Ending Calls on iPhone 6 Using Lock Button

Hi all,

I’ve just moved to using an iFone 6 with OS 8.2. One of the first things I realised was that I can’t end calls using the lock button as I could do with my iFone 5.

I went to my local Apple store to see if they could shed some light on the problem; they tested it and worked out that the phone had to be away from the ear for it to end the call. Of course when doing their testing, they weren’t using voiceover.

I went home and tested this for myself, while using voiceover, but nothing. When I took the phone away from my ear, it converted to the speaker, so the lock button merely locked the screen and didn’t end the call. Next to my ear, it did absolutely nothing.

I’m therefore back at square 1 and would appreciate some help. Is there something I’m not doing right? Or is it my phone that’s faulty? I’ve tried this for
hours and nothing. Any help would be gratefully received.

hi. it's not ended calls for me, ever since about iOS 3 or 4. mind you, i don't want it to, either. i like being able to lock my screen while on a long call. but yeah. it's not done it for me for some time.

This is an IOS 8/IPhone 6 problem because I saw the problem come up only after getting IPhone 6. In fact, this might be a hardware problem, not a software problem.

I've never been able to get this to work on my iPhone 5. It didn't work with iOS 6 or 7, and my guess is probably not 8 either. I've heard of a few people who had luck with this, and I have no idea why some do and some don't. But for me, no matter what I tried, it hasn't worked.

Given that locking the iPhone is far less likely to end calls in IOS 8, and given that when I tried to end a call last week with a two-finger double-tap using my new iPhone 6 that didn't work either, what should we now do to end calls? As far as I could tell, pressing the Lock button ended the call for me last week when a two-finger double-tap wouldn't, but, if there's any other solution, please let us know.

You can also double tap the end call button.

If you don't have headphones on, finding the end button is almost impossible without having Voiceover ramble in someone else's ear. There has to be a cleaner way of ending calls without using headphones.

So to recap everyone’s comments, there is no fool proof way of ending calls on an iFone 6 using iOs 8. As some have said, you can use the end call button, but that is pretty hit and miss using Voiceover.

Everyone, this isn’t good enough. May I suggest we each raise this with our local Apple stores and get them to look into it? Maybe the combined pressure from all of us will encourage Apple to come up with a viable solution. After all, if a sighted person had found a bug in something, they’d shout about it until the cows came home. We ought not to let this lie and get Apple to do something.

I didn't know it was possible to end a call using the lock button. I've just tried it out and it works if you disable voice over by doing a triple press of the home button once you've double tapped to make a call. you can then press the lock button to end the call and restart voiceover. It also means the speaker isn't turned on when you move the phone away from your ear which I find v annoying.

I don't know if this has changed, but I have tested this before on previous versions of the iPhone and VoiceOver is not tramsmitted over the call as you would expect. The technology that filters out the other person's voice as it comes from your speakerphone so that it doesn't echo back into their ears I believe is the same technology that prevents the VoiceOver sounds from being sent over the phone as well. Just an FYI....finding the end button might not be as annoying to the other caller as you might think. I don't believe they hear it.

My family has a number of iPhone 5. We all have the same problem, namely you're on a call and you inadvertently hit the red button and it ends the call. How do you lock the phone so you won't hang up accidentally? Thanks

It's a bug I reported to apple about April of this year. they have not fixed it, or won't. Actually I brought this up in a thread which can be found here apparently apple have not fixed this, and won't if no one else reports it.

Hmm, that's odd, I just looked through my crystal ball, and it has not yet been solved. Keep submitting that feedback to apple.

Take care.
