How to tag people in Facebook comments sections

If I am participating in a conversation in the comments section beneath a news article, for example, where there are many different users in the discussion, and I want to tag a specific user in my comment to indicate that I am responding to him or her specifically, how do I do this? I have tried to use the @ symbol followed by there first and last name, but this gives me a list of many people with that name, and since I can't see the profile pictures, I have no idea which of them is the one I am actually trying to talk with. Any suggestions?

If you are friends with the person you are trying to tag, it may be easiest to do on your phone. Do the at symbol like you said and put in their name, then drag your finger up to the top of the list of people who show up as results. Your friends are always listed first. Double tap on yourselection. I hope this helps.

Thank you for responding. Because I am talking about comments sections under public Facebook pages such as news and entertainment sites, the people I would be tagging would largely be strangers. Do you know if preferential treatment is given toward others who are replying in the section? Like, with these be the names at the top of the search results list?
