Hi
I would like to inform visually impaired readers of an app I initially wrote just to help me and members of our local club (called Helping Hands for the blind) find out where you were around our town but because there was such keen interest I decided to make it more user-friendly, work anywhere in the world and published it on iTunes.
It is called “Where Am I – with speech“ and doesn’t require ‘voice over’ as even the help information is read to you. To find out your location after launching app you can either touch the very large button at the top of screen, double tap anywhere with one finger or just shake the device firmly. The app then speaks the road name and if you are near a property the house number as well. On screen you have large text with this same information plus the area that you are in and the postcode/zip code. If you would like to hear all this information, just double tap with two fingers.
If you swipe horizontally in either direction or touch the map button bottom left the screen changes showing your location in the middle of the map and surrounding road names. This is intended if you want help from a sighted person to find a nearby location you’re trying to reach. The main use for this map screen, however, is if you are walking or on public transport as it speaks the road names as you move along.
Could I please ask somebody who downloads the app to submit it to the iOS App Directory and leave a review or any comments, as I’m always willing to try to improve the app for us all. It runs on any iPhone or modern iPad that has network connection running iOS 8 or newer.
