How do you get emails to automatically download when using the native email app?

I am using voiceover on an iPhone 11 and would like to set up so that my emails automatically download. I can't see how I can do that. I have a gmail account.
I'm confused. What else happens other than the behavior you describe? Do you open the app manually and not see new e-mails, or would you like to be able to see how many unread e-mails you have in real-time even without opening the app, which is not happening now?
My only suggestions thus far are to make sure that celuar data usage is enabled for the Mail app, and that your mail accounts delivery schedule is set to push notifications. That is done via Settings, either the mail pane or the notifications one when you drill down to Mail, I'm not exactly sure off the top of my head.

I have two check for emails manually I can’t get them to automatically download as they come in to my inbox.so every so often I have to open up my email inbox just to check whether I have received any new emails.
Hi. Here's how you can get emails automatically coming in. Go to settings, passwords & accounts them mail. Then go 2 where it says fetch new data (insert time). Click on this & you can choose automatically, every hour and if I'm remembering right, every 30 Min. but tap on automatically.
Also, if you have Gmail, your fetch new data setting will automatically be set to push. That's for apps/services that don't won't or can't use the regular method of getting notifications to you. Gmail is 1 of them. Also, if you don't see what you're looking for in passwords & accounts mail, then go to the mail settings (settings, mail).
I had 2 do manual checks in Ios. 9, which every one thought was odd, because you were suposed to be able to do it. But, once I got to Ios. 10, I started getting emails automatically which is what I wanted. And I didn't have 2 change anything, but I went 2 settings & started looking around, trying 2 find the setting, because I'm such a tech nerd. lol

Just change your emaill settings to push, this will result in your mail server continuosly check for new and incoming mail,
