Hi All!

I was referred to this amazing site by one of your members Justin (drummer0608)

I myself am not blind, but I have invented a product that blind iOS users like Justin are getting really excited about. He urged that I share here.

My name is Anthony Mattana. For the last 5 years I've worked as a professional sound designer and composer in NYC. Now I am the founder and creator of Hooke Audio and have always been fascinated by binaural audio. For those that don't know, binaural audio is recorded audio captured identically to the way the human ear experiences sound. The result is a two channel recording that makes any listener with a pair of headphones feel like they are there. How cool is that?!

There haven't been any products out there that let a user record binaural audio to their iphones, so I decided to invent one! I combined binaural recording technology into a pair of wireless headphones. It's called the Hooke Verse. Hooke Audio is my company. Hooke is both a playback and capturing device, capable of playing music AND recording 3D Audio. Check out my site here: www.hookeaudio.com and our youtube channel here to hear our 3d recordings captured with Hooke: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBRvQgL46ga9WmgFyTFxNCg

I hope to bring binaural recording to all by making storytelling as easy as unlocking your iOS device!

Would love to hear what you guys think of my product and would be happy to answer any questions you might have! Right now we are manufacturing the headphones. You can pre order via our website. They are set to ship late this summer.

Thank you!
Anthony

Hi.
I've read about this awesome product with huge interest, and I know so many people who will be as much excited as everyone who have replied in this topic so far.
I look very much forward to hear more about those. Maybe I get enough money to preorder before they are released. But if not, then I'll buy them later for sure.

So even though this is my first comment, this device has been haunting my dreams for a while, and in a good way. In fact, when asked what i wanted for Christmas, this device is what came to mind immediately. I mean, it sprang up from the ground, flew into the air, and began skywriting, "Me! Me! Me!" So it's pretty much agreed that that's gonna happen, which is like the 1 reason I'm not asking to be added as... ANOTHER beta tester. I would, however, love to know if this beautiful, fantastic, glorious, amazing, futuristic, awesome, crazy piece of technology is going to be released before the end of February 2017. I ask this because I am going to San Francisco to speak on a panel about video game accesibility for the blind, and I would LOVE to be able to bring this along. San Francisco is such a vibrant, lively place, it needs me to record it in 3D audio. That's right, nobody else. Just me. Haha. Seriously though, thanks, Anthony, for making something i've dreamd about since i heard Mickey Mouse in 3D audio at the Epcot Center in Orlando. Something I've desired since I heard Stephen King's The Mist produced entirely in 3D audio. Thank you. I will now insinuate myself as your best friend ever. Er, OK, maybe not, but if I try, just go with it... Or something.

Any updates from the developer? I thought these things were supposed to ship out in November or so, but I can't remember what I read from his twitter. I believe the last time he wrote here, the thing was going under QA. Did the android folks get theirs How about those on kick starter? I know the beta team has ben hard at work, thanks. But I eagerly await mine as part of the real public.

We just received our Apple MFi certification! We'll be launching beginning of next year! Thank you all for the continued support and patience!!

By StarNoble on Friday, December 23, 2016 - 00:40

For the longest time, I've been wanting this! However, until now, when I attempted to place the order it wouldn't go through for some reason. So I'm glad to have it ordered now, and I will be hoping and preying for the success of the launch. Thanks so much, Hooke Audio, for making such an awesome product!

Sheesh! That long to receive an apple what's its? Just out of curiousity what's left in the process, what's left to do now that apple gave you permission to do this? I'm not that bright when it comes to this kind of paper work stuff, but again I'm just curious.

@AnthonyM I'm excited on the app. when will it be Live? I would like to test the accessibility and give you the feedback!

By jcdjmac (not verified) on Friday, December 23, 2016 - 00:40

Hello, according to an email I received today from @AnthonyM the email states that the app along with the earphones will be launched April 2017. However, if things change, he will let us know. but for now, expect the app and device to be shipping this April!

By jcdjmac (not verified) on Friday, December 23, 2016 - 00:40

Hi @AnthonyM First of all, change of plands: I will be purchasing the new apple airpods, and therefore , I have no interest in the earphones at this time. However, I'm interested in the app, though. Will their be an accessibility demo?

