Buy a new computer

Hello,

I'm going to buy a new computer soon. At the moment, I have a macbook pro touchbarr, and I would like a desktop computer.

I would like to buy an iMac, but I'm afraid that in the coming years VoiceOver will be abandoned on the mac. And I have the impression that Jaws can better help when applications are not accessible, for example using OCR ... But I can't tell myself that I will no longer have synchronization with messages, calls, and airdrop.

What do you think?

Thank you.

PS: I am French, sorry for my English which is a little bad.

Hi,
As someone who has used MacOS exclusively for a decade, I can safely say that they won't abandon accessibility on the mac. Sure, it's not perfect... but, it works. If you want to go ahead and get an Imac, go ahead and get it. You can do anything you can do with windows, you'll just have to find work arounds. OCR is done with either Prizmo for mac or ABBY finereader OCR pro. It's not free, but it works 99%. .

Hi!

Thank you for your answer!

I'm afraid that with the new programming languages that will arrive in the future apple leaves VoiceOver, especially when we see how the catalyst applications behave ...

Don't worry about your English. It's good.

Switching from Voiceover for Mac to JAWS for Windows is a big leap. If you're not familiar with how it works then it will be a rather daunting process. You have to adjust to a completely new set of keystrokes as well as an entirely different control philosophy.

What kinds of apps do you regularly use? Some use cases are easier to adapt than others. If you rely on MS Office and/or do a lot of web browsing then it may be worth looking into switching. If you use apps like iMovie, Final Cut, or Logic, then you're stuck on Mac. If you don't like Mac OS but want to stay within the ecosystem then maybe consider an iPad. All the benefits of iOS with enough room for a keyboard.

If you want to give Windows a try before sinking money in then you should try using Bootcamp. A trial version of JAWS is available that runs for 45 minutes at a time before requiring a restart. NVDA is a free alternative with a lot of command overlap to JAWS that is also available.

I use Logic pro a lot :)

But also Pages, Nulber and Keynote. Currently I have a PC with Jaws for my studies, and I don't like windows. But I think it may be more accessible, I don't know why :)

hello,

Since you use Logic a lot, your forst into a mac, unless you want to invest in a DAW on the windows side. I have Sonar and Caketalking if you want to get into that. email me if you want that DAW. as far as an iMac, they're great machines, having had one for a bit myself. keep in mind though, the front is the screen and the back is where all ports are. VMWare fusion is an option, of you need macos and windows similtaniously. it requires lots of RAM though, as it is sharing resources with macos for windows. also windows 10 is the only version with a talking install. also Bootcamp partitions your SSD and is not accessible with shairing on the mac side within windows, as VMWare fusion is. whatever you decide, I hope you do reserch and come to a disition that is right for you. any more questions, sound off in the comments. you can also email me, regarding this matter or about my Sonar and Caketalking licenses at at x2016pjm@stfx.ca.
regards,
Daniel

I have a regular desk PC with Windows and jaws 10. What I like about it is that if I need help with windows, I can call microsoft and get help ASAP and jaws people are helpful. It is all about what you like and how easy it is. Windows is easy and you do not need to learn any special way to use it. I do like my iPhone and it is great but for PC, it is windows. take care.

I think I'm going to take an iMac ... But do you think I have to take a very powerful machine? Does VoiceOver use more resources? Currently I have a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 dual core macbook pro and VoiceOver is slow in some cases ...
Also, what do you think of fusion drive?

Hi,
As I say in the subject, I would avoid fusion drive. I think that now a complete SSD is mandatory in every computer.
About the machine… You say that you use logic a lot. A good processor (I5 or I7) and minimum 16 gb ram could be a good investment. It will guarantee you a solid and durable machine.
Personally, I would wait 2 or 3 days before buying an I Mac. We’re seeing updates in apple products and I Mac is a possible candidate.
Greetings

Hi !

Thank you! Yes, I will wait for this summer. I will not buy the iMac today, I hope that new models will be released soon to have an updated machine.
