Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a frustrating experience I’ve been having with Facebook and Instagram — and also ask for advice on how to escalate it effectively.
As a totally blind user, I rely completely on VoiceOver and notifications to know when people I follow post updates. Recently, I’ve been missing posts from my favorite artists, including Madilyn Bailey and Lauren Alvarez, who usually only respond to the very first comments people leave, effectively shutting me out. Facebook’s and Instagram’s systems honestly don’t reliably alert me. Even when notifications are turned on, I sometimes miss posts entirely. On Facebook, you even have to manually “pull to refresh” the feed, which makes it nearly impossible for blind users to stay up to date.
I’ve also heard about iOS Screen Recognition, which can detect visual updates. I’m wondering: if I turn this on, will VoiceOver automatically announce a new post as soon as it goes live — essentially bypassing the unreliable notification system — or is it still necessary to rely on alerts that don’t always work? Any experiences from other blind users would be extremely helpful.
Here’s some context about my Facebook situation:
My Facebook account was disabled on April 25, 2025, without warning or explanation. The only thing "bad" per se was the fact that I was protesting, in allcaps, about how bad the notifications are, and that I hate the fact that I keep missing posts despite all efforts.
I received a message saying I cannot request another review, which felt like an outright denial of access.
I reached out to the NFB Legal team, but they replied that they currently do not have an attorney available to take this on, and suggested I contact my state affiliate or CENA team.
I’m honestly unsure how to proceed from here or how to get Meta to hear a blind user’s concerns directly.
I want to make it clear that this is not about any particular artist — it’s about systemic accessibility failures that disproportionately impact blind users. Sighted users can passively see updates, but blind users rely entirely on alerts, so this is inherently ableist.
I’m hoping to:
1. Restore my Facebook account.
2. Ensure reliable notifications for both Facebook and Instagram.
3. Possibly bring attention to the broader accessibility failure, so that Meta addresses it properly.
So far, I've heard on Reddit that if you actually send a physical snailmail letter to Meta's headquarters, you're very likely to get your account back. If anyone would like to read the draft of the letter I have so far to strengthen my case, I'd be happy to share it.
Has anyone faced similar challenges, especially with Instagram or iOS Screen Recognition? Any advice on how to escalate this effectively — either through NFB, state affiliates, or directly to Meta — would be greatly appreciated. I'm from Michigan by the way.
Thanks so much for reading, and for any help you can offer.
Michael