By KE7ZUM on Friday, December 23, 2016 - 00:40

I've heard from the beta testers s they have used the mics that the app seems accessible. I hpoe to see a review by someone on applevis as devd are not aloud to post their own apps on hee.

Take care.

i will be followed also this, good luck

By Mitchell on Thursday, February 23, 2017 - 00:40

When is the specific release date for these? I can't wait, and I'm curious to when they will be released.

By KE7ZUM on Thursday, February 23, 2017 - 00:40

Well, all, I heard from their facebook page via another person that the units will be shipping in a few months. I can't wait to get mine, I really can't. This is going to be good.

By jcdjmac (not verified) on Thursday, February 23, 2017 - 00:40

@ke7zum you are correct. I was the one who told you that shipping starts in a few munths. I'm following their facebook page, and they've been posting videos showing off the earphones. Hopefully @AnthonyM will bring us updates soon.

By AnthonyM on Thursday, February 23, 2017 - 00:40

Hey Guys! I fly to China March 3rd to oversee final assembly and testing. IF (big if) everything goes smoothly, we'll be shipping by end of March. Thank you for your continued support and patience!!

By Remy on Thursday, February 23, 2017 - 00:40

Hello Anthony. I am a visually impaired sound designer specializing in writing, producing and acting in audio theatre in the vain of a company known as GraphicAudio. I have always been fascinated by the potential of binaural audio in such a medium. You rarely hear it, and yet it adds such a fantastic level of immersion. Now with so many people consuming audio on headphones, it makes even more sense. I do have a couple of questions though. What makes your headphones stand out from similar binaural recording headphones out there? Also, is a proprietary app required for recording? If I wanted to use, say, garage band or any other high quality audio recording app, could it be? Could I also use its Bluetooth functionality with my PC for recording? Either way, I really hope to hear more binaural recordings one day.

Hey Remy_C

To answer your questions. Hooke Verse is different because it is the first binaural microphone to be embedded into a pair of bluetooth headphones. When you pair Hooke Verse to your phone you can use it like a regular pair of bluetooth headphones (listen to music, take calls, etc.) BUT when you go to capture a video or audio recording (you do have to use the Hooke App currently), instead of using the built in microphone, the Hooke Verse streams lossless, latency free 16bit 44.1kHz binarual audio over bluetooth straight to your phone! The Hooke Verse also comes with a recording cable that you can plug in and turn the Verse into a wired microphone. With this wire you can record to anything you want, even if it doesnt have bluetooth. Hopefully that cleared up your questions. Let me know if you need anything else.

Wanted to share this with you all! http://bit.ly/2lrIOXo Justin is blind and originally turned me onto AppleVis. He's been helping us develop the Hooke Verse over the last two years and I really wanted to share his story. I think you'll all love it! And if you can, please help by sharing to your networks.

By jcdjmac (not verified) on Thursday, February 23, 2017 - 00:40

@AnthonyM amazing story! I cannot wait to try the app out with VoiceOver! will the app launch the same time as the hedphones? because you know how apple is, it takes time before apple approves an app to the appstore. and what will the app name be? same as android? As a podcaster and frequent audio guy, I always love to capture audio, and with the introduction of the new hedphones, podcasting and the way we all capture audio will change forever! also, my sisters wedding is coming up, so if I do decide to purchase the Hooke Verse from you guys, the first thing I will capture is my sisters wedding. My cousin is also getting merryed next week, but sadly I will not capture the wedding as I do not have the hedphones as of yet. also, is their a possibility that we could hear an audio demo of Justin using the Hooke Mobile app being used with VoiceOver?

Hi @AnthonyM,

Will those of us who pre-ordered our Hooke Verse a long time ago receive ours first when they ship?

Thanks,

Darrell

I can tell you that there are no better products out there than the Andrea Binaural earbuds and headphones. I am a musician and also I do a lot of recording various things, and the sound difference between only having one microphone and having two plus being able to capture sound from more than one direction is amazing. I have also found that the detail these can capture is far better than anything else out there. For example, I recorded a train while sitting at Starbucks, and unlike anything else I have used to record in the past, I could even hear the wheeles of train as they went over a switch in the recording.

I was looking into ways of producing high-quality audio with an iPhone and just remembered having come across this post some time ago. These sound really exciting and I'm looking forward to the launch! Any further news about when they'll be shipped? Also just wanted to let you know that clicking the pre-order button on your website gives me a 404 error. Hoping to get my hands on these soon!

