Hello all. Is it better to install a new IOS over an old one or to do a clean install. I know clean installs work better for computers so wondered if that were the case for say an IPad or IPhone? If it is better to do a clean install what are the steps someone should take to do that aside from backing up the device?

There is no need to do a clean install. iOS was made to be installed to replace the previous version. As you said, make sure you have a complete backup, either on your computer or iCloud. The easiest way to install it is to make sure your phone is plugged in. Then, open Settings, General, Software Update. The steps to download and install are self-explanatory. Be warned though. These first few days, you're probably going to have really long download times. It took me over three hours today. Good luck.

I tried twice to dowkload IOS8 on my iPad ,iPod 5th generation and my iPhone 5. Says it will take 14 hours and the says there has been an error and have to start over. All devices are plugged into power and have strong wifi. I do not have a PC to connect to. So what does anyone know of the problem?

Is it best to do an update through iTunes or OTA? I usually do small updates e.g. IOS 7.0 to 7.0.1 over the air, but is it best to do it over iTunes for a major one like this? I have an iPhone 5

With the size of this download it is probably better to do this via ITunes. Just remember there are probably still a lot of people getting it so it may take time. I updated my IPad earlier this morning and it took about 45 minutes to download. The update went well.

I finally gave up last night after 4 failures. Tried my iPod this morning and it failed immediately. Guess I will wait until I hear back from apple if I ever do. What a pain in the neck. My wife's phone updated in an hour and so did her Mack but her iPod is like mine a no go.
