VoiceOver Language Detection macOS vs iOS

Is it possible to have Voiceover read a piece of content in a different language? I am able to get it to work for JAWS and NVDA, but not for Voiceover (VO).

Here is a quick Codepen for testing... The language of the page is English, and the language of the part is French.

However, VO on MacOS isn’t automatically switching languages to read the content aloud with the proper pronunciation on MacOS. Testers have told me that it does work correctly on iOS however.

In addition, there are no ARIA attributes that would force VO to change this behavior in MacOS.

For a sample of a screen correctly identifying a language and reading with correct pronunciation, see my blog post on the topic…

This impacts conformance with WCAG 2.0 SC 3.1.2 language of parts.

Thanks,
Damian
