iOS and iPadOS Gaming

Good morning everybody,
I’ve been working on a new iPhone-iPad game called Westopia and I’m glad to announce that I have finally something to show you!

The game is almost finished but before releasing it in the AppStore, I’ve decided to show it to those of you that want help me to improve the game experience overall.
There are some little issues that have to be corrected, I would like to adjust also the difficulty of the game.

The game has passed already the Apple control and is ready to be downloaded via TestFlight. TestFlight is an Apple App that allows testing the game only by following the instructions from this link:

https://testflight.apple.com/join/hoRi2HrS

The test are available for everybody and are 100% anonymous and don’t have any direct contact with me. Your suggestions can be made via the TestFlight App or emailing me to fruitpot@icloud.com
The idea is to weekly release new test versions with all the improvements that you suggest; and hopefully in a few weeks release the AppStore version.

Thanks in advance for those of you that will test the game, and thank all off you for your patience.
The introduction to the game is the following:
Westopia is the name of a small town in the Old West, where sometimes, the outlaws try to steal from the citizens.
Your goal is to fight the bandits to make them leave the town.
The game is a crossover between a boxing or street fights game and a heroes card game.
On every level you get around six different hero cards, each one with their power, speed, brains and stamina.
Then you fight the group of bandits, the combats are one against one and you have to select an adequate card for each bandit.
Anytime you can tag another fighter, as can the bandits.
No internet connection or login is needed.
This game is 100% accessible with voiceOver.

I'm glad you're back in the loop of things. Downloading this now.

By Igna Triay on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Hi, I'll test it out and give you my feedback

By alex wallis on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

I have already written in with feedback, its an interesting game but I had no idea what on earth I was doing, biggest thing it needs is a proper structured tutorial to explain game basics. also my x got quite hot when I was playing.

By Eduardo FruitPot on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Thanks to all the testers! That's a summary of the more relevant issues you've found, and I'll try to fix them asap.
1. After finishing the battle the buttons have weird labels.
2. Close buttons on certain dialogs, do not respond to double-taps.
3. A proper tutorial is missing.
4. Inside Tag Team, increase the Skills and add fighters doesn't work with VoiceOver.

By Ishkabibble on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Hello,

I downloaded the beta version a few minutes ago and have some preliminary feedback. This is a great game with good execution, but a few things could be improved:
1. The story-writing could be more polished. I was really confused about Banana Alley and Arnold. I could somewhat understand what was happening at that part (Arnold was getting attacked in Banana Alley and the player has to fight the attackers), but the wording of the narrative was clunky.
2. All game announcements such as the narrative and the welcome message are spoken with the selected Voiceover voice, but at the 50% speech rate. It would be great if the game were not self-voiced so that the story and intro could be read using the preferences selected by the user for the VoiceOver voice.

Thanks for creating another engaging game!

Sincerely,
Maddy

By Sabrina on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Really cool once I finally get the hang of it. Really great. Yeah, the close button thing is an issue.
Also, after a fight I find some strange buttons.
Not exactly sure wht I am doing since there is no tutorial.

By HarmonicaPlayer on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

downloading game asap:)

By Laura Tosetto on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Downloaded the beta and played a bit with it. Agree on all the comments above. I've encountered all the issues that others mentioned. Also, it seems that the game drains a lot of battery: it took about 20% in, say, 20 minutes of gameplay.
One more thing: I noticed that the game is partly self-voiced, but I found that during fights, it speaks with two different voices. I find this a bit confusing, as I don't understand what the different voices are supposed to mean. Also, I agree that the narrative could just be text that could be read with VoiceOver. Finally, next to the defense-attack slider in the fight screen there is a button which reads "CoachHard" which seems to do nothing when double-tapped... I don't quite understand what it's for. However, this game is interesting and has potential, and thank you for reaching out asking for feedback on accessibility.

By Ornella on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

I will download and test.

By Maranatà on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Hi, thank you very much for creating this game. Please could you add other languages? Perhaps Italian, French, Spanish and German. I ask you this because unfortunately not everyone understands English well and therefore would struggle to fully enjoy the game, adding more languages would make things easier for you. Thank you!

By roman on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

the game seems awsam to me. I will definitely try it.

By Yvonnezed on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Welcome back.

I'm having all the issues above, as well as a lot of crashes flicking through the controls. I'm using an iPad Pro if that matters at all.

By ming on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

wow! I am glad.
and I will download it soon!

By Eduardo FruitPot on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

5. All voices should be spoken by VoiceOver, in order to be able to change speed.
6. Random but frequent crashes after changing the fighter.
7. High device temperature and battery consumption.
8. Polish the automatic storyteller and sportscaster.

