Seeking Feedback on Access Darts

Hi All,

I'd appreciate feedback on Access Darts for iOS - it's a new game just out this week based on standard pub darts. It's a graphical game developed for Switch Users, but I've built an audio layer from the start for VI users. It self voices (English only) and provides additional audio cues for play timing.

I'm interested in feedback on making it immediately playable so would appreciate feedback on how obvious game play & help is from the start - with only the information that you need to toggle VoiceOver off after starting as all controls are graphical. It's controlled mostly with a single tap.

A little additional Info.

Visually the game screen shows a standard dartboard. Initially a dart circles the board clockwise until the screen is tapped to choose the slice it's hovering over. Once a slice is chosen the dart moves only in that slice - going from the bull to the outside border of the board repeatedly until a second tap throws the dart.

If Sonar is on there's a long beep as the dart enters the inner bull, a fast three-tone beep as it enters the treble and two double beeps as the dart enters the double on leaving the board and then again (almost immediately) as it re-enters from the edge of the board. The sound corresponds with the moment of entry, so it's important to predict rather than re-act as movement is quite fast even at the slowest game speed. When speed is slow Sonar announces the actual slice numbers in the first stage. Once normal or fast speed is chosen rising and falling tones denote the slices which is more tricky unless you really know a dart board layout!

In the main iOS Settings app there are some options which can be set before the game is started - these include forcing speech all the time (recommended), forcing scanning all the time (means all options are stepped through sequentially, rather than needing to be tapped directly) and legacy switch support (this last mode also means you can also control the game from a bluetooth keyboard, although doing so is annoyingly laggy compared to a screen tap).

I'm using Apple's native controls (ie VoiceOver needs to be toggled back on) for the Game Center stuff - at the moment that's just leaderboards and challenges - but if the game gets interest I'll also look at live two player networked games. Two players games at the moment have to be played on the same device.

All 15 promos are now used. Note to downloaders - these promo versions get future updates etc just as if you've bought them, but to prevent promotion abuse, Apple won't allow you to leave a rating or review on iTunes.

If you'd rather feedback privately than here you can email feedback to simon@cognable.com - my other details are on my applevis profile. Thanks. Simon

I just redeemed one of the codes for this game, and it's a great game. I would be very much interested into player mode so we can play on different devices. However, for somebody who is new at darts, could you maybe have a section in the game to explain the rules? This is my first time ever playing darts. Also, I don't understand the things in the game such as flat tires, what are those supposed to be?

Flat Tyre is slang for the zero score, black border which surrounds the main dart board - you're right of course about explaining the rules!

I'm also confused when it says something like I threw a small 19. What exactly does that mean? That is a bit confusing to me.

The points value is the same, but the 19 portion on a dart board between the treble and the bull is known as 'small 19' and the portion between the treble and double is 'big 19' (this reflects the physical size on the board). The commentary only makes this distinction when Sonar is on. It's just intended to aid in judging where the dart fell - mostly which side of the treble your dart fell on when you're aiming for that - whether you tapped too early or too late. When the bot is playing (or if Sonar is off) it just reports the score.

This is a cool game what is it doing when it's saying all the numbers at random before you get ready to shoot? That kind of confuses me.

The numbers are actually in standard board order. I guess I should know why they are arranged in that illogical sequence, but I'm afraid I don't for certain. Theoretically it cuts down the score of random throwers, but that's not really correct mathematically, so I think it's as much about tradition.

20 is at the 12 o'clock position, 3 is at the 6 o'clock position, 6 is at the 3 o'clock position and 11 is at the nine o'clock position. Although as there are 20 slices in total - a pizza is probably a better model than a clock. Hit the crust and you're in the double score ring, hit dead centre for the bull whatever slice you're on and hit half-way between the bull and the crust and you're in the treble score ring.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Hi,

I'm working on the app store video this week and will release a version of that with audio description and as an mp3. I've been focussed on the app updates but there is a support site emerging with a little help - https://darts.cognable.com

Curtis Jackson grabbed one of the AppleVis promo codes and has kindly done this podcast review