By jcdjmac (not verified) on Thursday, March 23, 2017 - 00:40

@ke7zum yes, their are done. however, Hooke Audio has been posting stuff on their Facebook page. so we shall see what's next.

By KE7ZUM on Thursday, March 23, 2017 - 00:40

I actually should be following them on facebook, oops? For those of us interested what do we look for on facebook to follow them?

By Falco on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

Hello,

I placed an order for the hooke 2 years ago. On the kickstarter and Facebook page I see they will start shipping the kickstarter-orders. I am not a kickstarter backer and it is not possible for me to read the campagne updates..... Maybe they can give us more information about the progress on this topic?.... Since the Facebook photos are not helpfull for a blind person :D

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

I follow them on twitter, I think they are very very close to shipping. I'm very excited. I hope I have way better experiences with them then I did wiht a snow lozard care I preordered and got my phone stuck in said case, I was not happy and had to have a refund.

By Toonhead on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

This is why i'm holding off on purchasing one of these. I can't spend a significant amount of money for something that I will receive 2 years from now. I just don't have the necessary cash flow to justify it. so I hope everyone who receives it enjoys them, they sound absolutely amazing but I have to wait until I hear some real world reports and know the thing is actually available. Not almost, not maybe, but actually available to purchase.

By Joseph on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

Agreed with the last poster. If I would've preordered these I'd be hella pissed if I didn't get them by now, but that's just me.

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

Yeah I can't wait for mine. I've heard the finished models through twitter and they sound just wonderful. Check their twitter if you want ot hear what they sound like.

By Joseph on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

I've heard what they sound like a few times before. not at all bad.

By Amir on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

Wondering if Anthony, Hooke Audio's founder, still monitors this topic.
I'm currently using a Sony PCM-D100, and would like to order the Hooke Verse as it offers a much more portable/less noticeable solution, but am in two minds about its preamps. Are they quiet enough? How easily do the mics clip? Moreover, is the Bluetooth standard really capable of capturing and transfering all nuances of audio similar to the way a wired solution does?
I've watched almost all Hooke Audio's videos on Youtube. While they sound quite awesome, I've noticed some clipping in a couple of them -- especially in concerts.
I'm familiar with the pros and cons of pro audio recorders and own a couple of high-end Sony/Olympus/Sound Devices recorders/mixers, but the Hooke Verse, with its recording-over-Bluetooth solution in particular and its $240 price point, sounds like a mystery to me.
BTW, you may also want to take a look at Hooke Verse's manual (or a version of it which has been delivered to the FCC): https://fccid.io/document.php?id=3291392
It sounds like a great device on paper, and I'd very much like to know the SPL (Sound Pressure Level) of the microphones -- something which is not mentioned in the manual.

By Amir on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

Something I forgot to ask in my previous comment: does the Hooke Verse iOS app allow users to engage a low-cut filter or a limiter when needed? The former is a must for loud concerts, loud outdoor sounds, handling wind noise (along with the headset's windscreen), etc.

Hello,

Are there any new or upgrades to the hardware? When this was first offered, it was ground breaking. but that was two years ago. It’s like me paying for an iPhone 7 and taking delivery of it two years later.

I am not tryig to be rude or insulting, but I hope you folks that prepaid get an updated or upgraded version of the unit.

By KE7ZUM on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

Oh we will be getting an upgraded version. Read his description from a few months ago. The spl of the mics I'd say by listening is quite high. It was able to capture a concert without braking a sweat. The noise flore to me sounds liek about -60 almost as good as my studio mics.

The manual posted to the FCC website seems to be based on the updated Hooke Verse which, among other things, offers wired recording. However, I'm wondering if the Bluetooth-based recording will have a cut filter/base roll-off option or a limiter although the former seems much more important to me given the outdoor/concert-oriented nature of the headset.

By Portia on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

Hey all,

I'm very excited for this. I can't wait till I can get mine.

By jcdjmac (not verified) on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

Hi,
Not yet for me because I first need to read some consumer reviews from both the sided/blind community before I make a purchase. I just hope the app is accessible as well, as some bata testers already tested the app on iOS with voiceover active. Justin, who works with the accessibility team at Hooke, make sure that the app is fully accessible with VO. Let's see. again, I'm not going to purchase mine yet, as I'd first need to read reviews, as well as hear an audio podcast demoing the unit and it's companion app.

