I’m please to announce that clubhouse now has voiceover support. They’ve been super receptive to accessibility. I haven’t been able to try everything yet but the core functionality of the app fully supports voiceover. Big shout out to the devs.

It’s an audio only social media platform where people can set up private and public rooms to talk about pretty much anything. If you know somebody that may have it ask them if they’d send you an invite.

I have really enjoyed lurking in conversations connecting with others who share my interests and as far as my contacts go, there's nothing in there that's really private anyway. Mostly I have coworkers who are public employees with work phone numbers you can find online anyway.
But there are a few voiceOver glitches which actually have wider appeal than just the clubhouse app. For one thing, clubhouse has lots of trainings, and since it is audio only, the trainers explain what to tap on and how the screens are laid out. It all should be pretty accessible. Except the button labels don't correspond to what the trainers are telling us to tap. For example you're supposed to tap on the "calendar" icon. Well there's nothing labeled "calendar". There's a button labeled "bulletin" which is probably it, but there are other buttons as well.
For another example, we're often told to click on the gear icon or the three dots. I think we need some sort of translation -- possibly an applevis article that explains what sighted people commonly call icons as opposed to what voiceover calls them.
I'm not sure this is the fault of the developers -- it's more of a documentation thing. If in fact the button is typically referred to as a calendar, then it should be labeled so. If it is in fact called bulletin by the developers, then the trainers need to use the same terminology.
My other issue with Clubhouse is when you're reading a long list of rooms there is no heading navigation or easy way to skip all the photos of people "photo of john doe", "photo of jane smith", etc. in order to move forward to read the next event. It's very tedious.
Someone in a room I was just listening to said "blind people expect all accessibility bugs to be fixed immediately" and they are right; we can be more demanding rather than appreciative. And I do appreciate the work that went in to making Clubhouse accessible. I just whish there was an easy way to give them feedback like this, so these issues too could be on the to-do list for fixes!