I'll try to fix all this issues for next's week version.
Thank you all for your kind words and your feedback.

By Maranatà on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Hello! How can I attack or defend myself during the fight? Thank you!

The fight scene looks like this: You are facing the bandit (man or woman), who is wearing some kind of mask or a bandana and maybe a hat. The bandit is standing in front of you with his arms in position of defense, with his elbows bended and his fists covering his face, until he throws a punch or slaps or kicks. On the bottom of the screen your closed fists move vertically covering more or less the surface of the screen that represents your body. Your body is only shown when you are hit. When your fighter punches or kicks the bandit, he loses his hat or mask and shows pain gestures.
There are two fighting modes: fighter and coach. In the fighter mode you move a joystick and have to aim at the head of the moving opponent, on the coach mode you are the coach of the fighters. Only this mode is enabled with VoiceOver and it works as follows.
During the fight you should watch two things
1. Your card should have similar values (power, brains, speed and stamina) as your opponent. You can change your cards and tag another fighter.
2. The defend-attack slider works as follows. 0 percent is low attack and big in defense, that means that your fighter has his fists covering his face often and sometimes throws a powerful punch or a punch combination. The 100 percent is big attack and low defense, that means that your fighter is constantly throwing little punches but protects poorly.

Trick, for the moment, until the difficulty is tuned, I think 100 percent attack works better.
If you get some hardware supply you can throw it to the bandit and make it confuse for some seconds and hit him or cause him direct K.O.
The throw hardware button is wrong labeled, but next week many of these problems will be solved and little by little, the game will be 100% accessible and 100% fun. Please have some patience.

By ming on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

I think the fighter mode also can use some gestures. to play it!
looking forward to play it more!

By Hannes on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Hi i have played the game it is pretty good I can not wait to see how you improve it.

Thank you all. Have a nice day.

By Eduardo FruitPot on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

This third beta version comes with fewer bugs and two big new additions:
1. When VoiceOver is activated, You will find a detailed description of every fighter inside the Supplies Tag team button and, during the battle, in the tag fighters selector
2. There’s a new combat mode based on gestures. Instructions to use this mode are not in the app for now, that's why I've attached them in the next lines.

Instructions to use te gesture controls mode.
To activate this mode, you should pick it in the Settings, by tapping the control options button.
Once in the fight, you’ll find the top bar buttons, fighter, bandit and menu but there’s no joystick, hit buttons or attacker slider. Only a square in the center of the screen that covers the whole width in iPhones and around two thirds in iPads.
This square detects the following gestures with one finger, long press, tap and drag. Long press moves the fists to defend your fighter, tap prepare for new drag action, dragging gestures punch, kick and throw hardware and make combos.
Imagine the square divided in nine equal keys, like a phone keyboard. 1,2,3 in the upper row, 4,5,6 in the middle and 7,8,9 in the lower. Yo can draw the following gestures:
1. The long press in the upper left columns (1,4,7) moves the left defensive fist, the central both and the right only the right fist. The upper the row the higher the defense.
2. When tapping you can start a new drag gesture and, when VoiceOver is activated, you get the number of the tapped key. The drag actions are experimental, and might change. For the moment you can try te following:
3. Drag 1,4,7,4,1 repeatedly to punch from the left and 3,6,9,6,3 to punch from the right. You can also move horizontally 7,8,9,8,7 to hit repeatedly.
4. Kick gestures are L shaped: 1,4,7,8,9 or 3,6,9,8,7.
5. Throw hardware is G shaped: 1,4,7,8,5.
6. Combination hits or combos are like a inverted C: 2,3,6,5 or 5,6,9,8.
- An effective combination is to move thru the square drawing a U: 1,4,7,8,9,6,3, back and forth.
The difficulty is not calibrated for now and, once you master the gestures, you will find probably easy to destroy your enemies.

By Sabrina on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

For some reason the game keeps crashing and I still have no clue how to do anything. But this mode seems awesome. The problem is that I tend to get crashes, especially when dragging.

By alex wallis on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Hi, its great to have a user manual, but the button for this should actually be called user manual not westopia, in fact why not merge this into the help button so there is one user manual option not two different buttons.
next the user manual needs to be properly broken up and made so it can be navigated by VoiceOver, at the moment when the user manual is opened that explains how to play the game its one huge block of text on a single line which makes it very difficult to read or refer to different parts if a player wants to.
I would like to see the option to actually play a practice fight where your sort of given a tour of the different functions of the game where you have like a practice fight, can practice buying stuff for it and using it etc.

