Hello
I wanted to announce a new version of Intuit's GoPayment app that includes a visual redesign. We all know that when an app changes, there will be a learning curve to the new interface. This note is to let you know in advance what to look out for.
First off, I want to thank Michael Hingson and Rob Slaughterbeck, who gave me some early feedback on the beta version of the app. Mike's feedback helped us fix a couple major bugs before the official release.
GoPayment is an app that allows you to take credit card sales via the cell phone. All of these apps that depend on an earphone-based credit card swiper have a problem with screen readers. To use this with a swiper, you will need to disable VoiceOver prior to plugging in the swiper and then reactivate VoiceOver after swiping the card and removing the card swiper.
You can download the app and use the test drive option on the home screen to sign in with a pre-configured test account to see if this is an app that will work with your business: GoPayment on iTunes
The good news is that the latest version has good accessibility. You shouldn't find any blockers, and please let me know if you do discover one.
Sales Screen
When you first open the app, there is a screen that allows you to create a sale. At the top left is the menu button for additional settings. There's a running subtotal at the top center. This is updated as you add items to your cart. You can detect the new amount by using touch navigation. In the center of the screen are two buttons: Amount and Items. These are actually tabs and we will be updating this role in the future.
The Amount screen lets you add an item name, such as "consultation" and an amount. The Sales Tax is included if you have configured this in your tax settings.
The Items screen includes a list of items you have previously configured. The sample app is a bit confusing, as the product title and description are the same text (Beige Clay). These are meant to represent pottery in a fictitious store. Currently, you can focus on the product title, cost, or description and tap to add to the cart. This should be combined into a single element in the future. After you add an item to the cart, the subtotal at the top of the screen will change. In the future, we will add an audio alert to let you know this has been updated. You can use touch navigation to find the subtotal. Next to the subtotal will now be a button for "check out", "View Details", and "item count". Clicking on item count will take you to the view details.
On that screen, there's a selector at the bottom right that allows you to filter the items in your inventory. This is currently announced as category selector item. It doesn't yet tell you the selected value. If you tap on this, it will take you to a selector of your shop's categories and will announce the selected category, such as "Containers". There is currently an unlabeled button announced as "chevron up", this is the same function as the category selector.
The "Amount" and "Items" tabs are two pages within a collection. You can easily switch between them with a three-finger swipe across the middle of the screen.
For check out, there is an option to scan the credit card with the phone's camera. This is a good option for low-vision users or those without a card swiper. Please note, the camera-based card scanner has a higher credit card charge rate. It's the same as typing in the number. The camera scanner will automatically scan the card when it has been detected and is in focus. It will give you a slight audio alert when the card has been captured. It will then take you to a form with the credit card information pre-filled. You will still need to get the user's zip code, name, and the security code.
Transactions You can open the menu at the top left and then select Transactions from the menu to see your past transactions. These are grouped by date. The team has done a nice job of making the transactions easy to understand.
Recommendations
I think you'll find it safe to upgrade your GoPayment application to the latest version. It may take some time to get used to the new layouts, but the app has good labels and you should find it easier and more efficient to create an invoice and complete a purchase. Please let me know if you find any issues.

Card Swiping Update
GoPayment, along with other point of sale applications that depend on the earphone jack, has had a problem with sending loud chirping noises to the VoiceOver user when trying to scan a credit card. This is caused by the app trying to communicate with the card reader and is broadcasting to the user as well.
We've made a change in the latest version of GoPayment to address this issue. GoPayment now recognizes you have VoiceOver running and disables the card reader option. You will instead see a notice that the card reader is not available when VoiceOver is running.
The solution is to temporarily disable VoiceOver (triple tap home button), plug in the card reader, swipe the card, remove the card reader, and restart VoiceOver. The app recognizes when VoiceOver is re-enabled and will let you know the status of the card swiping.
This may seem complicated, but I know from experience that the noise could be painful and we wanted to remove that stress from the user experience.
Another update
I wanted to let you know that GoPayment now includes a BlueTooth card scanner. This is available by request. The Bluetooth card readers works great with VoiceOver.
