Introducing Travelear: Listen to the World in 3D Audio

Hey friends! I'm an audio engineer and I record 3D Soundscapes in my travels around the world (I travel a lot for work). I feature the soundscapes on my app called Travelear. It's free on the App Store.

I record cities, forests, music festivals and more with a special 3D binaural microphone. To get the full experience make sure you use your headphones when listening.

I've used the app with the native iOS screen reader and it works pretty well. I'd like to know what you think and get suggestions on how I can improve. Thanks and looking forward to hearing what you think!

There are some phenominal recordings here. I found the Voice Over access confusing for a while but got there in the end. I just acquired a pair of Nuraphones which really brought out the detail and feeling of space. A stand-out was the recent Sacromento Airport one for realism, and and the London Flower Market but they are all great and very different. I also tried the app with a pair of B&W P7’s with an Oppo 2 headphone headphone amp, and the dynamics of recordings like the Boston Fireworks Display really comes over.

I have the excellent Nature Sounds app but TravelEars does something different as it capture soundscapes full of motion and contrast. Would I pay for it? Yes, I’ve paid for most of the bundles in Nature Sounds. Would I pay a subscription? No, I don’t believe in paying over and over again for the same thing. Apple Music, yes, but it is vast in scale and choice and I’ll never be able to listen to everything even if I used it everyday. An app like TravelEars I would dip into now and again for relaxation or maybe background aural wallpaper. The recordings are brilliant though and I would certainly be hahppy to pay for select recordings or better yet small bundled offers and build a collection.

@Shersey Yes, we're taking the feedback on accessibility a high priority. My partner Nick is the developer and he's been reading all these posts as well. We're currently working on the next version and will have an update out soon.
Horses would be great, I haven't ridden a horse in a while but I could make it happen, there's a couple stables around me I could talk to about doing it. Oh yeah, Alvara Street is awesome, I haven't been down there in a while but great food and atmosphere, I'll have to plan a trip back. I haven't ridden the Boston T in years, it's a pretty cool rail though, I'll add it to my list. Walking through swamps is a really cool idea,I've been to some in Lousiana for work, but I didn't have my 3D Audio gear with me, I'll add it to my list for the next time I'm down there.
@Ornella_Jagdeo Those are great ideas especially the carnival and arcade sounds. I'll try it out with the Santa Monica Pier.
@John_Gurd Glad you liked it! The Airport is the newest 3D Soundscape I posted and your the first to review it! You've got some nice headphones, you know your stuff! Thanks for our feedback, yes we're definitely making improvements for Voice Over and and overall accessibility. Good to know for a pricing model, I appreciate it. Thanks for the specifics, it really helps us to gauge where we go from here.

I love the airplanes soundscape. It is awesome.
Well, my headphones were still cheap. because the sound is great. :-)

Last night I listened to the skate boarding sounds and it helped me to fall asleep. The recording is so wonderful I felt like I was there. I even tried to catch one that was coming towards me. lol. Is it possible that you could have a timer setting like if we set a certain time then loop it for that duration? Thanks and keep up the great work.

I love the French Quarter Jazz Festival soundscape... I listened to it right before I went to bed, and it was so relaxing.

I downloaded the app and listened to the Santa Monica Airport soundscape. It was disappointing that the air traffic control was so quiet on the recording. I could not understand most of the words spoken. It would have been cool if one could have clearly heard ATC and then the planes land and take off. This would be similar to people synchronizing the recordings of 911 calls, police radio communications, and body cam video and audio so one hears all the audio information sequenced to the time and order it happened in a police incident.

Another recording idea is on a sustainable farm. This is one where the farm animals are raised on pasture and in a manner that is ecologically sustainable. America’s most famous sustainable farmer is Joel salatin of Polyface Farms in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. He gained prominence after being profiled in Michael Pollan’s book “the Omnivore’s Dilemma.” I experienced farm animal sounds over a few days on a Midwestern farm. The day started with roosters at sunrise, turkeys were moved from the barn to a pasture by a pond, where they would eat the greenery and drink the water. Around mid to late morning, cows were allowed to graze on knee-high grass on a new pasture. I could hear them biting off enormous amounts of grass, chewing it slightly before they swallowed. Hungry cows make a lot of noise when they feast. I made sure to keep my distance because cows are about 1,200 pounds and they sometimes are not mindful of what is around them. Later, sheep gave birth to lambs. Hearing the birth of a lamb can be an emotional experience. Sheep often have multiple births and the lambs may not slide out the birth canal easily so the mother thrashes around to dislodge the lamb. When the lambs pop out, they begin to make noise and seek attention from the mother. Pigs also can be recorded. On a sustainable farm they make a lot of different noises when drinking water and tearing into a pasture. Also, if you get down to Texas, hearing a wild hog hunt would be cool. People hunt down a wild pig with a rifle or shotgun, slaughter it, process the animal in the woods or at home, and then eat the fresh pig out of a cast iron skillet all on the same day. Meat commercially sold in the United States needs to be processed at a government facility so sustainable farmers need to bring their live animals to one of a dwindling number of facilities available to independent farmers. This would not be sound rich. The problem with farm sounds is that they don’t always happen when someone wants to hear them, so staying at a farm for two or three days may be necessary to experience everything.

