Hi all,
Well, following the demise of my SE2020 (as well as the expiry of its warranty) I have come over to the dark side and joined you Face IDers. I now have an iPhone 13 and while I remain a Touch ID purist I can tolerate Face ID in the character of a reasonable albeit slightly unreliable ally. But since this change I have three issues and i can't work out what's causing them. None of them is a deal-breaker but I'd like to put them right if possible:
1. Upon restart, Voiceover appears as Samantha. I do not know why. I have never used Samantha in my life except where you have to at the very beginning of an iPhone setup process. Our passing acquaintance has never encouraged me to build our relationship beyond that enforced preliminary. anyway, this happens every time I restart the iPhone. Normal service can be resumed but only by turning off and restarting Voiceover with the accessibility shortcut. Hardly the end of the world, but why is this?
2. The locked screen behaviour seems very strange. it seems the iPhone can be woken up by touching the screen or something similar. What I mean is the screen will wake up at times without my having pressed the power button. I have turned off raise to wake in the display settings which helped a bit but didn't resolve the issue entirely. Again, not the end of the world but I would like the iPhone only to wake when the power button is pressed. Or is this a byproduct of being in uneasy coalition with Face ID?
3. My alert sounds are much, much quieter on the iPhone 13 than on previous models. My sighted partner doesn't have this problem - hers are fine - but I do. Audio ducking is turned off so that isn't the issue. sound volume is set at 100% and can't be altered by the volume buttons.
4. This is related to 3 - the ringer is a partial exception to my sounds problem. It starts off loud as one would expect but a couple of seconds in the iPhone turns it right down. how do I explain this? well, it's a bit like a drunk person who suddenly realises they're talking very loudly in, say, a church, whereupon they go from one extreme to the other. Again, not the end of the world but why?
If anyone has any ideas it would be really helpful. i also had a nightmare of a time pairing my Watch series 4, incidentally, and had to set the thing up new.

1. Not shure about that one…
1. Not shure about that one. Try deleting and redownloading your preferred voice.
2. Go to settings/accessibility, under Fysical and Motor choose Touch / tap to wake = off.
3 and 4: The phone lowers volume of ring and alerts when it knows you’re using / watching it. Turn off attention awareness in Face ID settings.
Thank you
That's really helpful, thank you. the tap to wake thing completely passed me by but since disabling that everything is as it should be so that's a great help. I wil also try the attention awareness thing - knew it had to be something to do with Face ID! As to samantha I actually slightly misled you - this started happening on my old SE2020 about a week ago too. it continued to happen, whatever reset or restore I did. Guess I can live withh it - I don't envisage restarting the phone all that often anyway. Thanks again.
