Interacting with files on SMB shares using the Files app

Hi all,

I'm sorry if this is a really dumb question, but how exactly do I interact with files on SMB network shares in the Files app? I've successfully connected to my external hard drive connected to my Raspberry Pi over the network, but double tapping on a file only says selected. For example, I have many folders containing audiobooks. Each part or chapter in the audiobook is an mp3 file. I'd like to play these files from my iPhone, but I can't make them play at all. The same goes for other types of files like PDF documents. Is there something really simple I'm missing here?

There's nothing useful under the share option. ALl I have is the ability to copy which does nothing when tapped. There's also a section to edit apps or something, but there's nothing in there. If I go to info and try tapping the open button, nothing happens either. Is this a bug with the Files app or an issue with VoiceOver?

I don't know why it won't share.
there is a setting in itunes for file sharing; not sure if that could apply.
I use an app called ftpmanager to move files around. Works well for ipad and linux.

Can you copy a file to your i-device and play it that way?
Ios 13 is supposed to support flash drives. Maybe you can just plug the drive in soon.
