Anyone else having problems with the Dropbox app constantly crashing?

I wanted to organise some files in my dropbox today, but the app kept crashing every time I activated the files tab and moved VO focus into the list of files and folders. Is anyone else having this problem? I only noticed this just now, but I don't launch the dropbox app very often so I don't know how long it's been an issue. I do know there was an update a couple of days ago, though, so that might have been when it started.

And I have exactly the same problem after the last upgrade of the Dropbox.
Maybe we should inform the developers.

Dropbox has suddenly started crashing on me as well. I have been using FileBrowser to get things done, but prefer the speed of searches in the Dropbox app. It does appear to be time to alert the developer.

I'm really glad you brought this up. I generally assume that I have changed something and need to track it down before sending in my concern.

I've already sent a bug report detailing this issue. I suggest those of you who're having this problem do the same.

By Morgan Watkins on Sunday, February 26, 2017 - 13:33

I have found that as long as you do not try to get into your Dropbox files, you can still successfully report a bug from the Dropbox iPhone app.

Here goes...

Open the Dropbox app on your iPhone.
Click on the Recent tab.

Now, click on the Settings button at the top of the screen.

Near the bottom of the screen, click on the "Send Feedback" button.

Now, a few items down is a Report a bug" button. Give it a click.

Type in as much detail as you can about what happens to you. Do mention that you use VoiceOver. I documented my observations about the crashing and included my contact info, just in case they want to do some follow-up.

Just my two cents,

Morgan

Disclaimer, perhaps: I am making the assumption that the Dropbox app bug reporter is actually successfully sending the feedback. I suspect it is working, but we do know that a bug is in there somewhere. Good luck!

Odd. I got an actual person when I submitted mine and they said they're looking into the issue. I clicked the bug report button as well, so yeah.

Thanks for recommending FileBrowser, and for the bug reporting instructions. I reported the bug, and included a link to this thread in my message. I received the following in reply:

I take it that's an automated reply, but I hope they've been reading our bug reports. I downloaded FileBrowser and it's been working well, but as I'm doing a major reorganisation of my files, I decided it would be quicker and easier to do it on my Windows laptop. Still, I hope they manage to resolve the iOS bug soon.

I noticed it kept crashing days ago. I thought it was my phone so I restarted it, still the same thing. I've had little success with dropbox support and i'm paying for it. I'll look in to submitting through the app as well, as I thought it was just my phone. Hopefully they'll fix this one. With voiceover off, it seems to be fine, I see it scrolling fine, so it is definitely something with voiceover. Strange.

Another thing you can do is get ahold of them on twitter. Their username is @dropbox support. They usually recommend that you write to them at http://www.dropbox.com/support, and then send them a dm and tell them your username and they should follow up with you about the issue. I'm using Windows 10 so this doesn't effect me at all. I'm sorry that Mac users seem to be having this issue with the app crashing a lot. I know if it was me i'd be frustrated too.

I thought we were talking about the IOS app? I'm not having any issues in windows except where you open the menu, and you have to press enter a second time just to get at options, as it pops one up, but thats all I have.

By Toonhead on Sunday, February 26, 2017 - 13:33

I've never had the iPhone app crash either. You guys having this issue, you're talking about the mac app, right? Windows and iOS users, at least for me aren't having a single issue. it runs as smooth as silk.

By Lysette Chaproniere on Sunday, February 26, 2017 - 13:33

No, I was talking about the iPhone app. Strange that you're not having the same issues, Toonhead.

Toonhead,
For me, the IOS app is crashing, thats all I have besides the windows app. It crashes with voice over on, even if I don't move focus but I tap on the recent files to see whats changed. it reads, then crashes. I submitted a report through the app.

For me, Dropbox is crashing on my iPhone. I have a 6S Plus, 128GB, running iOS 10.2.1 with the latest Dropbox app installed. I also use FileBrowser for Business and it is still working fine. When functional, the Dropbox app does some things better than FileBrowser, so I am looking forward to the iOS Dropbox app being repaired soon.

Cheers,

Morgan

I don't use a Mac, and currently have no problems using Dropbox on Windows: in my case, as for several others here, Dropbox is crashing in the IOS app. Besides having Dropbox on Windows, I use the Dropbox app on my 64 GB iPhone 6 running IOS 10.2.1 with VoiceOver. Interestingly, I can go into most of the Dropbox tabs in the app without them crashing, but, if I double-tap the Files tab, the app crashes after a few seconds; As the Files tab is the one I open most in the Dropbox IOS app, I hope this bug can be fixed soon.

