As much as i wish it were otherwise, we live in a world where taking pictures, sending them, etc. is the norm. it's the way our sighted piers, family and colleagues communicate these days.
to that end, is there a book that teaches blind people how to use the camera on their iPhone to get the consistent shots we need, even if we cannot see what's going on?

We have a feedback loop. It isn't perfect, it makes stuff up, but at least we have a way of approximating what we have shot.

A pet theory of mine is that the head-mounted glasses based cameras might be easier to use and they may give better results. I'm using my Meta Ray-Ban every day, to 'look' at things, but I'm not up to sharing photos of my lunch yet!

I did use them to take a photo of long black cat, the friend I sent it to seemed happy with it.

There is one done by a lady. I think her name is Judie or Julie. She is the lady who always got invited to the podcast by J Mosen after Apple did their event. The one that Heidi also describe what apple showed.

There you go. That is her.

I read the Access World review, and though it mentions video here and there, it really hammered on pictures. I'm actually way more interested in video, for uploading stuff about instruments to Youtube, probably. How well does it cover that, anybody know?

In two volumes seems both to much and not enough if it is aimed at bline people.

If you have been blind all your life, what do you think a photograph is? That is actually a very hard question to anser. I might have to get the book just to see what it says.

I looked on bookshare and kindle and can't find that book by Judy Dixon. It is definitely something I want to read.

And I am none-the-wiser as to who this book is for. Still, I'm glad it is there for those who need it.

If you look just past the description, the second thing in the table of contents is "VoiceOver Focus ".

Damn, this book is expensive! :D

During the height of the COVID pandemic, I was living back here at my parents' 2-flat and NBP offered some of these books for free. So I took advantage of that, and then my mother ordered me one of Judy's other books for my birthday the next year. I couldn't get them to read properly with speech, but now that I have one of the eReaders from NLS I'm going to try it out again. This actually came up yesterday when my parents and my sisters were going through photos featuring a family member who just passed away. I've tried using the photo and camera apps on my iPhone with VoiceOver, but they're still a bit daunting. I mean, the fact alone that these visual apps even work with VoiceOver is something which I've yet to fully grasp. My brother--who is also a VoiceOver user--is pretty efficient with them though so perhaps when he flies in for the service he can help me out a bit. He is an iPhone user, but does not own a Mac.

She is blind and I heard J Mosen talking about it. I think she updated her book. If you are interested in taking pictures get it and if is not what you are looking, ask for your money back. Life is easy do not complicate it.

I actually find photography and camera stuff fascinating. Just the way you can tweak reality with angles, distance, lighting.

I ordered and used Judy Dixon's book years ago. glad she updated it. As for taking pics, i'm one of the most visual people. i want to know the color of the car i bought, the dress I wear, if a guy's looking at me or my anatomy rather then paying attention. I grew up with sighted brothers and family so I see no difference. I know blind people who record Everything and it's creepy AF and not my deal. I'll check into the updated version of her book.

By Khomus on Monday, October 21, 2024 - 08:34

In the review, it says she had a photographer friend help her with the pictures. Not so much taking them or setting them up, but in critiquing them and pointing out where changes could be made. So it sounds like she did her best to figure stuff out.

It's funny that you find blind people who "record everything" "creepy AF". Curious if you find sighted folks taking a bunch of pictures to be equally creepy.

In any case, if I,as a dude born totally blind, (OK with light perception but still), take some pictures, and you think they're all kinds of screwed up because I don't know what I'm doing, great. You know what the solution is? Don't look at my messed up pictures. Nobody's forcing you to.

By The Blind AI on Monday, October 21, 2024 - 08:34

Wow! So she is blind and got someone else to check the photographs, cool. I don't have a problem wiht that, it is a visual world.

That's why I love BeMyAI so much!

By Holger Fiallo on Monday, October 21, 2024 - 08:34

I still consider my self visual. I like to wear nice colors and know what colors ladies friends wear. Love dark rose and wine and dark blue. Green does not work with my skin color.

Will have to look into these books. Having said that, and reading some of the comments here, do you think there will ever be an AI designed specifically for helping the blind take photos?

By Siobhan on Monday, October 21, 2024 - 08:34

My only issue with AI in general, and this comes down to descriptions, not Chat GPT or whatever you use. It will say something like "it's probably from the tropical region." There's not humanness to it, knowing somehow intellect. I can't explain it well, just knowing that someone took the time to do this, instead of AI getting crap from Google then giving out spit back details. If I wanted to know what you did, I'd google search. AI does it, and all you guys are over the moon. Gimme a real person is describing it. As for asking if i think sighted people taking pics is creepy? No. Showing your boos off to everyone, is tacky. Also, this has nothing to do with the elections but thanks for showing your true self. Appreciate it. Now off to do better things. ;):)

As always, you are utterly adorable.

Never change. 👌

So I'm not sure of the true self of which you speak. We have an unexpected snap election here in Japan. It's been a big year for democracy around the world - with almost 2 billion people voting.

I saw a comment on Mastodon, about me as it turns out, from a writer of huge alt text. He said there are some blind people who, instead of the simple factual breif descriptions most people write, would rather have somethign written by an AI that gives them additional 'whimsical entertainment' that's me.

I'm waiting for that! Is more than possible once we have live feed integration. Your AI can just guide you as to how to position to capture the best possible shot. Part of the next frontier that we're about to breech if you ask me...
Come to think of it, We don't even need a specific module for it. Once one of your major LLMs have visual capabilities, you just need to tell it that you're blind and that it needs to help you take a good picture...?