By Eduardo FruitPot on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

In reply to by Sabrina

Sorry for the crashes, that's always a displeasing surprise, hopefully soon eradicated. I'll try to find why and where they occur. Thanks for your nice words.

By Eduardo FruitPot on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

In reply to by alex wallis

You are completely right on the user manual, next week will be inside the help and I'll try to make it in separated sections for Voiceover navigation. The practice fight is a very good idea but for the final version, i'm still making big changes like this new gestures mode. Thanks for your feedback.

By Hannes on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Hi i am experiencing the same problem .

By Joel on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

How do I use them?

By Eduardo FruitPot on Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 07:40

Hello there,
This fourth beta version includes two new features and some improvements.
First new feature is the option to customize your fighters, not just their skills but also their name and clothes. You will find this customization in the tag team section from supplies.
Second new feature is te option to customize your teams, there you can change the names and members of your teams.
There are improvements in the help window, settings and overall the game. Because of this changes, when installing this version, all the progress is reset.

Hopefully next version will finally come with fights between nearby devices. I wanted this to be ready for this week, but it's a tricky feature.
Despite there are not big noticeable changes, below the surface this multi device layer is already there and not finished, please excuse possible new bugs.

As always, send me your feedback to fruitpot@icloud.com.

Have a nice day!

By Sabrina on Monday, July 22, 2019 - 07:40

Do I need headphones for this?

By Eduardo FruitPot on Monday, July 22, 2019 - 07:40

No, you don’t need headphones. Some of the fight effects, sound right or left depending on the position of the fighters but your punches will usually go toward your opponent. Have a nice day.

By KE7ZUM on Monday, July 22, 2019 - 07:40

I'm just coming back to iOs. Is it too late for me to joino? If it is, that's fine, but it never hurts to ask.

Thanks so much.

P.S, it's ben a while since I dealt with test flight, 2 years in fact, so if I stumble, give me a bit of time for me to get back on the bicycle. Lol!

Of course, you are welcome to participate in the beta.
Remember to have test flight app installed first, and then click this link:
https://testflight.apple.com/join/hoRi2HrS
The beta tests are going great, the game is fully operational with some minor bugs.
Although I'm adding some features gradually that sometimes come with new bugs.
Thanks for your interest, have a nice day.

Could you Translate this game in German please?

By Eduardo FruitPot on Monday, July 22, 2019 - 07:40

In reply to by Hunter

Guten Morgen, probably in the future the game will be translated to more languages, but first, it must be finished ;)

By Joel on Thursday, August 22, 2019 - 07:40

When is the next beta test release? I’m asking because there hasn’t been a release in over a month.

By Maranatà on Thursday, August 22, 2019 - 07:40

Hello! Truly a very nice game, thanks for everything! I would however have a suggestion regarding the combat mode. Instead of drawn gestures, what do you think of creating gestures like in A blind legend? In this way it would be enough to use simple movements with a finger to the right, left, back and forth. However, even the mode of gestures you have created is just fine, but I think that a mode like in A blind legend might be easier to manage.

By Eduardo FruitPot on Thursday, August 22, 2019 - 07:40

You are right, I haven’t upload the latest improvements: fights between nearby devices, improved customization and tuned difficulty. That’s basically because after this additions, I’ve played the game and I think it needs changes regarding the the importance of the cards value in the fight. I have some improvements in mind that I want to add before the next update, that should be ready before the end of this month. Thanks for your patience and your support.

By KE7ZUM on Thursday, August 22, 2019 - 07:40

Hello. I just got a new iphone. Do I need to resign up for the beta or can I still test?

Take care and thanks.

I also reported some crashes earlier, How are those coming along in beeing fixedz

Take care and be blessed.

By alex wallis on Thursday, August 22, 2019 - 07:40

testflight should be able to remember what your signed up for, in fact the game won't reinstall over icloud, you will have to get it to do it through testflight, I think you will have to sign in but not sure on that but once you have installed testflight it should remember what your testing.

By KE7ZUM on Thursday, August 22, 2019 - 07:40

yep, I was able to test. in fact I'll be uploading my diag files from this phone later as the game I believe was able to crash.

By Eduardo FruitPot on Sunday, December 22, 2019 - 07:40

Good news!
Westopia is been renamed to "Smash the Gangs" and is ready to download on the App Store.
The game is 100% accessible by VoiceOver and should provide many hours of fun.
I would appreciate it if any of you publishes a new entry on the AppleVis App Directory to spread the word. There, I could follow the posts and answer questions and suggestions. Thanks a lot.