By Joseph on Sunday, April 23, 2017 - 00:40

I won't get one yet either. I also need to read reviews and save up the cash for this.

By StarNoble on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 - 00:40

For all of you who have been waiting for it, it has finally happened. The Hooke Audio app for iOS is officially out and it is available in the app store. And for everyone who preordered their Hooke Verse, it is shipping as well. Just thought you all would like to know.

So I am currently on the site and about to purchase this product.
I feel there's no time like the present as I'm off to the U.S very shortly; going back and forward for the comi9ng year and I'm very much into recording my surroundings for other people to enjoy and for my own blogging experience, so these will be perfect. :)

By rdfreak on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 - 00:40

Hi again Anthony,
Just about to purchase, but but if you could answer the following questions please before I do:

1. Are they compatible with the iPhone 7? As in the cable being used?
2. Is one required to record directly to the app? If so, can this easily be shared with other apps?

Thank you. :)

By jessiepp on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 - 00:40

also happened to look in the google play store so if you have a device also with the other o s it is out there as well.

By Lysette Chaproniere on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 - 00:40

I've just tried to order these and I'm having problems with the website. I put in all my details and it's saying "invalid entry" on my card number and expiry date, even though I know these are correct, and I put the expiry date in MM/YY format like the site asks. The link to make the payment at the end did nothing, not even tell me what was wrong with my details. TBH that form was not very easy to navigate and I've tried it both on my iPhone and my windows laptop using NVDA. I also just downloaded the app and it's almost entirely unresponsive with Voiceover. Flicking left/right does absolutely nothing; there's just a recording volume control which is dimmed anyway. Double-tapping with two fingers brings up a control where I can choose either list or tile layout, but it doesn't make any difference which one I choose. Is that what's supposed to happen when you open the app without having a Hooke Verse already connected?

By AnthonyM on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 - 00:40

In reply to by Lysette Chaproniere

Hey LC3249, sorry to hear you're having trouble ordering. We've had hundreds of blind users successfully order in the past, so I'm wondering if it related to the browser you are using? If you could, please email us at info@hookeaudio.com with your issue and I will have our head of accessibility navigate the purchase process with you.

In regards to the app, the app is designed to work WITH the Hooke Verse to capture wireless binaural 3daudio. Without a Verse connected, the app works just like a camera app. So truly, there's not much use to it without a Hooke Verse. If you click the settings button in the app, you'll be able to read some helpful tips on how to use the Hooke Verse once your order arrives. Thanks!

Hey rdfreak, answers to your questions below.
1. Are they compatible with the iPhone 7? As in the cable being used?
Hooke Verse is compatible with iPhone 7. You cant use the Hooke recording cable with iPhone 7 since the iPhone 7 doesn't have a headphone jack. You also cant use the Hooke recording cable on anything under the iPhone 7, since the iPhones headphone jack is a mono input, so you'll need to record wirelessly.
2. Is one required to record directly to the app? If so, can this easily be shared with other apps?
Yes, we have created a custom recording codec that enables us to stream multiple channels of high quality audio over bluetooth to a phone. This has never been done before and something that Android and iOS are not set up natively to work with. So we have to use our own app to complete this handshake. That being said, unless an app chooses to incorporate our codec into their code, the Hooke Verse will not work with it. But you can buy an iPhone/Android attachment that allows you to plug in a stereo source (http://www.bluemic.com/products/mikey-digital/). then use the recording cable and plug into it. THEN any app you use will work with Hooke Verse since the blue mikey overrides the built in mic on your phone.

By Mitchell on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 - 00:40

Hi.
I have wanted to get the Hooke verse for a while now, but haven't had the money. I was wondering if someone ordered now, when would it be received?
Thanks.

By AnthonyM on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 - 00:40

In reply to by Mitchell

US orders normally take 5-10 days to receive. For outside of USA, it depends on your countries shipping agent and import procedures.

By Mitchell on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 - 00:40

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm curious if there is a way within the app to have a gesture that, while playing the Hooke file, if you could change your point of view in the recording manually. Thanks again.
