
lets get together and make apple give us what we not only deserve, but in law are entitled to, being treated equally.
cheers,
patrick
beta testing.
Hi Siobhan,
sorry, just saw your comment now, before i wrote my last one.
i dont want an arguement about what should and shouldn't be said on this forum, and i find it offensive that you refer to my "shooting off my mouth"!!
i am as much entitled to say on here what anyone else is.
my point is nothing to do with beta testing, although i do take your point.
i am simply talking about things that would have appeared before apple released their latest things for beta testing, like voiceover talking over siri, the music app not working etc.
let me ask you:
1. have you tried the listen to page option in safari?
2. have you tried the music app in landscape mode?
if so, did you discover these problems?
i would be verry interested in these answers, as it appears that you are a beta tester.
if you haven't noticed these, try them now and let me know.
if you did notice them during testing, apple didn't give a dam that you reported it.
Oh man, you misunderstood my comment
I'm sorry Patrick. I wasn't saying you, were shooting off your mouth. I was directed at a general comment, a general type of way to comment. I wasn't trying to single you out at all. I'm sorry. I didn't test either of those, but I stand behind my idea to beta test not just you but a lot of us here and around the world. I'm not in say India, or Britain, or Africa. They have issues that aren't being resolved yet for whatever reason can't or don't want to beta test. How will apple listen if the same number of testers, or the same cases are reported? We need a lot more people to bring up the repetitive issues again and again. we will be listened to if we make a concise effort to show people what's wrong. If that means taking a ride share to an apple store day in day out until you get what's done? Do it. Again I'm sorry you felt I singled you out. That's untrue. If I had an issue I would've brought it off a public forum.
no worries.
Hi Siobhan,
no problem, dont worry about it.
i do take your point about other countries not testing, or perhaps not enough reporting.
where i am in dublin, it is the big retailers like harvey norman etc that sell these products.
there are apple stores, but generally, they are verry small walk-ins, and are only interested in selling or repairing.
it would be nice to have someone actually take a report, have a look at it and get a proper response.
that is not my experience in dublin.
however, ireland is about 100 years behind the rest of europe when it comes to something like this, so i am not surprised.
i would sign up for beta testing, but i am the first to admit, that there are a lot of functions on the phone/ipad that i dont use.
as a result, i would miss a great many things, and my testing would not be completely accurate.
however, returning to my earlier points, i am sure that most people using phones/ipads at the verry least listen to music and browse the internet.
voiceover talking over siri?
music not working in land scape?
these are actual apple apps.
this type of thing should show up as soon as the app is opened.
come on apple, this is basic testing.
cheers,
patrick
ios17.3
hi guys,
previous to my comments, the music app now appears to be working in land scape mode on the ipad.
haven't spent much time with it yet, but at least it plays.
still no change in voiceover. its still wandering all over the screen.
as i said earlier, i reported this in ios 16.
come on apple, we are now 1.3 versions ahead. get it right.
while i am here, does anyone have a problem with siri voices being deleted at random?
i like siri voice one (u.s.) for my voiceover, as i find it sounds best (personal choice).
however, from time to time, the ipad reverts to samantha. the iphone does not.
the way i found around it was to select samantha, then go to siri, select siri voice one and it downloads again.
after that it works just fine.
just a bit of a pain in the a**s, thought i would mention it anyway in case someone has the same problem.
just to be clear, this is still happening in ios 17.3
regards,
patrick
Shhh...
Don't let Bingo catch wind of this. He will lose his mind. 😑