@Sabrina thank you! I was on the airport viewing platform for 8 hours that day recording them, I finished with a sunburn but had a good time making the recording.
@Ornella_Jagdeo thanks! The Skateboarders are a favorite of mine as well. I'm happy it helped you fall asleep. That's an interesting idea. I'm sure we could integrate a feature at some point, I'll pass it along to my partner Nick.
@Brooke Yes, live acoustic music is fantastic right? Especially live jazz. I'm glad it could help you relax, thanks for letting me know how you use the app! Do you have other favorite soundscapes that you use for something?
@Kelly I agree, the radio traffic is a bit low. When I did the recording it was a battle of location between getting the planes and the real time radio traffic from the speaker. I tried to split the difference to capture the most accurate soundscape of the airport. I could do another recording but it would mostly be the radio traffic and less of the planes, I do love the sound of airport radio traffic so I'll have to take another whack at it.
That's so interesting, I remember Joe Salatin from the documentary Food, Inc. Farm sounds would be very cool, your right I would have to be camped out for a couple days at least. It would be quite involved but it would be really cool. Thanks for the feedback!

I'm a day late letting this awesome community know but I posted 2 new 3D Soundscapes to the Travelear app yesterday. They are Barton Springs Sunny Day and Barton Springs Rainy Day. I feel they really capture the essence of summer in Austin, Texas. I'll also have a new 3D Soundscape for our Patreon members this upcoming Sunday. Thanks for listening friends! This thread has been so great in giving us direction on where we're going, I appreciate everything that is said on here, thank you!

Greetings!
I am wondering whether the TravelEar app could be posted on the canadian App Store. I enjoyed the podcast, but when I tried to download the app from the App Store, the search could not find it. I am in Canada, and I would like to access this app. Thanks.

Patreon is a hassle. Will you take Apple Pay Cash? I will send $12 as a yearly contribution. With just a few taps on my iPhone, I will zap money into your account without any fees or charges to either you or me. All that is needed is a phone number or e-mail address connected to your Apple ID to put into my contacts.

By Nick Culpin on Friday, July 27, 2018 - 04:47

Hello everyone! I'm a little late to this party but I just wanted to come in and say hello and thank you for your feedback and support. My name is Nick and as Garett mentioned earlier, I'm one of the founders and the developer on the project.

I wanted to let you know that that I've gone through and made some improvements to labeling and navigation for voice over control. I hope you find this to be helpful, let me know! I found a few bugs in the build but I'm hoping to go into review early next week and have the new version out to you by the end of the week. If you have any questions or comments for me specifically definitely feel free, I'm looking forward to working with you more on this.

Also, we are currently looking for anyone who would like to help out in other ways. Garett and I both have full-time day jobs outside of Travelear so updates are often slower than we would really like. If anyone here has social marketing experience, development experience, or general business development experience, we would love to chat.

Take care! I'll check back in with you in a couple days!

Thanks so much @Kelly! We don't have anything setup like that just yet, we're working on some stuff though. Some of the community members on here have said they would pay per soundscape to have it offline. Would you rather pay for a monthly membership or for individual soundscapes?

By Kelly Pierce on Friday, July 27, 2018 - 04:47

In reply to by Garett

Currently, you are charging $1 a month. At that level, I would just pay for the year. The amounts are so small; I am more interested in the transaction hassle. Paying for every soundscape turns the experience into digital drudgery. I do it for online shopping because the prices are the most competitive anywhere and goods are available online I can’t buy locally, even though I live in a big city. Also, goods are delivered to my house rather than needing to take a bus and carry the items on my back and shoulders.

Absolutely love the Night Chimes recording as does my 18 year old son.

BTW, what is the More Dark button?

By Kelly Pierce on Friday, July 27, 2018 - 04:47

Another recording possibility is a Carillon. These are musical instruments made out of heavy bells and played like a piano. The bells are in high bell towers often more than 100 feet in the air. People listen outside and the sound is heard in a line of sight from the bell. Walking around the bell tower while staying within the line of sight during a Carillon concert could be cool. We have a Carillon here in Chicago in Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago. The university programs a daily one hour recital. In southern California Carillons can be found in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California with a very high bell tower, in Garden Grove at the magnificent Christ cathedral, and at University of California locations in Riverside and Santa Barbara. San Diego also has a couple. I don’t believe any of these locations has daily recitals like at the University of Chicago.

@ David J -
moreDark.png is the file name, This is a result of having light and dark versions of the button without tagging for voice over. This should be resolved in the next build. Thanks for bringing that to our attention!

By Garett on Friday, July 27, 2018 - 04:47

@David_J thanks for the compliment, I love Night Chimes as well, it's very relaxing.
@Kelly thank you for the feedback, we're going to figure out the easiest way to get this done for you guys. I've never heard of the Carillon, I'll check it out, sounds really cool!

By Roxann Pollard on Monday, August 27, 2018 - 04:47
