Planning on getting my first iPhone; will 32GB be enough memory?

Hello Everyone,

I'm a longtime reader, but this is my first post as a new member.

I am looking at buying my first iPhone. Most likely, it will be an SE, only 32GB. Is that enough memory, or do I have to purchase the 128GB version?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi ken,
I would say it depends on what kind of apps you'd like to put on the device. If you like reading audiobooks, or playing some sorts of games that take up large amounts of space, then 32GB is not a lot of space. I'd say wait till september and see what iPhones will be released then. While I think the SE is a good option for some, it's using older hardware, thus probably won't be supported in the next few years like latest phones, iPhone 7/7 plus or the new 8/whatever will be released in the fall.
If you really want the Se, then go for it. Personally now that I've gotten used to the larger 5.5 inch 6S plus, I'm never going back to the smaller devices. Also, one thing; I don't remember if the SE has the touch ID sensor for fingerprints.

Hi Justin,

Yes, the SE has the fingerprint ID.

The newer SE versions were just released last year. Will they be that out of date so soon?

I might download BookShare books, but not much music. I'm also not all that interested in games--but that could change.

Thanks for your advice. I'm sure I'll be back for more.

Naw, the new SE probably won't be out of date for 3 years or so. I completely forgot about them updating them last year!

Hi all. I use the iPhone SE myself, and I am very satisfied with it. As the comment stated above it does have the touch ID sensor, as well as Apple Pay capabilities if you use that functionality. It sports the a nine processor chip, a 12 megapixel camera, and a battery that, for me at least, last about 6 to 8 hours. The SE will definitely be able to run iOS 11, and I would imagine even IOS 12 perhaps even iOS 13, although no one knows what technology will be out by the time that OS is released. Overall, I find the SE to be a very capable and reliable device. If the SE is what you can afford or the device you are looking at going with, then I definitely just say go for it.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the comments. They are greatly appreciated.

Now, I've just got to take the plunge and buy it. A little bit scary.

I'm sure I'll be back for more advice and help.

Ken,

In trying to save money in buying an iPhone, people often buy one with a processor years out of date and with too little memory. They then feel the need to upgrade to a better phone in two years when they could have spent more and had a phone they could have kept for four or five years. The SE currently has a processor introduced in 2015. This a9 chip will likely receive its last iOS update in 2020 and full iOS version in 2019, based on previous Apple support trends. I saw a rumor recently that Apple plans a slight update to the SE in the next month or two. If Apple upgrades the processor to the a10, it would be worth the wait to have a phone with another year of useful upgrade life.

I started with an iPhone 5 in 2012. Back then, no app seemed to be bigger than 100megabytes. Now, Facebook is more than 300 megabytes and Garage Band is 1.6 gigabytes. The highly acclaimed Nearby Explorer navigation app needs more than four gigabytes of space. I have ripped my CD collection and so have my friends. We have shared our digital music collections. I carry more than 100 albums on my iPhone that eats up about five gigabytes. Besides audio books and magazines from the library for the blind, podcasts also consume space. The beauty of the iPhone is that it is a multifunctional device that requires Internet bandwidth and device storage to maximally obtain its benefits. While you may not now envision the need for a 128 GB phone, you might be surprised how much more storage will be needed as you grow into a digital mobile lifestyle.
