Dear Applevis community,
In the recent Apple developers' conference on Tuesday the 12th, Apple debuted two new smartphones, the iPhone 8 series and iPhone X. I am writing to you all to ask for your opinion. I am currently using a LG smartphone from 4 years ago and after having, for the most part an unpleasant experience which includes poor accessibility and updating features am switching to the iPhone. I am a senior in high school and plan on going to college afterwards. Keeping this factor in mind and many of the apps for the visually impaired including voice dream reader, OCR scanners, and Blindsquare which iPhone do you believe would help me best. The iPhone 7 plus or iPhone 8 plus. I mention the iPhone 8 plus in cause of it's improved processor chip the A11 rather than the previous A10 chip. In addition would 256 gb be too much memory or is it always best to have as much storage as possible. I am aware the price difference between these devices but have worked out an discount with my carrier for the disabled. I also understand that as of now the iPhone 8 has not been released to the public yet, but I am looking for opinions before and afterward the release. Thank you and have a great day.

@Owen7668 Congratulations on being a senior in high school. IF I were you, I'd go for the 8 plus. My reasoning is that if you go for this phone and don't plan to upgrade every year or two, this phone will last you the longest in the future. Also, as apps keep getting bigger and bigger I would suggest in a year or two at most a 64 GB device just won't be able to stand up to the demands you will probably want to put on it. Therefore, if you can, I would suggest the 256 GB model. Just one man's opinion.

Congratulations on you being a senior high school student, my friend. Just like the previous poster, I agree with him and everything he has already expressed. An iPhone 8+ would no doubt be the best thing for you. That is also just my opinion.
Phone choices
If you can afford the newer iPhone 8+, go for that one, no need to get last year's technology if you can get this year's. And as others have stated, the more memory, the better, so 256gb is not a bad choice.

It would largely depend on your budget and/or how much you are willing to spend.
If you don’t want to spend much, the iPhone 7 plus is still a great phone. It’s still faster than the Notes 8 at a far lower price.
If you’re willing to spend a bit more, I would skip the 8 plus and get the X. For 200 more, you get a better screen, If you have usable vision, would help. Longer battery life. A great sensor array that uses face ID. I suspect, in a few months or so, apps will come out that will require the sensors. And folks who got the 8 will wish they got the X instead. Lastly, IOS 11 was designed for the X. I suspect some of the oddities and quirks we see now will not appear on the X.

If technology and speed are your primary concern, than I would say go for the 8+. But you could probably get a 256 gb 7+ for a $100 less than a 256 8+, so if you do wan't 256gb, that might be something to consider.
As to weather you should get 64 or 256, their is realy nothing such as too much memory. You could probably make do with 64gb (I've made do with 16gb for years despite my use of audio textbooks), but 256 will be mor comfortable.
Why pay Apple extra `storage?
Extra ram in the iphones does not come cheap, and syaing that app sizes will grow makes no sense, actually apple works on making apps an update smaller. Unless you need extreme amounts of data stored on the device, there are little reason to go over 64 gb, unless you want to make Apple happy. Consider how much you stream to the phone vs how much you want to store on it.

8+ vs. X
To begin, I want to thank everyone who has already offered their opinions and those who will in regards to this big decision. Secondly I want to comment on what a previous individual recommended. David S, while the iPhone X does have a slightly larger screen and a few more extra goodies in it's camera department, I do not see the point in spending $100 more even with the disability discount I found offered by AT&T. In addition, the iPhone X in design looks a lot like an android phone which is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I also feel cautious around the X with all it's new features, like OLED which could have future side affects causing the phone to wear out faster. Unless the rest of the community feels the same as David , I believe I couldn't easily make it by just as easily with the 8+ for the next 4 or so years.
Depends on a lot of things.
First of all, if you can't see anything, the 8 would probably do you almost as well as the 8 plus. To me, the big advantage of the 8 over the 7 is the wireless charging. Every time you plug and unplug something you are putting wear on the connector, if you could avoid that wear the unit would last longer. As far as memory goes, I have my entire music collection and a ton of apps on a 64 gb device with many books and still have a third of it free. If I was spending someone else's money, I might buy a 128gb unit, but I don't think I'd do so with mine. I started out with the 3gs, and I could type on it. I went up to larger and larger phones and now I have a 6, it is plenty big enough to type on and I don't think a larger screen makes sense since I can't see it anyway, just saying.

Agree on storage
I have to say I agree with the commenter who manages fine with a 64 GB device. I was one of these users who had to have the most storage possible, right until I went iOS only. Most of my work is in the cloud, I now use Audible books more than ever and the future's in the cloud. Having lots of storage only really applies to those with a lot of photos. App sizes will not be a real problem because of app thinning and other related technologies that Apple includes for app binaries. If you don't want to pay the extra cost, go with the 64 GB, that's what I have just done today, ordered a 64 GB iPhone 8 Plus.
The reason I suggested 256 GB
I suggested 256 GB to Owen with the thinking that if he chooses to keep his phone for many years, he will then have a chance to have lots of music, books, games, etc. stored on his phone. Personally, while the Cloud is nice, I like things to be at my fingertips whenever, including if there is no internet connection. Also, just look at the crazy way social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. are just ballooning in size. Sure you could probably get by with a 64 GB for now, but I'm thinking long term. I'm not trying to argue with those who suggest a 64 GB, but just trying to clarify my thinking. Spending a little more money now could save you more in the long run.

Hi,I didn't take your comments as argumentative at all. We all have our usecases for these devices. I am very fortunate to have more or less good cell coverage and fast internet which probably clouds my viewpoint. I have the 128 GB iPad Pro and with celular and find that to be personally enough.
I take your comments about the cloud though. For me, I rely a lot on automations and web services anyway to do a lot of my work. I suppose it depends on your needs. For me, downloading content before leaving is enough so the 64 GB size isn't really any concern. MY feeling is that streaming and cloud solutions aren't going away so why not just embrace them.
Agree that 64 GB is sufficient
I currently have an iPhone 6 with 64 GB memory and have never felt I needed more. I'm currently using about exactly half that space and I have quite a few podcasts downloaded to my phone. I have a few books and some of my music, although I mostly stream my music when I listen with my phone.
I've had this phone for more than 2 years and plan to upgrade to a 64 GB iPhone 8 this weekend. I understand the argument that one should consider the future and get more storage "just in case" but it's been my experience that technology makes such large and rapid advances that buying a phone to keep for many years may not be the best idea. I thought that also in the past, but it turns out that I find myself upgrading about every 2 years, just as I plan to do again this year. I think you could even keep your phone for 3 or 4 years, but eventually, technology advances are going to convince you to upgrade sooner than you may think.
I think the only reason one might truly need 256 GB would be if one used the phone for lots of photos and videos. They do require much more storage , especially if you record 4K videos. If you have enough sight that you think you might be using your phone for photos and videos, then you might consider the 256 GB model.
I ended up going with the 256 GB 8 plus
After all that discussion, I ended up cancelling my order and going with the 256 GB plus, just because a family member wanted my older phone and paid me the cash. I still think that in general, unless you have very specific requirements, 64 GB is enough but I wasn't going to turn down the extra SD space. Either way, these devices have a very good mechanism for dealing with low space. I guess it is still up to the individual - funny, this discussion's gone cold fast but it's all just viewpoints and suggestions. For me, iOS is about not considering the arcaneness that is a computer. I got so fed up with OS X and wanted something different. iOS 9 and the split view features and such turned my head and now I personally don't wish to use a traditional computer. The fact that I can write these very comments in a bingo hall while my partner plays the game is something else.