By Toonhead on Sunday, February 26, 2017 - 13:33

Ok, I see what you guys are talking about now. Here's what happens for me. 1. I open the dropbox app. 2. I go to the recents tab, and swipe to the right past the "search your files edit box. Then, wouldn't you know it, the app crashes. Well hot damn. I'll definitely send em a report about this, it's definitely a bug. Thanks for the clarification guys!

Thats exactly what I experience, although I can go to the files tab, and when I touch there, same thing. I submitted my report, hopefully they'll fix this one. Can't do anything with the app in this instance.

By kjw810 on Sunday, February 26, 2017 - 13:33

I'm having the same exact problem. I really hope they fix it because I use dropbox on my phone a lot. The update before this one made some changes that I loved with the search feature. I noticed this starting on the 25th of February, and it was just fine before that.

Hi.. Have the same issue as everyone on the Dropbox iOS app. Same issues on iPhone 6s and iPad pro 9.7. Going to send them feedback. Thanks.

Hi Jared,

Thank you for writing in to us at Dropbox with your issue today.

The Dropbox mobile app on iOS is compatible with VoiceOver. As a result, in order to troubleshoot this accessibility issue, I’ll need you to provide as much of the following information as you can with as much detail as you can.

We will use this information to help our specialist team investigate and establish the cause of the behavior.

1. Please provide the step by step process you follow to get the error in question. Provide as many steps as possible.

2. What system are you using? (for example Mac OSX El Capitan version 10.11.5)

3. What accessibility software are you using? (for example VoiceOver on Mac)

4. Any other information you think might be relevant.

Once I have this information, I will escalate it to our specialist team. Thanks in advance for your response.

Kind Regards,
Thomas

Feedback:
I am having a problem with the app when using voice over and scrolling with the app to find something. Sometimes it will happen just by touching parts of the screen. With Voiceover turned off, it seems to work fine, but I need voice over as I'm a visually impaired phone user. I recently got the latest version of the app and I think that is when it started. Any assistance would be great on knowing if the team knows about it or what the status is. Thanks. Jared.

Hi everyone,

DB support answered me last night that they are working on having this bug with VO fixed in the next update.

By J.R. on Sunday, February 26, 2017 - 13:33

In reply to by Maya Pureseva

They asked me to restart the app, and gave me instructions to do this. My apps are closed once not being used. Already done. Passed that feedback on. Nice to see that they're looking in to it.

By Joseph on Sunday, February 26, 2017 - 13:33

Same hre. I also told them that I restarted the phone as well (which I did) and got nothing. so yeah.

Hi all,

I'm getting the same crash but I have found a solution sort of. If you know the file you want an type it in the search, You are able to access the specific file that way. At least that has worked for me.

By Ather on Sunday, February 26, 2017 - 13:33

It also seems to crash when I use it to import books and things to other apps like bard mobile. Has anyone else experienced this issue? It pretty much just crashes in the final stage of the importing process.

In Norway we have a Facebook Group called "App-løftet" (something like App improvements in English). I and others have also reported the Dropbox bug:

If VoiceOver (screen reader) is active, Dropbox crash when tapping / touching the screen. The "Recent files" pane works as expected, but e. g. when selecting the Files-pane, Dropox crash imidiatelly when trying to select a file (touching the files area). I’ve tried to show this in a video:

I've experienced this bug too on the Dropbox iOS app on both my iPhone 7 and iPad Air. I believe it's Dropbox version 36.2.2.

1. I tap on the Files tab.
2. As I have both a personal and a business account, I can then see two buttons: one for my personal files and one for my business files.
3. If I double tap on either the personal or business button with VoiceOver enabled, the app crashes.
4. However, instead of step 3 above, if I turn off VoiceOver before doing a single tap on the personal or business buttons, it opens to display the corresponding Dropbox folder/files without issue.
5. After step 4, if I then turn on VoiceOver, nothing happens.
6. But if after step 5, I then try touch any of the files, the app crashes.

I've tried force quitting the app and opening it again. I've tried restarting my device. I've tried deleting the Dropbox app and reinstalling it. But after each and all of these I experience the same issue.

Hello folks,

On the 9th of February, I asked dropbox what caused the issue we were all experiencing, and they responded on this day.

Antonio, Mar 9, 7:16 AM PST:

Hi Jared,

Thanks for your reply. The issue was caused by a recent change we made to the underlying code that displays files and folders in the "Files" and "Recents" tab.

We were able to also push an updated version (v38.3) to the App Store that contains this fix.

Thank you again for your patience, and if there's anything else we can do, let us know!

Cheers,
Antonio

This should now be fixed with the latest release. We did great, and hopefully, they'll be aware for the next time.

Correction, I meant march, not february. I actually sent the enquiry the day before, and got a response on 3/9. Sorry about that.
