Hi everyone,
My first post - I'm the sighted partner of a visually impaired user and we're looking at getting an iPhone. Initially this will be for fairly (to me) basic needs - texting and e-mail, as the former she has never done and the latter is tricky for her on a PC due to technophobia! An iPhone 6 is out of the question (cost) but from the reading around I've done so far I believe an iPhone 5 should do all she needs and is fully able to handle VoiceOver? I see there's a couple of models out there - the 5c and 5s, is there a recommendation for which one I should go for. The only difference I could see was that the 5s has fingerprint recognition which I thought might make it easier for her to access if she doesn't need to enter a PIN code, but perhaps this is easy with VoiceOver - I haven't ploughed through all the tutorials yet so I'm not up to speed with how the accessibility works. I did search for this topic and couldn't find it but if it's posted elsewhere then please just point me in the right direction.

I would go with the 5S. It
I would go with the 5S. It has a faster processor than the 5C, and also a better camera which would be good for scanning and reading print papers. Also, the 5C will probably stop being able to get iOS updates sooner than the 5S.
Yeah.
I agree with the previous commenter. I have had an iPhone for over 3 years, and would recommend the 5S. If apple does what I believe they will, then next year, the 5C will probably stop being supported for iOS upgrades. Hopefully the 5S will keep being supported, as I don't plan on getting a new iPhone till next year anyway. Go with the faster phone
5S all the way
You may actually want to check with your provider as they may have a special going on for the iPhone 6. But if you simply can't afford that, the 5S is perfect for what you'll be using it for. In these cases you have to consider what's good for you, don't get something just cause all the cool people have it too. This is an investment and you'll want to get lots out of it. The 5S can run iOS 8 pretty well, it's got a pretty good camera for snapping pics of things for scanning if that's your thing, and it's pretty fast. It's a little faster than the 5 itself. I went from an iPhone 5 to a 6 but my room mate has a 5s and it's pretty sweet.
Consider another option, the five S or six will do the following
Hello. First welcome to the site. It's very cool you're trying tohelp you and your partner out. The fiveC is plastic, whereas the 5S and six is metal and glass, not quite sure the makeup of it. Anyway that's not why I'm writing this. Voice over has a female voice, Samantha, most of us use, though the five S an support Alex. He's a male voice and though a larger file size then what's on the phone, his speech is probably very easy to understand, the voice right now on IOS 8 does in my view a few letters I don't quite always understand what she says. If your partner does take photos, they are right, the camera is better, I know it's strange but i who can't see photos have almost three hundred photos, oks ome of them selfies. ;) Btw if you choose the five S you want a larger phone if you can afford it, only because Alex voice is nearly a gig in size. I don't know how much you know about technology but that is a pretty large file. Hope I helped a little, please keep us posted and if your partner needs anything hoep they come here. Have a good day.
64Bit makes the difference
Hi NickR
Welcome to the forum
I'm agree with most of the things mention above should you go for faster processor
Not only makes the difference the fingerprint bilt in the 5S if not include more features
if you consider buy an faster processor go for the 6 but it's out of your cost even considering bigger screen to use for a girl specially when has small hands.
the iPhone 5S is the best option for you
because if you compare side by side the 5S beat to the 5C
material quality Aluminun body vs plastic
better camera bilt in the 5S
bilt fingerprint scanner to jump the posscode luck and apple ID when purchass items from app Store
but here the feature who makes the big difference
the 64Bit bilt on the 5S makes faster device specially will see running iOS 8 and voiceOver remember all kind of screen reading takes a beat time to response while faster processor is runs faster less delay
iOS is designed to faster processors
between the 2 choices 5C and 5S should you go for the 5S
RE: iPhone 5s or 5c as first iPhone
Capacity makes a difference. In addition to the strong recommendations for the iPhone 5S, I also recommend purchasing the 64GB model as the more storage space your partner has the better. For example, I download audio described movies mp3 files from www.blindmicemegamall.com. More memory means more movie-watching pleasure. Now there is one thing to consider, with regard to memory, the new iPhone 6 models have 128 GB of space instead of the 64 GB on the iPhone 5S model. So if you can get the 6 with the 128 GB of memory, even that much better.
Definitely Get an iPhone 5S
Hello Nick,
First, welcome to AppleVis!
If you are able, I strongly recommend getting the iPhone 5S over the iPhone 5C. The technology inside the 5S (mainly, the processor) is one year newer; in everyday use, what this translates to is quicker responsiveness/less latency from VoiceOver. Also, as the processor in the iPhone 5S is one generation newer, this also means that the iPhone 5S will *likely* be supported one major operating system update longer than the iPhone 5C--if the past is any indicator.
Thanks for the feedback
Thanks everyone for the speedy feedback - an overwhelming vote of support for the 5s (but I will check out the prices of a 6 to see if they're that much more). I hadn't considered the memory size - it's very unlikely that she'll be using it to watch movies etc (we can use my iPad for that, but thanks for that link to audio-described movies) or taking photos, so I just need sufficient capacity to handle a few useful apps, and i'm just starting now to have a look to see what's about (the kfnb reader will be top of my list I think).
