I have an ipod touch 5gen running ios 8.4. Back when I set up my gmail account on my IPhone back when I was running ios6 back in the day that I don't remember I was some how able to fix my gmail account so it only will download the new messages and not all of my gmail messages that I already read. I can't get my ipod to do this, I looked in the mail settings for a setting but can't find anything. Is this something that I need to fix on the gmail site itself? Like I said it's been a few years since I put gmail on my IPhone so I can't remember how I fixed it.
